Well, I'm going to have one anyway....after I build it. It's time to buckle down and begin construction on a weapon for my Steampunk costume. As this will be my first prop creation I have found a good likeness of what I wish my gun to look like when it is finished to use as a model. Baby steps people.

Anyway, a major hurdle of finding parts to create your futuristic/primitive neo-Victorian weapon is of course finding real world analogs to things you would like your device to have. Here's where you come in. I'm not very good yet at looking at something, breaking it down into its component shapes, and then finding things that are similar to use as materials. I'm hoping some of you are better than I.

Here's the base weapon:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/Loneglade/Gun.jpg?t=1280453720

From Stock to Barrel here's what I see:
-The stock parts are wood which can easily be found and carved. The two pieces seem to be connected by some copper piping that resembles a cable splitter but I don't know what it is.

-The trigger area is the hardest for me as I do not recognize more of the smaller parts. The pressure gauge will be easy to find as will the electrical tubing that travels the length of the barrel.

-The "power pack" on this weapon is interesting. It looks like a decorative tea candle holder that has been attached to some glowing device. I have the perfect candle holder already. I just need to sort out the best way to make the glowing part. I also haven't decided if I want to mount the power pack on the side as shown or try to mount it in the middle of the barrel with the two copper tubes running on the top and bottom of it.

-The end of the barrel looks to be three parts: A long candle holder, a bell, and that wire construct that you put around tomatoes to help them grow. I'm pretty sure I can acquire most of that.

So, do you see anything I've missed or do you recognize parts that I don't? I'm making my shopping list now so any help you can give would be appreciated.

Also, as a bonus: Steampunk Tev.

Ok, just so we're clear... you want to replicate the Weapon in the picture or would you run along with that concept to create a brand new weapon?

The copper tubing is just a pair of half, maybe 3/4 inch, Ts that are soldered together.

I'd need to see a closer view of the trigger mechanism to tell you what is in there.

If you can find a green lava lamp, that could work for the "power Pack". Or one of those cone shaped LED glow thingies.

You need a monocole.

Remove monocole for combat.

You need a monocole.

Remove monocole for combat. It has been discussed. The problem is, I don't actually know how to wear one. I think it involves squinting?

Ah i see!.. well, as an option to work upon check this out

http://www.dealextreme.com/productimages/sku_15934_1.jpg

You can find these Rubber band Wooden Guns online and maybe in some shops around, if you get stuck on parts something like that can give you a framework without breaking the theme

Check out the nearest second-hand store and look through their glassware. I have no idea what that power pack could be, but finding a colored glass teacup (w/o a handle), vase (cut off the end and use that, although a longer vase might actually be interesting) or candleholder might serve the purpose well. I'm no expert at electronics so I couldn't begin to tell you how to make it actually glow. My only non-electronic guess would be buy a little party glowstick you could toss inside before the event, if you left a way to open and close the power pack.

That seems like a pretty good idea actually. Thanks. I can use the stock from that and build from there I think.

EDIT: Also thank you Mauve.

For eletronic Glow there is a TON of Led based toys and decorations you can pick up online and strip or adapt the components. I recall these small plastic globes that would change between 7 colors in a cycle... it's just a small circuit with opaque plastic. All stuff you can use and get for under $1

You can also slice open a couple of glow sticks and drain them into a bottle or something else, which is actually kind of what it looks like they did there.

Alternatively, you could just wire in a normal light inside of some thick green glass.

Uh!! There is the glowing water trick

That looks cool but I'm really trying to limit the amount of liquids involved in this project to.....almost none.

Really, the glowy-green thing in the picture looks more like solid molded plastic than anything you could put a glowing liquid in.

For anyone looking for more pictures of that gun, the picture in the opening post is from a set of pictures featuring a model called Kato.

She's a fantastic model and she's a professional steampunk seamstress, btw. However she didn't make the gun, she merely posed with it.

(And she's hot as fuck.)

EDIT: Do you happen to have more of that set because that's all I got. I found her on a modeling site but that set isn't in her list. I'd link it but......yeah. >_>

Her site is thisiskato.com, but it doesn't appear to be there, or her myspace, now that I look.

Sorry, can't help you out. Try googling kato steampunk gun or something similar.

Suggestion for a steampunky sidearm: Contact these guys. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/32482342@N05/4837135112/sizes/l/)

EDIT: Actually, I thought it was a pistol. It turns out to be a rifle. REGARDLESS.

That looks like it's made of molded plastic. I'm actually going sidearmless at the moment because my best option currently is a refurbished Nerf Maverick (http://sites.google.com/site/steampunkfembot/Home/weapons/Nerf-Maverick-Conversion-by-SteampunkFembot). It seems to be the Colt Pistol of Steampunk that everyone and their mother has. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to fall for this trend or make my own. I really need to make my main weapon first. Going shopping for parts tomorrow.

That's probably because it's made entirely of LEGO.
But y'know.

I just tried to fit in this thread. :(

Oh....I totally didn't notice that. That's actually pretty cool. Still not something I'd want to carry around though. Thanks anyway.

Funny story, I'm making a steampunk sparring outfit.
It's going to be a mix of function, casualwear (to blend in) and arabian/indian steampunk.

The idea is that I'm somewhat of a desert airship pilot of sorts so it will be mostly weathered cloth and metals. My armorer friend is weaving armor bits underneath so it will be functional armor, chainmail, leather, cloth and janglies.

When I first saw the thread title, my first thought was "Oh shit, Tevosaur has a gun. Whelp, guess I'm not going to any of the NPF member conventions."

That said, as far as glowy stuffs... short of having a concealed battery pack somewhere on the weapon and using electricity to power the light... I got nothing.

Have you looked around instructables.com much, Tev? Forgive me if you've already answered this before . That site has a variety of steampunk weaponry how-to's, including a small sidearm made from a super soaker and metallic paint.

Tev

Yeah, I broke down and picked up a Nerf Maverick off a Walmart gift card I had laying around. There's only a million and a half instruction sites online for how to paint it up to become a decent sidearm.

I kinda wanted to shy away from painted Nerf and water guns as much as possible just because I love looking at various guns people make out of junk. I picked up the Maverick out of desperation because I'm going to have my hands full on the rifle this year and my Steampunk persona seems like the kind of guy who would be okay with having a more trusty after-market Peacemaker-esque sidearm to compliment his larger gun.

But yeah, making your own weapons out of junk just seems to strike me as more authentic.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/Loneglade/Archon%202009/Picture011.jpg?t=1280807505

Just the fact that it's basically a door nob and two candle holders fused together was what drew me to it.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm elitist against painted guns or anything. I just find junk-build trinkets more interesting.

I'm still working on the gun. But I figured I'd use this thread to dump some pictures from a recent photoshoot some friends and I did a week or so ago.
