View Full Version : There's an app for that
TIME BOMB

So after ruining my phone by dropping it in a glass or rum (it's still drunk) and then dropping my backup phone on the pavement while skateboarding I have inherited my girl friends old iPhone. I always told myself I wouldn't ever get a smart phone but now I'm stuck with one and I plan to make the best use of it I can. So my question to all you tech savvy people out there is: what apps should I get?

Jailbreak it.
Then get whichever app you want.

Somethign that makes fart noises.
It would also have to argue, drunkingly, with everything you say. Followed by complaining about everything.

The majority of smartphone apps [that aren't games] are to show people who don't have one what they can't do. You never actually use them.

I have a Logitech Touchmouse app, which lets me use my Iphone as a wireless trackpad, complete with a keyboard, so I can control powerpoint presentations, turn on programs from afar, and all sorts of long distance mouse stuff. Similarly, you can save certain webpages as "apps" so I have Media Player Classic's webserver page so I can control and play media with my iphone as a remote.
Skype or Truphone is good when you have internet, but no phone reception.
Alarm Clock comes in free and paid flavors, and lets you use your iphone as an LED alarm clock that can play typical alarm sounds, and songs from your phone.
Dropbox lets you access stuff from your dropbox folder/account from your iphone. Perfect for when you want to listen to something or open something on the go, yet don't want to take the time to mess around with Itunes. I even save any phone numbers or webpage addresses I want to a text file in my dropbox folder, than I can then open up on my phone for quick access.
Stanza for Ebook reader, with a big catalog library for free and paid books and easy importing of ebooks from any format.
Documents 2: for editing, opening, and saving word, spreadsheet, and pdf documents. Can connect to google docs, and open what's in your dropbox.
Pandora radio: oh yeaaah.
Tunemark Radio: Free full featured online radio app, that can open and use any kind of online radio station, including Final Fantasy Radio. Can play music in the background (even if you don't have the new 4G) and also has a clock radio function.
Sound Amp: I use this cuz I'm deaf, but it's a hearing aid app. You plug in your headphones, adjust the settings, and use the iphone's microphone to listen to things both far away and nearby with better volume.
Smule Ocarina: Full featured instrument on the go!
Facebook: It is the evil sin, but actually lets my friends without cell phones contact me anywhere.
Craigsphone: Craigslist for the iphone
Fandango: Times and Tickets on the go.
Games:
rRootage: it's free, it's awesome, it's Kenta Cho.
iNethack: same deal.
Sharpshooter: May not be free anymore, but good silent scope clone.
Metal Gear Solid Touch: MGS: The shooting Gallery.
Ace Attorney: The entire DS game, on Iphone.
Sure, you may not use all of them every day of the week, but each of these apps will be useful at one point. These are all for a non-jailbroken Iphone, but if you jailbreak yours, shit man. You can do anything! Except fly. Maybe.

I'm just puzzled at why you made the same typo both times.
I was pretty apathetic about the whole smartphone thing until I started trying to lose weight and realized it would be nice keep track of things without having to drag around a bunch of materials anytime I leave the house and food might happen. But you probably don't care about that, so I don't know.

I know! I was in disbelief myself, truly. Of course, they primarily use the college computers for all their internets, so they can have facebook and not a phone of any sort.

(Scarily, I know for a fact that at least some of those are real.)
