So... uhn... yeah.

I was talking to some friends of mine and the World Cup came up. As in the next one in 2014 being in Brazil and all... We were discussing about the Vuvuzelas and how pretty much everyone considered them "culturally beautiful and overall annoying" and that, if people decided to replace that with Something here in Brazil, it would likely to be Drums.

From then on the discussion went on to cover what could happen during a Football match if you had 8000 Drums playing in almost perfect rhythm during a match...

You see, one of the most important stadiums here for the World cup holds about 80.000 people, so 8000 is just 10% even though that's a big load of drums and i wouldn't be really surprised if the number was higher.

I mentioned that i had no idea of what something like that could actually cause, but it's something you could probably calculate or understand with a certain margin of "what if" if you put some thought into it.

...surprise for me, now they want me to see if i can find something out.

So, here's where i come to you with semi-relevant data!

What kind of Drums?
The exact same kind you could find on Michael Jackson's "They don't care about us" video in Rio de Janeiro

What is the stadium in question and it's data?
Twe talked about Maracană:

Size: about 110 x 75 m or 360 x 246 feet

So, We talked about 8000 Drums and we talked about 65.000 drums playing at the same time, during a match.

All sorts of crazy talked went down. From the noise being worse than Vuvuzelas, to the actual soundwaves causing nausea... but i trully don't know.

So, who wants some food for thought?

So what (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpLXQorSQe8) are you talking about? Getting everyone to bring a drum to the World Cup so they can deafen each other?

Hell, if Physics allow me i would like to alter the course of a Football in midair or knock a player over with sheer sound of some goddamn drums! But i don't think physics like to play like that.

Also, just for consideration... this is what 300 Percussion instruments sound like over here..

I think the sound sources will be too dispersed to do anything interesting with shockwaves. But it would probably have a massive psychological effect, and you don't even need to be synchronized for that. They use war drums for a reason. . .
