Let's try this one more time. :D

The last two threads I made about my radio show both collapsed on account of me...well....not getting a radio show. I wanted to wait until Nikose and I completed the website for it, but screw it. Everything's in place right now, so why wait?

I have a weekly time slot of 6-8pm EST on Saturday, but some Wednesdays I sit in for another DJ. Tonight being one of those nights. On the offchance anyone is actually interested in listening in, I'll be on from 10-midnight playing rock/some country. www.wdvrfm.org The station also takes requests.

Mind posting a grooveshark playlist of the music content after? If you make a thread with that in it I'll put it in my sig.

Bob's show is on-
PST: 3PM-5PM
Central: 4PM-7PM
EST: 6PM-8PM

Bob The Mercenary
02-03-2010, 09:27 PM
Mind if I just write them all down? Never used Grooveshark before. ^^;

Also, I could put you guys on the air if you want. You'll be broadcast throughout the hinterlands of central and north Jersey. :) But, one swear word and I'm gone.

Sure, I'd be willing to do the work for you GS side if you wanted =]

GIVING NPF AIRTIME? Jesus, what would be the best thing to say?
This is like finding a genie lamp and a big blue guy pops out of it named Bob...

WORLD HUNGER, I WISH TO END WORLD HUNGER.

.....

Or, yaknow, like anything from TED.com would be cool to /radio too.

I'm on right now and haven't gotten a single phone call. The guy before me had like twenty. :( Well, aside from my dad requesting Skynyrd.

Guy before you listener: "DAMNIT THIS MUSIC IS NO GOOD, ILL CALL THEM TO GET SOMETHING BETTER!"

Bob The Mercenary
02-03-2010, 11:23 PM
Heh, I think the problem is the country/rock thing. It's going to have to be one or the other. Preferably rock. I'm just using these first few shows to loosen them up to me.

And I'm off this Saturday anyway. They're pre-empting me with a live event.

[Edit] Or........we could make this a live NPF discussion forum! Kick off my talk radio career with a bang!

>_>

Why did everyone run away?

You know, you could replicate that by just paying two guys to alternately shout "Socialism!" "Titties!" "Socialism!" "Titties!" with a third guy reading the script to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail backwards, with appropriate sound effects.

Bob The Mercenary

The station really doesn't have a true talk show though. I think we could capitalize on that and draw in listeners if we could get a couple people together who could hold themselves together enough not to cuss or use innuendo.

I mean it's worth a shot. But, without a delay of any kind, I would be limited to killing the phone call and acting like "oh, what was that?"

Alternatively, we just go rock show and screw the rest of it. Though I think we have a real opportunity for something here.

[Edit] I'll have the song list up for you tomorrow, Lev.

I think we could capitalize on that and draw in listeners if we could get a couple people together who could hold themselves together enough not to cuss or use innuendo.

But that's, like, 70% of listeners... I understand you're pandering to two specific groups that aren't correlating but innuendo can just be an innocent thing while curse words could keep being banned.

Bob The Mercenary
02-04-2010, 08:53 AM
On a normal station, yeah. But the owners of this place want to keep it absolutely sterile. They're motto is that anyone from age 3 to 103 should be able to listen to us without incident. And they specifically mentioned innuendo to me during my interview. I could try to argue them into getting with the times and granting just a little more leniency to a show's content, but I don't want to push my luck, being the new guy and all.

Though I have been continually pushing for a 5-second delay, as I've heard they aren't too difficult to implement.

Country huh, the closest I've come to that in the last 7 years is probably this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aS0rX4rMx9E

But seriously, TED.com, "Ideas worth sharing."
They are just begging to be shared!

I can totally hold up half of that bargain. Can do it without swearing too- probably.

Hmm, I could drive a few hours east and listen to the radio station in my car so you get higher ratings. I need you to send me gas money, though. A hundred dollars should suffice.

How do they measure ratings, anyway?

Bob The Mercenary
02-04-2010, 04:16 PM
Or you could just stream it. :)

Magus
02-04-2010, 04:19 PM
Hey, I like NPR and all but I don't listen to the music, I listen to the talk shows. I can't stand NPR's music. This station looks like a similar format, where it tries to be eclectic and have all kinds of different music and talk and so forth. You should get a talk show instead, though I can't say what you should talk about. Are video games cultural yet? The only one ever mentioned on NPR was Flower, which was lame.

But yeah I can stream you, that'll work. You should focus more on rock, though, there are more than enough country stations, let me tell you.

Bob The Mercenary
02-04-2010, 04:32 PM
Sounds good. And as of right now there are no real talk shows on the station, aside from some financial talk. Of course without a delayed broadcast any call ins would have to be screened and planned beforehand.

I'd be thrilled if you guys would want to help me out with something like that. Not sure if video games would fly with our demographic though.

Politics on the other hand... We broadcast to the Republican heartland. You guys would have a field day.

Magus
02-04-2010, 04:52 PM
I think you'll probably need to get other people involved if you want to do more than just DJ music, because the kinds of shows on NPR and so forth involve like, prerecorded essays on particular topics and stuff like that. I probably misnamed them when I called them talk shows, I'm not sure what they're called. A talk show might be easier to do, if you have callers, but if you don't even have a co-host I don't think it would work.

Anyway, you're just one guy, that's probably why the station mainly plays music, because that's all one guy at a time can realistically do, you see. Maybe you could play some kind of interesting genre of music that no one else is playing on the station, or something.

Also, about demographics, as far as public radio goes, the demographic changes with the show, usually. You tune in to the shows you like, unlike with say an all-rock station or an all-country station, which is specifically catering to a group of people all the time, a public station caters to a specific group for a few hours and then switches to another group.

Bob The Mercenary
02-04-2010, 05:14 PM
What about rock music with some light geek talk in between? I could easily recruit a friend or two for cohosting or screening.

Magus
02-04-2010, 05:19 PM
Sounds like it might work.

EDIT: Also, Bob, don't tell me you're taking over Heartland Hayride's Saturday spot! Are they moving that to another time period or something?

Bob The Mercenary
02-06-2010, 01:56 PM
The Heartland Hayride was canceled today because of snow, so it's likely they'll have me on tonight instead. Be sure to tune in from 6-8pm! I'll try to start some semblance of talk tonight in between requests. This'll probably be my last country/rock themed show, I'd like to move over to all rock if that'll get me a more steady following.

Also, Bob, don't tell me you're taking over Heartland Hayride's Saturday spot! Are they moving that to another time period or something?

The Hayride has been struggling over the past year because every venue they hold it at ends up shutting down and they have to keep searching for new places to hold it. It went from a church, to a school auditorium, to another church, and is as of right now at another church. It used to be every week, but now they've cut the schedule to every other week, which is where I come in.

I didn't know you were such a fan of local country/folk. :D

Bob The Mercenary
02-07-2010, 12:25 PM
My next show may or may not be either Wednesday or Saturday night. But, that's not the important part.

I need cohosts, and none of my friends have time to take the hour drive with me.

I would be able to stream you over the air with Skype, or we also have a landline but that could be pricey as it's not a toll free number. I just need people I could banter with about anything from video games or pop culture, anything we feel like talking about.

Nikose is on schedule for the first show, after that I guess we could go in order of interest. I know some people here are or have been in the military. Those interviews are generally popular around these parts of NJ. We wouldn't have to use your real names if you didn't want. And this forum would never be mentioned.

Just an idea I had. I still haven't really decided on a format. Country seems to draw the most phone calls. I tried mixing in The Who and received complaints from farmers. :P He told me "there's too many damn rock stations around here" so I guess country is what we'll sway towards. Mixing country and geek talk should prove interesting to say the least.

Magus
02-08-2010, 07:07 PM
Talk about Half-Life 2 Episode 3 and hopefully everyone who's not in the know will just think you're talking about a farm Combine. Although they may wonder why said farm Combine is enslaving the human race.

Well there went any interest I had. Another reason to dislike NJ.

hurrrr

Be careful with the talk-show-whatevers aspect, though. I mean, if they want country music enough to complain when you try other formats, even classic rock, they might not like the notion of the host chattin' it up with a bunch of his friends/psuedo-friends/virtual gang members/bowling teammates/bot programs/MIT physicists who somehow become action heroes/Pokemon trainers/folks from the Intertronmachinetube.

Bob The Mercenary
02-08-2010, 09:39 PM
There are plenty of talk-"like" shows on that get no complaints. And they talk about the most random stuff. There's also a guy who talks just computer security, and another who talks just mortgages -_- .

It's really left up to me what we want to play. One of the other DJs there actually told me I'm doing alright on the complaint front. He gets calls every so often making fun of him for being gay. If the only people I'm offending by playing rock is a small group of farmers, I think it would be better to take it in stride and continue playing what I know best. Which would be rock.

I'm so confused, though I really really want some sort of a talk aspect.

Hanuman
02-08-2010, 10:44 PM
Then talk about something that impacts everyone, that's meaningful, and in words farmers without computers can understand.

Useful information without being too intellectual, some people just want to unwind.

Remember Bob, it's not what you play, its what audience you want to build; build the audience THEN appeal to them, don't build an audience you dislike just to find out you can't really go anywhere with it. Ease.

What audience do you want? Well, first look what is available for listeners already, and what ratio of radio users listen to what, get a really good picture of that.

Bob The Mercenary
02-13-2010, 05:53 PM
Going live at 6, which is in about 15 minutes.

I managed to jack in to the station's local internet access so I can actually take requests. I'm doing all country tonight since my friends dropped a crap load of it on me. We'll see how that goes. Can't really have much of a talk show without someone to talk to.

And Lev, the show with the most listeners is the one on immediately after me. Though it's not so much what they play as it is how long they've been on. They've had decades to build a following.

I am totally listening right now, but it's been songs I don't know so far. I am awaiting hearing you so I can go "hurr I know that guy. Kind of."

E: That is not the voice I expected, the voice of a man who has overcome (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showthread.php?t=37057) many challenges (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showthread.php?t=34299)! Instead, you sound quite like a man who is easy-going and would take green-screen images of himself to post on the Internet.

Sorry guys. I lost internet right after I made that post. If I would have known you were listening I would have made a couple shoutouts. I also would have made my voice sound a little more manly.

Next time I'm on is Wednesday from 10-midnight. At that time I'm allowed to play anything I want. Thanks for at least checking it out. I'm trying to organize an interview/cohosting date with Nikose if he's still willing.

Nice. I can Skype you in Wednesday night and finally give everyone the lowdown on the kindey excavation you had done. The station owners have actually been asking me about you.

Tonight's show will not be featuring a repeat performance by Nikose, I'm sorry to say. He has some personal matters to attend to.

T-minus 3 hours. I know Nikose is racing to get things done before the show starts. Hopefully he'll make it. We're planning some vidjagame talk tonight too. Again, mostly new country (which I'm actually starting to like) but rock is allowed if you'd like to request it.

This will probably be the last of my double-triple-quadruple posts in this thread.

Bob and Nikose, tomorrow night at 6pm EST. My schedule right now is set for the first and third Saturdays of the month at six o'clock, so no need for a bump every time it comes around.

It's fund-raising month for the station so I'll be whoring out stuff I borrowed forever from my dad's pharmacy in exchange for donations.
