View Full Version : Awesome Foods
What have you eaten that stands out as something really goddamn awesome?
When I was in Japan, we ate a ramen place, and it was just fantastic. In the US, when I think of ramen I think of that cheap shit you get pre-packaged at the grocery story. This had tons of ingredients and actual friggin flavor.
When I lived in Pocatello, there was this Mexican place that served the best burritos I have ever eaten. This isn't Taco Bell "burritos". This is what a real burrito is. Dripping with juices and flavor, and with some real fucking salsa. Goddamn I miss that place. T_T

I've been trying a variety of fancy-pants gourmet cheeses lately, and I've discovered some absolutely delightful things. Gouda with apple slices, for instance, is now one of my favorite foods ever, and Brie on sourdough toast is great.
I also really, really like eggplant slices fried in olive oil with salt, pepper and garlic powder; and asparagus cooked just right (too many people boil it until it's floppy, which is a mistake--it needs to be firm and tender-crisp) is a treat.

Snake Steak. It was a little tough, but had an odd taste that was just.... good.

Hummus. It's very cheap and easy to make at home and tastes delicious on everything. I usually just add lots of fresh garlic but sometimes I'll add some cilantro for something different.
When I have the time I like to make my own bread, too, with garlic salt and dried rosemary. It doesn't last very long once it's out of the oven.

You ate the whole place?! Godzilla!
My dad frequently makes lasagna or pasta sauces that are completely mouth watering, and a good cut above even the most gourmet Italian restaurants I've ever been to. Likewise, I can't even touch grocery packaged, or lower-end pastas anymore.
Bread and Crotonese or Friulano cheeses are awesome combinations, I don't even need anything else to go with it.
Filet mignon wrapped in bacon. Mmmm.
Hummus.
Seconded, seconded hard! Though I am pretty picky with my hummus. There's only one store-bought variety I've come across where I don't scoff and go "Bah! You call this hummus?" There's a local shawarma place that just makes the best though, better than anything I can make at home even. So much garlic, so fantastic. Don't even get me started on their garlic sauce, it's so good it'd need its own thread.

Koren Mondu is an appetizer dish made similarly to pot stickers. A filling mixture of pork sausage, cabbage, and small amounts of other seasonings and vegetables is cooked and then wrapped in a kind of thin pastry pouch. Then its deep fried. Most delicious thing ever.

Smoked eel sushi. I didn't even know it was eel until I asked the makers. It was then I've decided to keep an open mind about things and try it before I make a judgement.
Also, has anyone here tried a grilled pizza?

Yes. And to answer the follow up, yes.
There is this amazing Japanese steak house near my house, they have ramen, miso soup, and many other great things. Haven't found one thing on the menu that I don't like.
Alligator and Kangaroo is quite good too, actually.

Buffalo chicken pizza, when done right, is utterly amazing. Unfortunately, I've seen maybe two places do it right. It's not hard people! You take small pieces of boneless buffalo chicken, and put it on pizza!

BLT Pizza also falls into this category.

'Spider-Rolls' are good. It's basically deep fried crab suhsi rolls. The best ones are the ones you cannot eat in one bite.
My wife buys snacks at the local Korean market so we get some neat stuff... the latest is a package of ice cream sandwhiches layered with sweet red beans. Also it is in the shape of a fish. They are excellent.

Thadius happens to have an awesome recipie for this Italian style bread that is awesomely awesome. One day I've sworn that I will:
1.) Get a toaster oven
2.) Get a slice of that bread
3.) Butter it, sprinkle on some garlic salt and cheese
4.) Toast it
5.) Die happy

My recipe for awesome dip:
1 medium tub of sour cream (I prefer Roundy's)
1 packet McCormick Brown Gravy Mix
1 tsp minced dried onion
1 bag sour cream and onion or original flavor chips, or any other flavor you want to try
Mix first 3 ingredients together right in the sour cream tub, open chips, enjoy a cheap, delicious treat that will probably not last long enough to see sunrise.

I can't have just one awesome food. I have to have an awesome meal. So, here it is:
Start with your favorite appetizer, it really doesn't matter what or even if you have one. Next, have a medium rare 16 oz steak, preferably Angus, marinated in garlic powder, red wine vinaigrette, just the barest hint of worcestershire sauce, and lemon pepper. Grill it. That is necessary. With that comes home grown corn, on or off the cob, your choice, but either way, cook it with a few teaspoons of butter and about 1/8 cup of garlic powder, keep the water from it, because it's going to be poured over the coals before you grill the steak. Last, make real mashed potatoes, not instant, mix onion and garlic squares, sliced thinly as you can in.
For dessert, I like my fiancee's apple pie, which I'd tell you how to make, but I can't figure out how she does it. After that, you can die happy, or have something else at suppertime.
