View Full Version : I feel amazingly old and you should too

So, I'm at work, it's my last day, and there's not a lot to do. I sign onto NPF, twiddle around, laugh at the outrageous things that are thrown about and then click on my User CP. Scrolling down, I come across events for which I was rep'd. The earliest one comes from December 2003. "Wow," ponders my alluring baritone voice within my mind, "That was a long time ago. I was practically..."

It hits me. I was 13 when that happened. That was back when I played SOCOM and decided to make the Kill-Team RP. Long-time veterans will remember that I tried, unsuccessfully, to run a special-ops style RP a couple times. The running joke was that in the RP forum there were four constants. 1) Raiden would be running a Soldiers of Light every week, 2) Cyber Wars just wouldn't end dammit, 3) SS would be trying to run Kill Team and 4) Raiden's character would hit on CJ's character. So I start thinking about how I got onto this forum and...

I joined after TopWebComics melted down. Honestly, I can't even remember how I learned about the switch. At that time, I had probably been on TopWeb for about a year, so I signed up in either 2001 or 2002. To put that in context, I was either 11 or 12. I am now 20 years old, about to turn 21. When I joined I think I was in the seventh grade, I am now entering my fourth year of university. When I joined I had just got a PS2 and thought it was the greatest thing to ever grace the face of the earth, and my biggest concern was the fact that I was having funny feelings for a girl and that I had a couple of hairs on my upper lip. I now have a job, and drive to classes, and live with roommates and all that.

I have spent almost half my life as a member of this forum.

I feel old.

You should to. Y'all have basically been random bystanders watching me "grow up"

Seriously, this forum has been set up for seven years about? This is ancient in internet terms. We can officially be senile and get away with it.

Man, I was 12 when I joined this forum in TWC days, I've been with you through middle school, high school and college. Insane.

Yeah, I joined not too long after the move to TWC... and lurked around the EZ Boards before offically joining

And also, NO one has ever heard from Gieco at all, in all this time, huh?

I lurked since the beginning. I only made an account recently cause I was bored and had no other forum so I joined up this one. But man, freakin young whippersnappers!

I recently got an e-mail from some German forum I used to be a pretty active member of. They congratulated me on my 10 year membership. I was 13 then. I haven't visited this place in years because I outgrew the average age and IQ* of that Forum rather quickly. And they also sold out! Totally. I emigrated to Last.fm circa 2006, which had some great forums at the time. But all the cool people have been banned or left. I've been occasionally lurking NPF since... ever? Until I decided to register an account in 2008, and probably another one I forgot about earlier.

This is a good deal of the story of my forum journey through the Internet.

But yeah, I've been feeling old ever since I turned 21, which I officially** declared the age when the average human being begins to die**.

*Like a high number makes me smarter than you, by some alien logic. I just didn't want to say the members were pretty dumb. So I implied I was more intelligent. I mean: Ooops.

** Yeah, right.

Aw hell, Jesus is back, someone get CJ in here with bannination powers!

I forget which board I had joined briefly before this one, but it was blue and the member's sigs were about 6 inches in height and full of animated gifs. It hurts my eyes to remember it.

I forget how old I was when I joined the current forums, I think I was 19 or 20.

I only ever ventured into the RP forum briefly, we had Calvinball in off topic back then

Edit: Wow I forget a lot, someone's going to have to open a nursing home forum on these boards to make sure I don't forget my pants before I post or something.

Also Ah, SS, I think you were the very first person I remember interacting with on these forums (well, back on thetopwebcomics forum), my older brother had joined the rpers and I thought it looked like fun so I decided to join in too. AND I NEVER LEFT.

Dear Darth SS:

In 2003, I was graduating from highschool and turning 18. Last weekend I talked with the daughter of one my mom's friends who is going into Grade 10 this year and wanted some advice from me. I have known this girl since she was in grade 1. You are not old. I am old. Krogo is old and Jesus is hella old!

I didn't even join this forum until like my second year of college and I still only missed the message board transition by mere months. I'm starting grad school on Monday and had a seminar today about how to deal with toxic waste and general lab safety which was an "Oh my god this is almost like a Job" moment. Despite the fact that I'm only 26 I've had a receding hairline and the odd gray hair (it's starting to get uncomfortably close to the salt and pepper stage) for at least a year. Not only am I old I'm also apparently aging rapidly.

The SNES and the N64 don't feel that old to me. I remember wanting and getting both for Christmas (well I have a lot of siblings and we were all together back then so they where more for the whole family) when they both came out respectively.

Starcraft came out 12 years ago. Fuuuuuuck.

Kids in Grade 4 weren't alive when 9/11 happened. Kids in high school never watched Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

It has been 12 years since Starcraft, more since Warcraft, WoW is almost seven years old, and Halo is almost 10 years old.

Senior year of high school when that happened. Found out what was going on when I walked into my English class and said "Oh cool, we're watching a movie!" when I glanced at the TV.

And of course.....Married With Children!!!! Fuck, the theme song is stuck in my head now.

Man I distinctly remember when fifth wasn't even a mod.

Well, the first time he wasn't a mod anyway. I left for a while and I came back and was like "who the fuck made this guy a mod"

I was told there are people just barely younger than me who never saw a rotary phone.

Kids these days have no idea how to work a command prompt. They also have no idea what BBS means, much less what it is. I don't think most of them have ever heard of shareware, either.

I remember as a kid, 256-color graphics were top-of-the-line. I played them alongside EGA games. Roland made the best sound cards for music, but everything else sounded funny because of it.

My childhood was marked by the first CD technology in computers. We bought Lands of Lore twice because of it.

The first computer my family ever owned, which I of course played at every opportunity, was one of those with 5 1/2 inch drives, no internal harddisk storage, and a monotone screen. We did get a Windows 3.1 machine eventually and by then I was old enough to fool around in DOS and I even installed an parallel port card in the thing as well as setting up a switch to share the printer when we eventually got another one which instantly became mine.

I probably spent several weeks of my life all told playing that thing! I can remember launching games seemed like having to put in a secret password, and it wasn't until I was a bit older, when my dad showed me how to just look up the EXE file on the disk, that I figured things out. We didn't have another type of computer until 1996... it was quite the leap. :P

Ah yes, the awesomeness that was my one moment of greatness on these forums, Cyber Wars, the two year RP that just wouldn't quit and actually ended.

I joined way back on EZBoards and then migrated to TopWeb and subsequently here in 2003 and I was entering my first year of College.

I always feel old when I'm paired with some 19 or 20 year old EMT who barely got certified this year. We have cert numbers and they're already in the 390,000s for the current EMTs. I'm in the 320,000s, it scares me sometimes that I've been an EMT for 6 years. They've changed the CPR protocols twice since I've started and back in the day we couldn't give ipecac or charcoal without consulting medical control. Nowadays they're thinking about letting us administer nasal narcan and teaching all EMTs to read EKGs. Amazing.

I was older than I thought I was when I started. Given I was on TWC for a bit, but I don't remember how long. Though I doubt it was over a year.

What always make me feel older is media. That Red vs Blue is actually 5 years old, that I'm enjoying playing Tactics Ogre now that I first played in what I assume is middle school, Lost actually started in 2004. Just realizing that there are children grown after things I have been enjoying for years came out.
