View Full Version : So my grandma has 116 felony convictions.

It all started when my mother called me up. She saw this iPhone app called "Date Check" on TV where, if you put in a person's phone number, you get their age, address, and criminal record. Anyway, she decided to download it and start playing with other people's numbers. At some point, she tried my grandma's phone number. Correct name and correct address came up. It also says she has 116 felony convictions. Now, as far as I know, grandma (the mother of my mother) has not served any jail time at any point in my life or my mom's life. So either this app is completely off the ball, or my grandmother is the most magnificent bastard of all time.
As an aside, my mom also has a couple clients who have served jail time in the past. They don't show any criminal history on "Date Check."
So, yeah. Discuss "Date Check" and how it will tear our society apart.

[Hijack] Speaking of random personal info searches, which I search for myself, I think I turn up dead on this one site. My father's dead and we have the same name. The listing is my birthdate and full name, his death date. Wires crossed there?
Been wondering about that for a while. Sadly it's the kind of place where you have to pay for full info. Don't even remember the specific site.

On the original topic: I'm wary of these kinds of applications. First off on an ethical level, but also on an accuracy level. Simply put, if anyone had 116 felony convictions, they'd never see the light of day again.
In other words, if it was at all true, I'd hazard to say it violated privacy rights, but as it is, it's just bullshit.

Talk me up to speed here.
A felony is a big thing, yeah? Like robbery? Or does it also include small stuff, like forgetting to pay speeding tickets? Or ever getting speeding tickets.
'Cause I could sooner see a sweet old granny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQMqgSaZZmM) ending up with 116 felonies for speeding (or forgetting to pay the corresponding tickets on time), and never ever being sent to jail.

Felonys are big crimes, yeah. Misdimeanors are the small things.

Yeah, felony's major stuff. If she had 116 felonies she would be a serial killer/robber/arsonist/rapist or some combination of those.

More like she'd have had to have been all of those at the same time and not gotten caught for years.

Not to mention all the Tax evading you'd be doing as you ran from the law.

Really we should be more worried about that other new app that allows you to find the exact location of any of your friends phones at any time. Fortunately my phone is suitable low tech enough to avoid this kind of creepy stalker detection.

Well to be fair she could just be a master thief/drug dealer/druggie.
All big crimes are felonies, but not all felonies are necessarily big crimes. Theft/Vandalism over a certain dollar amount count as felonies (but it varies from state to state what that amount is), and the line between simple assault and aggravated assault isn't particularly perfectly clear, depending on the jurisdiction (the latter involves intent to kill, maim, or rape, or having a deadly weapon--the murky part is proving the intent to kill/maim). So a brawl that got out of hand could also count as a felony.
Plus the previously mentioned drug charges all being felonies.
So, there's that.

The NPF System?
This app sounds like bantha poo to me. If your grandma had 116 felonies...she might as well be a Supervillian.

Well, it's a system that's called "I just made this shit up, because I thought it'd be funny".
I co-created it, and am now beta testing. Look for it next year, it'll be next big thing! =D

You say that about everything you thought would be funny, but when push comes to shove you never deliver.

Well, maybe that's because anything other than dick-jokes 'round here immediately gets over-analysed and Y'ALL ARE JUST MEAN MEAN POOPIE-HEADS!

It occurs to me that y'know, Phone numbers, they aren't like a social security number. They change, and they don't remain with you over time, the phone number you had in your 20's probably isn't the same one you had in your 60's, unless you kept the same service and house forever.
So it's likely your grandma has had a phone number change since some time before, and now has the phone number of a previous owner whom these felonies are attributed to. Or worse, the phone number of multiple previous owners whom these felonies are attributed to.
Also, if I could get paid for leveling up in any area of my life, I would have much more initiative to level up in something. Shit, I'd be the master of lockpicking, bike riding, Math, Reading, healing, and whatnot and be rich.
Though there would probably be diminishing returns as time went on, as I'd stop being able to level up as much the higher in skill I went. Maybe they should balance that, so when I'm able to cure cancer after applying bandages to myself or others a kajillion times, I'll get suitably rewarded....oh, wait a second. Never mind. Now I feel like those whiny fanboys who complain about system choices they think are broken but really aren't.
I'm curious to test out my phone number on magical felony detecting device, but then I'd have to give you or your mom my phone number, and that would be uncomfortable.

That sounds more reasonable a reason for having 116 Felonies. Guess no Supervillian Grandmas...

Wait actually that's pretty useful for finding your lost or stolen phone, or a friend that's gone missing.
It's just one of the many nice things our society is never allowed to have ever.

If you have a new enough phone that it has the E911 GPS, you should be able to set it to E911 only on your software, meaning that only emergency dispatchers can locate you.
If you don't, you probably don't have GPS at all.
But I'm not sure if this new app accesses the E911 system or uses cell tower triangulation. If it's the latter it doesn't really matter how old your phone is.
Date Check is both stupid and skeezy, though. And there's no real way to protect your privacy vs Date Check, either, unless you take yourself fully off the grid. Which itself wouldn't be (much of) a problem, except it's apparently inaccurate.
