View Full Version : "Dear Liquor Stores: Since When Is "Peaty" A Taste?" "Is Cheap Gledinvelt Worth It?"
So while I was out today, I picked up some Canadian Whiskey. I had originally gone to pick up Some Wild Turkey, but they were out, so whatever. Anyways, I spotted some Gldeinvelt whiskey for around $20 to $30, and I was a little curious.
As a whiskey drinker, I decided to ask a clerk if I should purchase it. She told me that its flavor was somewhat peaty, and smokey. Smoke is a gas, I believe, and my only experiences with peat have been with peat moss.
What I'm getting at is "What does this particular bit of whiskey taste like? As someone who's been asked to describe the taste of a few whiskeys, I know that sometimes it's a little hard to think of the right adjectives, but I can damn well come up with things better than "peaty."

Get some peat moss. Smoke it over a fire. Enjoy (or don't).
That is the taste he was describing.

I suspect they make up all these fancy words to describe whiskey cause no one wants to admit it tastes like hot, burning ass on fire, and the only discernible difference between five and five hundred dollar whiskey is the latter burns additional holes in your pockets. It's like the Emperor's new clothes. That are on fire.
Doesn't peaty mean swampy?
whiskey
This tastes good.

This is smoking, not drinking.

There's a difference. Cheap whiskey makes you go blind.

Okay but health issues aside, is there a difference taste-wise?

Older whisky tastes more like wooden barrel?

This is smoking
No, it's cooking.
Edit: A kind of cooking that leaves the flavor of the smoke (which differs depending on the wood, hickory is popular) in the food. Which is how something can have a smokey flavor.

Oh, okay. I didn't think of it like that. But as someone who doesn't normally check off those particular flavors mentally while drinking, would a bottle of my preferred stuff (http://www.forpeatsake.com/Wiser%27s/Wiser%27s+De+Luxe/1) be equal to a bit of this? (https://www.fine-wine.com.au/shop/spirits/malt-whisky/glenlivet/18-year-old-43-4/)
I'm factoring in price - in my area, a 750mL or Wisers is something like $20, while a 350mL of 18 year old Glenlivet is something like $30 - as well as taste. And I have been known to have terrible taste.

expensive whiskey is smoother, but warms you less.
Cheap whiskey makes you want to kill yourself and feel like your insides are on fire.
both are delicious :)

To answer the question. "Smokey" is just what people have been saying, and just how it sounds, it makes you taste the kinda smell you get from a camp fire. But with the taste of Whiskey being so strong it's actually just kind of an accent to it. Sort of like an aftertaste, at least that I've noticed.
*if you really want to taste smokey flavor try Lapsang souchong tea, that stuff would make a good run for a steak*
Peaty is hard to describe, but I think the best thing I can say is that Scotch tends to be a peaty drink. I don't really know how else to describe it, ask the people at the distributors if they could help you out a little more, or if they have whiskey tastings that you could be a part of.

I don't care to enter into a discussion on the nuances of the words used to describe whiskeys, but I definitely have poured myself a glass in honor of this thread.

Man, if you're complaining how store describes a whiskey taste, pray to god you never have to listen to wine tasters describe the taste of wine. Jesus H Meister do they have weird ways to describe tastes.

Pretty sure peaty is another way of saying an earthy taste. Think mushrooms. Or go dig a hole in your backyard. Deep enough to stand in. Stand in it. Sniff. That's a peaty smell. Now tranfer that to taste. Basically it's really really dry and kinda bitter.
Or maybe peaty is entriely different from earthy.
Jesus H Meister
Wasn't aware Meister had gone and achieved apotheosis. Or is this just some weird cult thing?

A little of column A and a little of column B.
Speaking of Beer though, Ontario Banned Samichlaus beer because it's name translates to St. Nicholas in Swiss-Germany, so it appeals to underage drinkers.
Plus they Banned Crystal Head Vokda cause it appeals to underage bing drinkers
Go Ontario!

Uhn.... Peaty Taste = A Taste that recalls of peat?
So... WIKIPEDIA!
Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation matter. Peat forms in wetland bogs, moors, muskegs, pocosins, mires, and peat swamp forests. Peat is harvested as an important source of fuel in certain parts of the world. By volume there are about 4 trillion m³ of peat in the world covering a total of around 2% of global land mass (about 3 million km²), containing about 8 billion terajoules of energySo... Peaty Taste means:
A) Nothing
B) 8 Billion Terajoules of Energy
C) Fuel
D) Just read a little more of the wikipedia article and see this "Peat fires are used to dry malted barley for use in Scotch whisky distillation. This gives Scotch whisky its distinctive smoky flavour, often called "peatiness"."
E) Decayed Vegetation

*shrug* While I have no qualms with making fun of it and other domestic lights, it does at least have as much taste as those flavoured tonic waters you can buy at the grocery store.

I have found the flavoured tonic waters usually taste fairly gross.
When I drank it was Sleeman's Honey Brown, Rickard's Red or Guinness. I never really understood why you'd go out to drink then buy light beers, seems silly, then the person brags about how much they can drink while drinking light beer.

Gldeinvelt whiskey for around $20 to $30
Generally, when it comes to scotch, you're probably gonna get what you pay for.
One time, long ago, I let someone pick out a bottle of scotch for me. Long story short, we're still not on speaking terms.
Now, now, if that's just a horrible horrible bastardization of what should be Glenlivet, then by all means, help yourself.

Peaty is not a taste, salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and astringent are tastes.
Peaty would be a flavor.
But yes she described it quite profoundly.

you fuckers are spoiled. I need to pay anywhere between 40 and 60 bucks for a 750ml bottle of obsello, and I have to wait over a week for it to get shipped to me because the only absinthe stocked in delaware is piss like grande absenta.
