So I've been struck by insomnia. Or not. Point is, I haven't had more than two hours of sleep for the past three days. I've tried the ususal sleeping aids and the like, no caffine after six and whatnot, but it's having no effect. Figured I'd ask here: What do you do you get to sleep?

I usually drink two cups of coffee about an hour before bed; if that's not available, I'll drink a red bull. It puts me right out.

What are you telling this poor man, Nikose?
Is this like the thing I used to do in computer help threads with magnets but applied to insomnia?

Honestly, I've been drinking so much caffiene for so long that I'm actually shaky and unable to sleep until I drink a cup of coffee or have a coke or two.
However in this case yeah magnets on your monitor.
Edit: Damn, this is the first time I've been unable to rep you because I repped you too recently. >.> Stop saying shit I agree with.

What's the temperature like in your room? Do you have any ceiling/box fans to help circulate air and keep it cooler? I know for me I always have a hard time sleeping when it gets too hot, like this time of year when the ac in my apartment isn't working.
Stop trying to fall asleep, just let it happen. On average, it takes about twenty minutes to fall asleep. Try attending only to your breathing. You probably won't fall asleep while doing that, but afterwards it should be easier to fall asleep.
I've heard it recommended to tense and then relax your muscles in groups. Start with your feet and work your way up. Tense your muscles for about 5-10 seconds and then relax.
Is anything bothering you? Has something new or unexpected happened? Something expected, but dreaded? Again for me, I have a really hard time getting much sleep when I know I have to be at work at 5 or 6am the next day.
What's your sleep schedule like? Do you have a regular bedtime/ wake time during the week and change it for the weekends? This is generally a bad idea as you're resetting your circadian rhythm not once, but twice (Friday and Sunday) in a short period of time, which can lead to low quality sleep more than insomnia, but still.

Have a wank.
I'm quite stressed which makes sleeping a hassle sometimes so a bottle of a cider tends to help.
Passion fruit juice is a decent non-alcoholic substitute.

Well if I really can't get to sleep, I just take a hot shower & I'm able to get right back to bed. Really helps when I'm trying to sleep in the wrong time zone.
And it couldn't hurt if you start putting ear plugs in to tune out as much noise as possible. They don't cancel noise entirely, so your alarm should still be able to wake you, but a car just passing by shouldn't.

It's actually really cool in there, comfortable. I'll try out the suggestions, except Nikose's, 'cause you know. Many thanks for the help, and I'll post again after tonight and tell how it went!
Life's going really well right now, actually, so it's not stress.

Warm milk with honey. Most people know about warm milk, but honey is a natural sedative and should help.

Drink some gummi bears in warm skim milk and sing a song about bran muffins (don't forget the chainsaw solo!).

Insomnia is an ailment, ailments are best treated at their sources rather than intercepted later-- at least that's ideal.
What do I notice causing insomnia in myself? Usually an imbalance of introverted/extroverted mindstate... sometimes I am around people all day every day and then later escape into introversion when I come home, and since I regenerate in that state I feel that staying awake is better than sleeping.
Another side is having too much introversion which gets you locked into staying awake, like a zombie.
What's the best cure? Harmonize your personal social dynamic, find a GF you really gel with, hang out with healthy friends for a responsible amount of time, go out and get tired, do stuff, don't get bored. Get tired, satisfied about your day and look forward to the next.

That's an incredibly bad combination, you know. With the heroin in his system, he might fap too hard, and it's hard to sleep with sore bits.

Or, I dunno, read 'Catcher In the Rye'. Or maybe something by Charles 'snore-fest' Dickens.

Turn off all the electronics in the room. All of them. Computer. Off. Television. Off. Radio. Off.
If you have a fan put it near your bed, about 3-5 feet away from your bed. Turn it on a setting that won't make you uncomfortable, and listen to the white noise. A TV used to work for this, but since the switch to Digital there isn't anymore snow :(
Turn off the lights, but avoid complete darkness. Nightlights aren't just for 5 year olds.
Don't partake of any stimulants (Cigarettes too.) 2 hours before you go to bed, even if you do get to sleep it makes you easier to wake up.
Turn your clock around where you can't see the time. If you see the time, you might obsess over it and this causes your brain to go into overtime.
Clean your room and make sure you don't wait until the last minute to do a project, for pretty much to same reason as above.
That's all I got. Most of that stuff has worked for me. (Says the guy posting at 5 am)

The fan and milk-honey worked great, thanks. Slept for nine hours or so, and I needed it, so many thanks!

The Fan bit works for me too. However it only works if i feel the air. Otherwise I can't sleep without something blowing on me

Make working out a daily event. And I don't mean "Oh hey I went for a 15 minute jog and I kinda' worked up a sweat." I mean, "Oh my god, my fucking arms are on fire."
Also worth in, your body temperature drops when you sleep, hence why we use blankets. I often lay on top of my covers for a while to cool down, and I find that it helps me drift off. You need to crawl back under the blanket, but by that point you're probably around half asleep anyways.

That works if you're coordinated enough while half asleep to do so. I'm not. XD
It's true, though. I hate it when my family sets the A/C too low, because my room is the smallest in the house and always 1-2 degrees F warmer or cooler depending on if we're heating or cooling. When it gets down to 68F, I'm nigh-incapable of waking up because I'm a skinny little guy and it's enough to keep my metabolism low enough to keep me under. You'd think my mom, a nurse, would understand this, but apparently not. Hell, I think if I was underwater, 68F would be low enough to be fatal.

That's going in my soon to be published book "If you don't know how to do this, how are you alive!? By the way, here's how to do that"
We're still working on the title.
