View Full Version : Why Do We Kiss?

I was listening to a Ricky Gervais radio show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIXm_ZdAVFY), and they started talking about kissing - and I was wondering, the same as them, why we kiss? With Valentine's Day just 'round the corner, I think it a prudent question.

Because lips are sensitive? The same reasons we put any erogenous zones into contact.

Because it makes us all hot and bothered!

It's ver much a cultural thing. Fair chunks of the world just don't kiss (until got westernised anway). It was ver much a greek (and to some extent Roman) thin though romantic kissing is not reall mentioned in their works- more respect kiss used in both greetings and religious ceremonies- still seen in places like Ital and Greece today.
When it developed into the personal romantic gesture we have today is unclear, it was fairly late- in last few hundred years or so.

Which part? There's nothing particularly controversial in there.

Good people taste good.

What do evil people taste like then?

Because tongues are fun?

Tongues are fun is probably the best answer so far.

Because fucking outside would be a little too uncomfortable for others, so we needed a modest alternative?

I was going to say that women are delicious, but I guess that's been mentioned.

(well I guess technically it is but I mean, its like 65 out there. Fahrenheit, of course.)

We kiss because ants do! Or so Bernard Werber says. Of course, he says we do everything we do because the ants did it first, so...

Which part? There's nothing particularly controversial in there.

You'd say Caligula is dead and we'd need a source.

Look it's not that I'm bitter or anything but there's snow and ice outside and it's the same snow and ice that was there at New Year's Eve.

From what I hear, it was an evolutionary thing - where mothers used to pass food off to their young with a "kiss."

You'd say Caligula is dead and we'd need a source.

My stuff is all sourced from years of drunken conversations with hobokings and disgruntled student magazine editors. Take that as you will.

hobokings

At first I thought you said Hobgoblins or Goblin Kings and then I was disappointed.

Yeah, I remember something like that. When it finally melted, it had accumulated three full months worth of road muck + whatever else.

What do evil people taste like then? The obvious answer would be the animated GIF of Harry Osborn in Spider-man 3 going "SO GOOD". But I absolutely can't find it. >_>

I guess it's a different kind of good, like salt and sugar. Not that I kiss bad people a lot.

Edit: Oh there we go.
