The system I use is 4(y+5)=x-1 and 3(y+5)=x+6 where x is the son's age now. That produces the result everyone but you agrees upon.

You did catch me in an error though. The correct system is y+5=4(x-1) and y+5=3(x+6) which is reduced to Synk's formula in a single step. In this system, X is ... 22. Synk then subtracts 5 years for no good reason to get 17.

The original Japanese "all your base" was, I think, written in a script or dialect that conveys a "victorious and proudful manner". English doesn't have anything to compensate for that. So technically, that Engrish is more accurate that your profusely convoluted translation.

Plus, it's riddled with crappy things, like places you have to be a frog or mini to get past. Also, the DS version manages to break the mold of "dur new games are easier" by making enemies stronger - compensation for having less enemies on screen - which also applies to bosses. So whoop dee doo on making most bossfights into a luck based mission.

That kind of power actually is pretty consistent with how ridiculously tough enemies are in the NES version, so I can't help but feel maybe Square decided to take it easy on players if the enemy count is reduced.
