View Full Version : The sexy secrets behind NPF's Usernames

A Zarkin' Frood
04-18-2010, 04:39 PM
Good day, Nuklear Power Forumites.

When I click on Todays Posts under Quick Links there aren't many threads of interest to me right now. So instead of waiting, and effectively doing nothing about it, I hereby open a thread! Hurrah!
And what is the secret to a good thread? A topic everyone can contribute to!

It will go under soon, but at least I can say "Yes IG, you tried your best"

It's quite possible that there already is such a thread, but it's either locked or old. I just hope it's not a sticky, because I tend to ignore those (they can't be important, see?)

Tell me the secret behind your Internet handles. What does it mean? How did you get the idea for it? Which mod did rename you just to spite you?

Back in 2006 when I changed my nickname to InsaneGenius it was originally supposed to be Sanguine Melancholic, or Melanguine(due to Last.fm's 12-letter limit, which was the site I signed up on at that time). More or less for the hell of it. Because it somehow describes my personality but at the same time doesn't at all.
I decided to change it to InsaneGenius because, a few clich?s and conclusions later, it would still hold the same meaning.

I also think it's interesting to see how people refer to me. Some call me Insane, others call me Genius. And some go for IG.
I'm not sure whether this shows what people think of me or if it's just coincidence.

Most of you guys know the origins of my nickname so here is a condensed version.

Got drunk, used last name as pick up line. The end

I'm just always terrible at picking names.

Melfice
04-18-2010, 04:55 PM
I really liked the character Melfice from Grandia 2.

There's more to it now, but back when I signed up, that was it.

Doc ock rokc
04-18-2010, 05:02 PM
Doc Ock because he used to be my favorite villain...and Rokc to make myself unique...
honestly I respond to Doc alot more then my Real name. I like being called Doc.

Julford Hajime
04-18-2010, 05:55 PM
When I was 15 I was like hardcore weeaboo. Like my GOD I was terrible. I'd run around adding "-chan" to fucking EVERYTHING, not to mention desu. Dark days, those.

Anyway, I had to make up an original character for some Inuyasha-based (Or maybe Suikoden? I forget >.>) RP. So I started randomly arranging letters around in my head, and eventually came to Julford. I liked it, and kept it for the first name. Then I decided I wanted a Japanese-sounding last name for the character, and picked Hajime using random syllables. I later found out it was an actual word, but I didn't know the meaning then. Then I made him a moogle, because I love moogles >.>

So yeah. Julford Hajime was originally just a terribly out-of place moogle in a Inuyasha/Suikoden RP forum. I just kinda kept the name and used it for my own as I traversed the internet, hopping from forum to forum.

mine was mostly frustration/sloth induced. Back when I was 12 I was making up crappy stories, what with being twelve and all, and since names have ALWAYS been my weakness one of my designs got aerozord slapped on it. Fast forward to my early internet days and the annoyance of trying handle after handle just to get on a forum I finally thoughts, screw it, I made up the name so I know its not taken, and then just kept using it.

Why should I spoil it for you instead of seeing who is curious enough to go through weeks upon weeks on internet research to find the meaning behind my username?

Magus

Magi in general are pretty awesome, there is also Magus from Chrono Trigger and the magus from The Thief, which was an awesome book.

I thought you were named after the McDonalds burger??

As for mine, well yes, I have stated it here before, but I'll do so again. Oringinally on these here forums I was known as the Hawk of Battle, which I later shortened to simply Hawk, thanks to Fifthfiend. The Hawk of Battle moniker is a literal translation of my true name, which I always thought was immensely cool. Depending on your sources though, my real name can translate as "White Hawk", Little Hawk" or "The Hawk of May", as in the month of my birth, which is what my mum named me after. I prefer Hawk of Battle though, so I use that as my alias pretty much everywhere.

If you see a Hawk of Battle anywhere on the internet, it's probably me.

Si Civa
04-18-2010, 06:25 PM
I was 12 or something like that when I come up with this one. It sounds quite silly and stupid because of that. It's just two random words that didn't mean anything to 12 year old brat.
My username could be worse though. I could invent new one now
The funny part though is that there's actually one person in Finland whose name is Civa. The gender, however, is different even though it could explain many things!

So it's been my internet identity quite some time but then again I'm not signed in that many places anyway. I guess that last.fm and livejournal are the only places nowadays where I'm signed in with some degree variation of my username. (It's quite easy to but _ there you know)

Nowadays I use my real name even in my email address and MSN. (It's awfully common name though)

Wigmund
04-18-2010, 06:40 PM
I stole my name from my ancestors who probably stole the derivative of my family name from some local king name Wigmund (which is either old Scandinavian or Anglo-Saxon).

Thanks to one of my aunts doing genealogy on the family tree. Found out we were descended from farmers living in Hertfordshire, England. The name traces back further, but records get spotty.

Squall Leonhart

When I first signed in here, I used to be "BlackHBMage", in reference the 8-Bit character. The HB was in reference to my favorite anime character Hitokiri Battosai, better known as Kenshin Himura (or Himura Kenshin, if you're some kind of purist).

Then, I got bored and decided I looked too much of a fanboy. So, I started to dig around the member list and see what names were taken. After a few months of considering what I wanted, what was taken, and actually doing something about it, I sent Meister a PM that I wanted to change my name to Squall Leonhart, and actually cited the reason why (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpost.php?p=861480&postcount=4).

It's all cool though, since I know what you're all thinking (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpost.php?p=861643&postcount=6).

Ecks
04-18-2010, 06:57 PM
Okay, my turn. Started out as No_More_Than_Thirteen, which I derived from a dialogue between Roxas and Saix in Kingdom Hearts Numbery Days. I liked the way it sounded, and signed up under that name, complete with KH themed avatar and signature.

Fast forward a few months... having such a long username was a little awkward, people didn't know what to call me when referring to me by name (I'm aware of the irony in that people don't know what to call me now; for future reference, you can call me Ecks (like the character from Ballistic: Ecks Versus Sever) or you can call me Scizor, doesn't matter to me), and as I had finished KH and I had dove into Pokemon again in preparation for HG/SS, I thought a little about it and decided to go with EckScizor. When spoken aloud, the pronunciation sounds like the Bug type move "X-Scissor" and, as many people no doubt already guessed, Scizor is my favorite Pokemon. I've carried a Scizor on every team I've ever put together since the original Gold and Silver released ten years ago. Some kind soul threw a few avatars my way, including an animated gif of the Pokemon Crystal sprite for Scizor (the one I use today), and the rest is history. Aside from the occasional update to my sig, I doubt anything else will change anytime soon.

The Sevenshot Kid

Now I really regret choosing the name.

I was watching an episode of Fullmetal Alchemist(back when it was first running) where Greed appears as I was trying to think of a username, and thought "he's pretty cool and I'm pretty materialistic, let's go with that". And I did.

Edit: did anyone else get some sort of time paradox going, cause when I posted, Mike had already posted. Weird. New forum hasn't quite settled in space-time yet.

Yes, I was somewhere around 13 when I made it, why do you ask? <_< >_>

Yrcrazypa
04-18-2010, 08:11 PM
Mine comes from way back when Diablo 2 first came out. I made a necromancer named Yrcrazypa, because back then, that was as long as the name could fit. It's been one of the three or so usernames I've had that stuck. It's also the shortest, and least silly of the three that I still go by, so it's the best one to go by.

Mine comes from a character I created back in highschool. He was an assassin who had a thing for top hats. And also trenchcoats, because those are so cool and any badass worth his salt has one.

I even styled a signature after him for awhile before I grew up.

Fantasy name generator when I used to play MUDs. I've no idea why this one has stuck with me so long over the dozens of others I've grabbed from a generator over the years.

Possibly because it gets mispelled so often!

phil_
04-18-2010, 08:49 PM
My name's Phil. I have a brother named Mike. We used to get joint magazine subscriptions as Phil Mike "Last Name." So, when the internet became a place where children could post on forums, we used phil_mike for our name, because there was no point in having two accounts.

Then there became a reason for us to have separate accounts, so we got the mods to axe the mike from my name, and we became phil_ and _mike. The underscore is a scar of our separation. There are pictures. I can't find them.

Bob The Mercenary
04-18-2010, 09:18 PM
One day in middle school one of my friends told me to buy a game that had just come out, Team Fortress Classic. I had never played an online game in my life, much less an FPS. Just to put it in perspective, this was back in the days when the internet was so slow I had to order the game patches on a cd.

First thing it asked for was a nickname, I had a terrible imagination back then so I just used my real nickname, Bob. Over the course of a few hours of play, I noticed these groups of letters at the beginning of players' handles. I asked what they were, they told me they were clan tags. I asked how to get one, they said I needed to join a clan. I asked how, they told me to let people know I was looking for a clan.

Therefore, 'the Mercenary' was appended. I've used this name for basically everything I've ever done ever...except taxes and the census. I plan on fixing that soon.

Then there became a reason for us to have separate accounts, so we got the mods to axe the mike from my name, and we became phil_ and _mike. The underscore is a scar of our separation.

I've been wondering about that for years.

CelesJessa
04-18-2010, 09:25 PM
When I was a kid my brothers and I would play video games together. Whenever we played a game that would allow it, we would name all of the characters after people we knew/each other, although my name was too long for the box, so my brother shortened it to Jessa. Although, the very first time he played FF6 he named Terra after me, but I ended up liking Celes the best. So every time I played the game after that I always named Celes Jessa.

Kind of lame but yeah.

Ironically, that kind of fits with BoF's horrible, abbreviated translations. It's the main reason your username makes me think of the series.

McTahr
04-18-2010, 11:43 PM
Effectively, McTahr is one of two RP characters I've created.

Ginkel McTahr, an apeshit loco gnome psionicist who's prone to screaming and freaking out and teleporting his minions inside a cake on his birthday because the architecture (Yes, of the cake) reminded him of the ancient ruins he teleports around seeking to this day. Unfortunately, he teleports them all at once of course, and they explode, but that's not his problem. And so on. Every. Single. Day. (He's fun to play.)

McTahr Len, a...still slightly insane philandering sage.

Rick Zarber was a character I created/played in 1997 for our first (and to date, only) feature-length movie. When we first got the internet in my house a few years later I used it as my email address and AIM screen name. I just sort of stuck with it ever since, and "RickZarber" has become my persona for everything I do online.

04-19-2010, 01:14 AM
I was high on The Invisibles after reading it for about the fifth time and changing my entire way of thinking for the second time. So there's that.

The last book of the series is called The Invisible Kingdom, so it was a short step to make myself royalty. Royalty with invisible, nonexistent power. Seemed like a funny idea. I suppose I wanted to be a soapbox for Invisiblism. I used to have a blank avatar and a signature that said something along the lines of "Close your eyes and see me." No wait, it was "You have read a post by the Invisible Queen. Now open your eyes and go back to sleep."

How ironic that most of my posts went unnoticed until I decided to be myself instead.

Anyway, you could call me Jenny if you want to be more personable. I never liked the IQ abbreviation, it makes me look like an intellectualist.

04-19-2010, 01:19 AM
I believe I've told this story before, but here we go again.

Way back in those dark days, an age were words were just beginning to form, numbers were confused with letters and wild battle.nets roamed free.

I was but a wee lad of 12, exposed to the full wild glory of the internets for the first time after escaping the dark dungeons of AOL. I'm ashamed to admit it but I was overwhelmed by the freedom, my feeble senses were not prepared to absorb that much stimuli at the same time. It was in this state I began to idolize the concept of hackers, to me they were the wizards of the digital world. Breaking not just the rules of society, but the fundamental laws of (digital) nature.

And so the concept of 'Hack Mage' was born, a sorcerer of nearly unlimited power in the digital landscape, ready to destroy any barriers that stood in his way. Of course it was the dark days of 'leet speak' the 'Hack Mage' became 'h4x.m4g3'.

And thus my tale began.

Lyaer
04-19-2010, 01:25 AM
I was leaving a chat room and somebody said "lyaer" at me. They meant "later." My first thought was that it sounded like an elf name from some cheesy fanfiction about elfs (and if you type it in Google you will probably find some) so I put it on and it stuck.

Before that I was Mr. McMooo, which like three of you might recognize. That came from being put on the spot to name an e-mail address when I was thirteen and liked alliteration too much. I used that name back and forth with Lyaer for a while, but decided to phase it out. I think I still am on some messengers, though.

"I was a stupid teenager, The Thread, The Movie, The Game"

I object! I wasn't a stupid teenager. ...I was a socially inept teenager who had an Aqua Teen Hunger Force DVD on in the background while I registered for this board, who thought the reference would totally make me one of the cool kids around here. (That is what happened, right?)

I'm surprisingly happy with the name, actually, given that I'm usually horrible at naming things. (Naming characters in RPGs stops me dead for around ten minutes for each character. It used to be longer until I resorted to leafing through my copy of the complete works of Shakespeare looking for something that sounds kind of right.)

Anyway, if you see a Satan's Onion anywhere else, it might very well be me; as far as I know I'm the only one who uses this name.

any particular reason for those colors though? few people even know what mauve is and probably fewer know how to pronounce it No real reason, other than they had unusual sounding names and were not easily recognizable. Hell, I didn't even know the exact shade mauve was when I signed up. That's the real reason why my sprite is magenta and lavender.

And I've always pronounced "mauve" as "Mawve," where the "au" sounds like the first syllable of "awesome." I know some people say "mohve," so it rhymes with "cove," but that's not nearly as cool.

Years ago, I needed a name for a necromancer in Diablo 2. Due to being terrible with coming up with names myself, I decided to just rip one off, the necromancer hero from Master of Magic (which you can only recruit when you have Death magic, which I seldom had, flying, invisible, magic immune combination was just too fun).

After that, it just stuck

I always thought it was "Mawve" too, until I heard the Doctor pronounce it "Mohve", so now I am in a existential quandry. I prefer the "Mawve" pronounciation, but I don't want to contradict the Doctor. It's very troubling.

Being twelve, having a "Q" letter obsession and needing a name that wasn't taken for "My first MMO".

04-19-2010, 10:14 AM
Come ye all and sit around, fo I bring a tale from the ancient times. A time when the gods themselves walked on this earth and did bring great prosperity to those who did worship them. For this was before the Darkness came and swept all of it away and changed the face of this earth.

In the olden days when we were naught but a thought in our gods minds they did set out upon this world with a plan. That plan was to provide the usage of electronic devices. Lo and Behold, for they did bestow upon us mortal's the devices that we so coveted and all was good. The gods smiled approvingly at us as we used the devices they bestowed on us to further or lives for the better.

Then one god thought that enjoyment could come from these items and did take a select few individuals and instruct on them the way of the Gamer. This men would become known as Designers! And would be given gifts and wealth for their insight and ability. The mass were pleased by this new development of this aspect of technology and did worship the gods anew! and treated the designers as their prophets!

From these Designers came a mind unlike any that had been around before. His name would be forever likened to greatness and he would become like unto a god! He did create a game unlike an other, and he did bestow upon his creation the name of Total Annihilation and all was good for a time. Though Total Annihilation was greatness he did find it lacking! Thus did Chris Taylor release a expansion of the game, adding more units onto the game. The Pinnacle unit was the Krogoth, for it did tower over the others. This was viewed as more greatness by the masses and there was much rejoicing! One of the Masses loved the unit so much he did take it and wander the internet using it as a username. He thought to make it more original so he did add a moniker at the end, thus allowing for the lower possibility of one trying to steal his beloved username. Thus he became known as KrogothWolf! and he did begin a reign of terror on the interwebs, helping ushering in the darkness that would soon bring calamity to the world of the Gamers, that his name is now one of the unloved and despised.

But that is a story for another time.....

TL;DR. I took the name Krogoth from the awesome unit from the awesome expansion pack, from the awesome came Total Annihilation. And added Wolf causes wolves are cool!

I always thought it was "Mawve" too, until I heard the Doctor pronounce it "Mohve", so now I am in a existential quandry. I prefer the "Mawve" pronounciation, but I don't want to contradict the Doctor. It's very troubling.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be pronounced "Mohve" (that's how I've always thought of it) but it might be a regional thing, and either way a person's name should be pronounced how they want it to be pronounced.

I mean if you desperately want it to be like the color, then I dunno, dictionary it up or something. But you could always use "Mawve" like a name and "Mage" like a title, like Mawve, MD. Or Mawve, Ph. D. Or Mawve, Dinosaur Hunter.

Yeah I'm gonna call you Mawve from now on.

What bothers me is just how often I run into a forum where three letter names don't fit the name length requirement....

Anyway, time to delve into the nerdy pool. Tev is short for Tev Loneglade which was the alias of my favorite Plansewalker from Magic the Gathering; Tevesh Szat. I'm still angry that Urza managed to sacrifice him to fuel a bomb that blasted open the fifth sphere of Phyrexia.

Either way, if you see a Tev, [Tev], -Tev-, _Tev_, or <Tev> anywhere it's either me or one of you jerks here who stole my only username.

If you see a Lev kick him in the groin for me. That username is too close for my comfort.

Or Mawve, Dinosaur Hunter.
I'm not comfortable with this for obvious reasons.... >_>

Had a friend who played one of the MGS games (can't remember which) a few years ago get hopelessly confused with Ocelot's name. Decided to run with it. I've seen a fair few people think my username is actually Revolver (and one person start yelling for copying it exactly). Another name I tend to use is Krayzin, made it up a while ago for something... maybe a WoW character? Liked it anyway.

I've said this before, but mine is the result of an old password being turned into an email and used here for a user handle because I didn't think I'd be sticking around.

To break it down:
Blue - my favorite color
Star - because I pulled it from an RP character's last name
Ultor - Latin for "avenger," because the Avengers cartoon had just come out, I had gotten really good at pulling strings to give people who pissed off my friends and I a ton of misery, and I'd been futzing around with Latin

What can I say? It was high school.

Especially since the pronunciation issue came up in one of my favorite episodes. But the way I see it, the Doctor can break any rules of logic, grammar, or physics that he likes and STILL be right, even though it's still wrong for the rest of us.

Also, he's an alien. English isn't even his native tongue; the TARDIS could be mistranslating it. Yes. That's it exactly.

My last name is foreign (ie. not of finnish origin) and some friends at the scouts decided to call me Osterbaum because of that. I dunno. In any case, once I started using IRC back in the 6th grade or something I picked Osterbaum as my SN. NPF was like the second place I ever needed a SN and I used Osterbaum again. These days I'm Osterbaum just about everywhere, as long as it's available.

Now that you come up, I always liked your previous name better.Eh, I got tired of it. It was stupid (seriously, it was), and I just prefer it when people call me Mike.

Someone once told me my current name is boring. Which might be one of the dumbest comments I've ever received (as it completely misses the point).

PyrosNine
04-19-2010, 03:52 PM
My name is both generic and stolen. Technically. Some other guy had the same name when I showed up, so I added a Nine, and then he changed his name either because he was too polite to demand me to change mine, or because he came up with a better one, "Incendius."

Because of this, people who I have interacted with the most started calling me "Nein.", or P9 when the other Pyros was around. Sadly, almost no one who called me that still frequents these forums a lot, or sees any reason to call me that since there's not been another Pyros for a few years.

Part of me wonders if Pyros has been here too long to still be just Pyros.

Looks like it's French (surprise!). The French pronunciation on there sounds closer to "muv" as in "push" than anything, but maybe closer to "mohve" than "mawve." In any case, both of those are recognized in English, and when you get right down to it, words are defined by usage, not dictionaries, so.

Overcast, simple thing I was thinking about clouds that day and so I put it down.

This was just about an eternity ago after I found out they had basically dumped the old forums and thus the account I had forced into hiatus. Which was good because that is where I dumped most of my internet noobishness anyway(apologies for that by the way[twice so since I still had a couple ounces to dump off]) and I have never used this name for anything else since.

My name should be obvious to any 8-bit reader. I have considered changing or shortening it on many occasions especially with the new forums making it inconvenient. I'm keeping it like this though. Long and cumbersome, out of spite for the people who made it so I have to change it out of convinience, and not on my own whim.

Magi in general are pretty awesome, there is also Magus from Chrono Trigger and the magus from The Thief, which was an awesome book.

I was wholly convinced that I was the only person to ever read this book. I never thought I would meet someone else in the depths of the interwebs who has read it.

My original name DruidoftheDead was born of my love of undead. Everything has a protector, civilization, nature, but not the undead. They idea of an undead druid tickled me enough that I had to use it as a persona.

Eventually I got bored with it as I got older and decided to turn my druid email address into a spam email since that's what it had in it more than anything already. Stuck with no originality (I find good inspiration rarely) I asked my 4 year old daughter to spell something for me. She threw together the letters that form this name. Unfortunately the name was taken so I asked her for a number. Being 4 years old, 4 was the most important number to her and she picked it.

I've considered switching back to Druid but I'll probably wait until I have an internet company that won't try to screw me over for at least 6 months and I'm more active again before I make such a change.

Certainly, I - being clearly an intellectual - would never stoop to such "n00b1shn3ss" as to name myself after a villianous console game character simply because he "looked cool" and the concept "sounded cool", I shall tell you this much right now. Lev:
Lev means "heart" in Hebrew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew).
Lev is a male first name and sometimes last name of Slavic origin, which translates as Lion.
The name also appears in the forms Liev, Lyev, Leo, Leon.

The strange thing is, is that Lev is just a shortened name for Leviathan, my tag since 2004 or so (begun in starcraft), Lev working so well is just a coincidence seeing as my mentality and signs are Fire, Sun, Dragon, Leo//VirgoRising.

Leo-Taurus Compatibility

Unless both practice compromise, there will be conflict. Leo thrives on attention and affection.Taurus naturally dishes out. Taurus often tolerates being dominated by Leo. Until, one day, the worm turns. Leo's big ideas can be disturbing to the conservative Taurus.

They can both be intransigent and neither will give in to the other one.You see, they're both fixed signs.

Mine's pretty straight forward actually.

When I originally joined the Top Web Comics forum back in 2002/2003 sort of time area, I was around 12 years old. Dragonball Z was still cool. Hence I named myself Super Saiyan, except I mispelled it, instead being Surper Saiyan. Everyone just abbreviated it to SS anyways.

Eventually I outgrew my DBZ phase. However, I did not outgrow my lifelong obsession with Star Wars. Not wanting to abandon my time honoured moniker entirely, I decided to throw Darth in there, followed by the SS nickname.

Hence, Darth SS.

Raiden

man, these threads seem to pop up every few years. Gets me nostalgic.

way WAY back in the yesteryear of High School Freshman Year, I was first able to get online to start joining forums. That was cool until I realized all these people had these awesome names, and I was simply using "schadetj" for all my stuff. That wasn't cool at all, so I sat down to figure out a good name. Golden Sun had just come out (think it was 1. Might have been 2. Honestly can't remember which) and I was playing it like a fiend, and one of the weapons in it is the Storm Brand, which can unleash a power involving Raiden. So I picked that one.

But of course, Raiden had already been TAKEN on the TWC forums, so I picked Raiden54 and used that for a long while. Eventually I had a mod cut it down to Raiden, and when Nuklear Power switched over to having their own forum board over here I just took dibs on Raiden.

It's stuck around.
