View Full Version : How Jokes Die

I just realized that 'your mom' jokes dying shall be two-fold.

Firstly, as the jokes get older, they fall more and more out of style.

And secondly, as I grow older, it becomes more likely that the person I am talking to (assuming I converse mainly with people fairly close to my age) has a dead mother and that the joke just becomes uncomfortable for everyone.*

This saddens me.

*These people are such goddamn whiners. WAAAAAH my mom is dead and it clearly wasn't recently and you had absolutely no way of knowing that YOU'RE SUCH A JERK FOR MAKING THE ASSUMPTION THAT I, LIKE THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE OF MY AGE GROUP, HAVE A LIVING MOTHER

The correct response to a dead mother in such a situation is, and always has been, "Well, I guess that explains why she didn't move much last night."

What are you talking about? Your mom jokes had their exhaustion phase in like 1990, they've been an undead joke since. And the undead have no Constitution score, so they can run forever. That's the best stage of a running joke, when they never ever stop.

Not entirely unlike your mom.

I prefer to say "Yes. I was there when she choked."

I didn't say that they would stop being funny, just that they would become less socially appropriate.

At the time when it is most useful, a good "your mom" joke fails to be remembered.

Dammit.

That is the joke.

And explaining the joke kills the joke.

This has been a very educational experience for us all.

Like an obvious line that goes here.

A vigorous joke can easily survive dissection. Explaining it will only reveal new layers of humor. I find it rather dull to treat jokes like something mysterious religious that's denied by evidence. But then I also find it dull to leave jokes for dead when you can make zombies of them.

"Like that'd stop me."
"She's cremated ya sick fuck."

For some reason I got the image of this coming from an unshaven, middle-aged British man circa 1800 wearing dirty clothes.

Fifthfiend is how jokes die. He finds them, cornered and alone in a dark alley, and then he beats them into submission, and rapes them to death.

Kind of like your mother.

After reading an extensive article on the subject, I must congratulate you on your indirect role in the detonation of my brain.

That has to be the most roundabout way anyone's ever said I drove them nuts. :S

Everybody needs a little hatred to be healthy, right? Either way, I approve of this as long as you two do your final battle Bro vs Dave style.
