So... who cares?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c9/Steve_Jobs_with_the_Apple_iPad_no_logo.jpg

Looks like a huge iPhone that isn't a phone.... but i guess it makes sense overall.

Anywhere i look these days it seems to be an Apple fever. It's like everyone who matters has an iPhone and everyone who is somebody should get an iPad.

So... iPhone and iPad... what you guys really think of them?

First opinion: interesting concept.
Second opinion: fuckit. iPhone OS on that? Fuck that. Beyond that, my iPod screen is scratched enough, and it's a fraction of the size. Durability will likely be craaaaap.

I think it should have a small phone attached to the side of it.

Really, I'm just hoping this is a sign of the Rise of the Datapad.

Pretty much yeah. Just give it a while and a million copycats will flock to it, some better some worse.

First impressions: Why should I have either such a ridiculously large iPhone or such a ridiculously small tablet?

Second impression: Why should I pay a king's ransom for an iPhone that doesn't make calls or a tablet without a robust OS in the first place?

From the darkest depths of the internet, I bring you 8 Reasons Why The iPad sucks. (http://gizmodo.com/5458382/8-things-that-suck-about-the-ipad)

Gizmodo is the darkest depths of the internet?!

Also, yes, it seems pretty bad... but must i remind you about the first iPhone and how it got similar backlash?

Well, yeah.

everyone who is somebody should get an iPad.That is far from the consensus.

While I don't think this will be a flop, I think it will be a far cry from Apple's past successes. Keep it just successful enough for future changes and innovations until it reaches it's own iPod to iPhone leap.

Pretty much, it's killed by the fact that it is not a computer, that it is just an oversized iPod Touch (with optional 3GS service). It can't multi-task, it's applications are limited to what Apple allows into it's AppStore... It's at some uncomfortable spot between a netbook and a Kindle at a time when the market really doesn't need something like that.Second impression: Why should I pay a king's ransom for an iPhone that doesn't make calls or a tablet without a robust OS in the first place?Honestly, the price point isn't that bad. I was honestly expecting that the cheapest model would be at least $300 more expensive. The price point isn't that far off of the iPhone's when it came out.

The iPad is too far ahead of it's applicable time, and it offers few advantages over just picking up a iPod Touch at this point. This needed some more time in the labs, really. I'm interested in seeing where the line is going, but for right now it just doesn't do the trick. Also, yes, it seems pretty bad... but must i remind you about the first iPhone and how it got similar backlash?I honestly don't recall this. Have any sources?

Do you guys know those computers they have in Chapters? It's set up like a Mac, with a Mac keyboard and monitor, but the monitor is basically a touch screen, and it works really well.

I don't know why apple's not investing into that, instead putting their focus on their monolith:

I think it looks neat, but not thrilled about no multitasking and shitty phone OS.

I will await future innovations with interest.

I think most people will buy it because its "the next big thing" though its weak points will make anyone that does actual research before their purchase will avoid. Sadly the casual consumer, the one who these drawbacks will hurt the most, will be the most likely ones to buy it

Remember when it was big news when someone found out how to hack their iPhone so that you could apply to different phone carriers? How long until people are modding their Pads?

the sad thing is that by this point the majority of the apple consumer base has been conditioned to the point that they'll drop any amount of money on anything Steve Jobs puts up for sale, utterly convinced of how superior it must be compared to any equivalent technology.

They see future potential, but otherwise just a rather minor iteration in the product line.

Also; menstruation joke.

There, now nobody has to do it.

Bonus round; "I thought my iPad was where I took my iChicks!" -(Willis)

Ahahaha what? A touchscreen laptop/iPhone hybrid?
Right off the top of my head:
A backpack with an iMac integrated into it which bluetooths the visual to your screen which now doesn't need to be as thick or heavy.

I'd buy that. Especially if it didn't have to be mac.

Day one? (http://gizmodo.com/5461810/windows-7-running-on-the-apple-ipad-via-citrix) Ugh, I feel really stupid having to type iPad in. Same with any of the other i devices, it's insulting to my intelligence to have that little unnecessary i in front. I thought iPod was stupid, but this has it beat.

I think the Monolith idea from a few posts ago has a pretty good ring to it. Let's persuade apple to enlarge the thing by a factor of 5000 and then build a new stonehenge with it. And in several years time people will look at it and go "How could they have done it?" and "What was it even FOR?" and "This is a sign of extraterrestrial life!" or whatever.

Come to think of it, just scrap that, and get apple to release the iRock. It's retro.

They can totally rerelease the iPod Touch as the iPad nano now and more people will buy it up!
