View Full Version : What's Your Excuse?

My dad works in the same town as my school, so when he drives into work in the morning, I tag along and don't have to pay bus fare to get some book-learning.

Anyways, today, he was unavailable, so my mum drove me in. It's a soggy, wet, miserable day outside in "Beautiful British Columbia," so I kept my window closed. My mum smokes - quite heavily, in fact - and was content to leave her window open to let the smoke blow out. Well, the inevitable happened and a truck blew past us on the highway at around 90 KM/h, blowing in all of the water on its tires, which caused mum to curse.

"That wouldn't have happened if you had the window closed."

"That wouldn't have happened if this car was designed so that the rain couldn't get in!"

I didn't say anything because I'd probably regret it - but a number of arguments popped into my mind; "It is designed that way - with a window." Anyways, it occurred to me that we all make these excuses to protect our dignity, or to cover our asses. What's your best and/or more recent excuse?

What's a dignity?

Can you eat it?

You may now resume your regularly scheduled thread with the obvious post out of the way.

I, like most, make excuses, but I try not to. If I am owning up to something I have done I will usually preface with this:

"What I am about to tell you isn't an excuse, it is an explaination. It doesn't, and shouldn't absolve me from guilt, but it does explain what I did and why."

You may now go about posting jokes now that the serious post is out of the way.

I could say that covering my ass goes against my exhibitionist instincts, and I just did in order to fill my pun quota, but really the reason I don't make a lot of cheap excuses is that I'm pathologically unable to tell lies.

I guess I do use that as an excuse though. When people find me annoying, as they often do, I justify it by bringing up that some people don't, and that usually means they're good people.

(Yeah I assume everyone who dislike me are jerks by nature. Is that wrong?)

I tend to be another explainer, but for some reason, it never goes over well, so I've learned to just say, "yep, I did it, lemme fix it" and be done. Then I have to suffer through hours of bitching how I've caused irreparable damage and the world is going to end.

"It is designed that way - with a window."

That you didn't say this or something similar is the biggest tragedy.

WoW addiction, marriage, kids, girl scout cookie season. Are all excuses I'm currently using as to why I only post on these forums about once a year :p

Having small children has turned me into an excuse factory. You would not believe how much sweat you can produce when your 5 year old discovers his Christmas or Easter stuff in what you thought was a super secret hidey hole.

Hell my latest excuse was when their uncle said he saw whores out the window. It took 3 of us to convince them he said horse instead.

The thing is, if I had said it, I would've been walking to school.

Personally, I like the excuses people make in order to avoid saying anything remotely confrontational.

Well... I... uh - most of my best friends are black.

Well that's funny, 'cause no-one mentioned you at any of the meetings. And since I personally know every black person(and like, 50% of Mexicans, 30% of Asians, and 20% of all those others that nobody really cares about) ever, I would know if you had black friends or not.

My mum smokes - quite heavily, in fact

What's sad is that her actual reason for having the window open makes for a less stupid excuse than the one she gave.

I mean, come on, you don't even have to try.
