View Full Version : Heat-induced apathy.

So, the temperature is 31C outside. Now I guess for the average American that's nothing, but my problem (and everyone else's problem around where I live) is that we're not American, we're English limeys. Even worse, I'm crazy and ginger which means I'm pale-skinned, can't tan properly and super-heat sensitive. Ultimately, when I step outside to try and do something like go for a bike ride, do some gardening etc. etc., I end up just falling over and melting like a slug.

So, er, what I guess I'm saying is that I can't go anywhere at the moment and I'm whining to you guys. Yeah. Perhaps some crazy ideas to fix this that have a 80% chance of killing me? I think I'm drunk on heat, if that's even possible.

~87 F!~ Wow! Don't come to Texas in summer. we haven't had a day under 98F/~37C in a month. It Literally Rained yesterday and it only took the temp down 3 degrees from the now usual 102F

Go to sauna.

Or because you are a silly English type and you don't have (proper at least) saunas there, you can boil water in a kettle and swim in it (if you're tiny enough). After it you can drink tea.

Because I've that same kind of summer apathy, but hot, wet places are the best. Which means you need either drink coffee or go and fight a snowball fight.

The temp here in Georgia has been high 80s to mid 90s for the past couple weeks. That wouldn't be so bad by itself, but the humidity is also 60%+. I'm totally with you on the heat apathy thing.

Especially since my ac is on the fritz.

Take a very hot shower.

Like, So hot your skin BURNS, and let the bathroom fill up with that steam and heat. Endure it as long as you can. Then dry with a towel, redress and go outside on your back porch for fresh air.

You will encounter the most amazing breeze from outside. It will be ~magical~ my friend.

This is an old Canadian secret for dealing with out 2 days of warm weather we get a year, when we must melt and rebuild our igloos. It is a tradition, of sorts, in this country.

You have no right to complain until you have endured 115 degree (44 for non-Americans) weather with 90% humidity. For 3 months straight.

I usually beat the heat by swimming in the pool.

That's impossible! It's to cold up there even for indoor pool! Everyone knows edmonton only has ice rinks.

Drink lots of water/Gatorade-ish type drinks. It helps the sluggish feeling.

Its only in the high 80s-mid 90s in Mississippi, but the heat index is in the 100s. Humidity by the MS river is atrocious.

Yeah, you're too far north for liquid water to still exist. Unless your pool is filled with Cranberry juice, then maybe. That shit never freezes up here.

Also, try swimming in a pool of cranberry juice. It's fantastic and not sticky at all.

Woo-whee! Are they ever! From the bi-annual cattle stampede, right? Man, they can NEVER get that stuff all cleaned up! They even came over and borrowed Ontario's GOOD hose to clean that mess up.

must stick some in the freezer when I get home.

cranberry ice cubes + cranberry juice= not watered down but very cold juice.

If you don't like the heat, create a freeze-gun and create a cool-weather system within the bounds of your property.

You Canadians have it good. Here in Wisconsin, we have a fish problem. As in our beaches annually get flooded with dead fish. The kids use them as flags for their sand castles. Walk down the beaches in Milwaukee in summer and they crunch under your feet. It's so bad we've thrown up our hands and made a party out of it. It's called the "Running of the Alewives."

Bi-annual? Try Bi-quarterly. those cows just keep walking through here like they own the damn place! the heat just makes it even ten times worse! But I'll take the cow crap roads over the no summer any day. Honestly, you'd think those Edmontonians would wise up and realize that not only does no one want to even play hockey there, they don't even get a break from the water freezing the minute they fill a pool up.

Thats why Im heading to burlington for a week, to get away from the pre-stampede stench!

Screw ya'll. I'm from Wisconsin and know for a fact you're all winter wonderlands up there because it's a winter wonderland down here. The only person not living in an igloo is Lev, because he's in a magic faerie land with palm trees! :P

Seriously, it's freakin' JUNE and we've had like two days of actual summer weather so far. This is really weird for us.

Goddamnit, I'm envious. 31C is pretty much perfect for me. But it's -2C here and I'm freezing cause we only have one heater (cause we only need it like a few weeks a year) and it's nowhere near this PC, so my hands which I can't cover cause I don't have any gloves or mittens are getting really fucking cold. Every year I think I'll get a pair just for these nights in July and August where it gets below 5C, but never get around to it.

Also not sure the red hair has anything to do with the heat problem, it's probably just the English thing. I'm also a red head and I'm not really comfortable unless it's over 28 or so. But then again I can actually tan to a fair degree so eh maybe my family's red heads are just weird.

Regarding the hair, I'm the first person in my family to have this colour in living memory. Possibly the first ever. Of course, this has made me something of an anomaly in all aspects of life.

Agreed. I live about 50 miles from the Mexican border, and it's only been recently that the desert's been getting over 90-100*F. Near the coastline they're about 30 degrees cooler.

Bright and sunny though.

Over here in the Garden State (New Jersey) it's barely 95 over here. Though it's been storming quite a bit over here. (I'd swear we where hit by a hurricane yesterday If I didn't know any better).

Same here really. If it's anything like it is here where buildings so far down South do not have insulation (Good for warm weather, bad for unexpected cold weather).

I enjoy the cold quite a lot, however only when I am outside in it.

-8 in your apartment when there is no insulation is not very nice.

What the heck? Guys North and South of me in this thread are cool, and it's been hitting 100F all week here. I go outside and start sweating. I can hardly keep it under 90F in my room because of the bad insulation. Add on that my shower ranges from scalding hot to just under scalding hot, and it adds up to it's hot in here!

Enjoy your freezing temperatures, people. I'll just keep commuting an hour to work and an hour back in 100 degree weather with no AC. At least my left arm's getting a nice tan.

The sweat. It won't stop. Everything is wet.

Two days ago a front came through, but it was more like a false front [/joke] because it only increased the humidity, if that's even possible. Heat index was 100, btw.

if it goes over 80 degrees, it's hot in my mind. I'm glad I work at night, since it's hot here in Jersey, and I have to work outside. Still extremely uncomfortable though.

When the power was knocked out by the storm the day before yesterday we had to evacuate our home because it was so damn hot and muggy. Lucky for us the power was back on around 8 and most of the road blocks were gone so we didn't have to stay in a hotel for the night.

Chinook is a type of wind that makes the area warmer then usual in the winter i believe.

Chinooks are a tiny indigenous people to Canada that follow us around and massage any bare skin they see as part of their initiation rites into adulthood. They are the Canadian equivalent to the Brownies from English legend.
