View Full Version : Planning cosplay event for next year

So myself, a friend, and his girlfriend were having dinner last night and were discussing what to cosplay as to next year's Connecticon. After deciding on a few costumes, we were about ready to disperse for the night when we had a crazy idea. My friend's girlfriend has ins with the staff at Connecticon and since zero panels have been reserved yet, we thought up our own event.

Nerf Modern Warfare
-All players show up in tactical gear
-All players must be armed with only Nerf weaponry
-Gametype not decided on yet
-Killstreaks would possibly be counted
-Killstreak bonuses are already a definite
-Styrofoam crates painted to resemble care packages and ammo, would be thrown from upper level of event hall
-Fake flares to call for care packages
-Barebones Toughbook for predator strikes, foam predator missiles
-Foam planes attached to long sticks for Harrier strikes, nerf darts loaded into bag on bottom which could be dumped by using a rope
-Foam planes thrown over the battlefield to represent airstrikes
-Airsoft claymore mines loaded with foam pellets

We have more ideas but I think you get the gist. His girlfriend and I would be staff members, carrying out the killstreak bonuses and manning the cameras which would be streamed into either a viewing room or central server and streamed throughout the convention. We would also have volunteers acting as both security and calling the players out who were hit with darts. Players would walk back to a "spawn point" and respawn after a few seconds.

I know this seems a little over our heads, but as of right now we have a few members of the convention center, 17 volunteers, and an entire airsoft team interested.

The only problem we're facing (which isn't really that big a deal) are the rules for the match. I'm thinking capture the flag, but we would have to work out the fine details. How many flags? How many captures? How would killstreak bonuses be awarded during the confusion? We have fake flares that are safe to use indoors made from streamers and small fans, and if they let us use the same hall used for the raves, we would have access to the sound system to feed war sounds and killstreak alerts into.

This is way way in advance, but we really want this to be as smooth and fun as possible. Anything you guys can think to add? Any rules or gametype changes? We would be sure to have enough security that no one would be injured. I know events like this are carried out all the time, but I want this one to be unique.

One random player should get two special event nerf guns, we'll call them... 7881's... And if he fires these weapons at all he gets kills, hit or miss.

Then you guys issue a patch halfway through your event, but only after most of the people have quit in frustration.

P.S. Cool idea.

Edit: Not sure how Killstreaks would be handled again? One or two people "handle" them? But how would you actually use a harrier thingy and make it anything like Modern Warfare?

Oh, you definitely need to make some riot shields, and make them Nerf-immune.

The only way I can think to do harrier strikes is to do what I posted, attach a plane to a long pole that could rise over the battlefield at full length, attach a bag with darts to the bottom, and use a rope to release the darts over the enemy.

Killstreaks could always be players on the opposing team with a good angle on the enemy side. Say, people on a team that are sitting out, or dead. If a team scores a killstreak, the...we'll call them "killstreakers," get to use whatever the team earned.

It's a little more complicated and team-based than the actual game, but it seems a little hard to keep it individual like the actual game too.

Like if someone got chopper gunner, you could have some Nerf gatling gun rigged on a raised platform and the lucky killstreaker just gets to fill the arena with Nerf.

Why not come to AE?

A few ideas:

Riot shields - All front assaults are immune. Back attacks are fair game, depending on size of shield.

Location damage - Arm disabled for shooting back, two of any appendage = dead. Chest and head are automatic kills.

Capture the Flag - Rules are simple. Think paintball

Citizen One - Escort mission. You can either arm the citizen, have them a rogue, a double agent, OR have them defenseless. Always fun if there's a chance your rescuee is a spy.

More can come later. Sleep now.

The general rule is that dead rise as zombies.

Oh, shi-

If this happens, I may need to buy a ticket to Connecticon. :(
This sounds too cool to not join in on.

If we get a lot of participants, this might be a tad difficult to keep track of. I'd say for location damage we go by the honor rule, or have no location damage at all for a few reasons. One being that most Nerf guns require you to use two hands, one to pull the piston back and one to fire, and two, I'd rather not risk injury by having people hop on one foot during all of this.

Friend came up with a few more ideas. First, the map...

http://www.modbase.be/images/cod4/maps/multiplayer/tactical_maps/cod4_tactical_map_shipment.jpg

Shipment from Modern Warfare one. This scenario will be conquest-based with referees using stopwatches to track captures. Refs will hold up flags of the color of the team holding the point and "ticket points" will start to be accumulated after one team holds the majority of the capture points.

We also came up with a few more procedural rules. Teams will be decided in a panel room beforehand by having blue and red teams line up against opposite walls. After they are evened out, players will have colored numbers taped to their backs to make it easier for refs to call out kills. We might also suggest to the players that they buy some billiard chalk and chalk up the tips of their darts so hits could be more easily identified.

I'd prefer to get the event as close to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVKnF26qFFM) as possible.

You trying to blow up the ground with those bomb plants? What if the plants were inside buildings? Whelp, now that my two cents are spent...

Didn't notice the bomb plant locations. We're converting it into a conquest map.

Maybe get some "larp" weapons to use as hand-to-hand?

Oh man, rubber lined jian offhand with a pistol? I'd so come to that.

While suitably awesome, I'm thinking the players'd be restricted to tactical knives. ;)
Considering the whole "dress up in tactical gear" part in the opening post.

This, this especially.

Some short knives work well or even a longsword that you MUST demand a charge against the other team. All while the sword allows you to block one or two hits that come to you as you charge.
