Please fucking stop fucking. It's 1:00am. I have class at 8:30, and I need to wake up at 6:30 to catch a bus. Two hours of straight man on straight woman sex is all well and good, but your bed is so God'amn (Yes, Zaeed) squeaky that it is imparing my ability to sleep. I have told you before that it is loud. Hell, I told you fifteen minutes ago that it is loud. It's midterm week. I am advancing my life. You are living off of welfare. Both of you are living off of welfare. Shut. Up.
This thread is dedicated to loud room/housemates everywhere, or even just general lack-of-sleep and the preventitive measures one may take.

It seems as the semester goes on, the guys are going out more and staying up later. Although I can't say this really impacts me, since I'm used to staying up anyway.
As for sleep aids, I'll post what I tweeted at Rick.

I am now going to complain about general apartment life shenanigans. This post has grown rather large. It's not even all on the topic of annoying neighbors.
My current neighbors downstairs failed to replace the batteries in a smoke detector for a few days. I got to enjoy the steady beep every thirty seconds, as the detector in question is mounted on the living room ceilings of the units [and, thus, right under my floor], and the walls and such are not as thick as we'd all like.
It literally was driving me insane, no hyperbole intended. When UPS came to their door and I knew they were home -- having waited a few days in case they just had been at work or away for the weekend to not replace it, though I could have done it earlier* -- I knocked on their door to complain. I even had batteries. But they chose to come to the door and not answer it (this is one of the few pieces of explicit evidence in the growing number of instances wherein we are waging a cold war of hate that I don't think either of us intentionally takes part in). Within 10 minutes, though, I heard the chiming of a smoke detector sounding alarm as they do when you put in new batteries.
* They must have taken the batteries out the one day in the middle of this period, as I had a friend over and we didn't hear it all day. Why they did this but then put dying batteries back in I don't know. Or it could all be evidence of my growing lack of mental faculties.
Right now, the water heater is being noisy. In my unit/building, it's actually in what could pass as my attic. They did some recent plumbing (apparently the pressure coming in from the street line to our building was 20 units above what the pipes were rated for, so they added a valve to bring it back down), and for whatever reason, perhaps as a side effect of the pressure change, any time someone in the building uses hot water whatever it does is now accompanied by a loud gurgling-ish noise, or as I described it a noise that's like popcorn popping but much louder. I'm still waiting for maintenance to do something about this one.
A couple years back, a guy drove his car into my building, right under my bedroom into the first floor apartment's wall.
Last spring the Mennonite workers hired to replace the decks with newer ones (better material, etc.) dug into the gas line on the other side of my building. I woke up to fire trucks and ambulances outside. I used the restroom and heard what sounded like loud, running water. I then noticed a smell.
Upon grabbing my phone and keys and hurrying outside, I was yelled at from the street by two reps from my leasing office trying to get me away from the building ASAP. After they filled me in on what was going on, I was left wondering why no one bothered to wake me up and get me out of there? I think I made a thread about this.
Oh, these same workers later also cut through the power connection for the building and left us without power for half a day/night. Thankfully the folks from the power company were quick to respond and worked into the wee hours to make sure it was repaired and strengthened.
In my old building, the walls and floors and all that were much thicker. You'd probably have to blow a hole in the wall next door for me to hear it in my apartment. I also lived on the top floor and had only one neighbor, as my other side was adjacent to the floor's laundry room (which was actually really convenient for me) and access to the trash chute.
Well, one time someone dropped fire bombs into the dumpster below the chute. More than once. And the explosion was loud enough to get the attention of a lot of folks in the building -- at least a few called 911. Very quickly, the smoke from the fire in the dumpster went up the chute and began filling every hallway with smoke. I have cellphone video of some of that.
Another year in that same place, someone decided it would be grand to light all of the clothes in one of the dryers -- next door, remember -- on fire. I was at a party. At around 4:00 am I came back to see a worker sitting at my doorway doing something to my door. He looks up and says, "Hey, how's it going?" to which I reply, "Uhm, you tell me?" He let's me know what happens, and I take a look next door. The whole room is covered in soot/ash, the dryer is destroyed, and the window is gone -- the firemen blew it out with the hose dousing the room. Apparently as I was not home with a key they broke down my door to make sure the fire hadn't spread / no one was trapped inside. And to top that one off the repair man wasn't given the correct handle and lock to fix the door, so I had to wait another ~45 minutes with my door wide open for him to go get the right stuff. I just wanted to pass out.
That building's air conditioning unit, the main one for the whole building, blew out one summer. We were all without air -- and I realize that's not the end of the world what with fans and windows but sometimes at the top floor in the middle of the summer even fans fail to help -- for a week or so. I HATE sleeping when sweaty and hot.
One night the electrical box that branched the main power line on the street into that building exploded. Literally. I went out there at night when this happened and chatted with the electrician working on it, and he pointed to where he had found pieces on the sidewalk across the street. That was interesting.
The generator in the basement also went on the fritz one time and made a loud noise non-stop. I forget what the cause was of that one, but I know it took them a while to figure it out and fix it.
Then there were the guys that would have parties late at night -- which I didn't really hear ever if I was home, thanks to the thicker walls -- and then get into fights in the hallway, knocking on each others' doors and yelling and getting into scuffles, etc. I had moved in to the top floor when it was for graduate students and professionals only. After a couple years, the leasing company opened it to undergrads. At the end of that leasing period, my neighbor and myself, the only grads left in the building, both moved out.
In my current place, whenever the folks downstairs cook, I get to smell it all. This isn't in itself a bad thing, but they are international students from India or similar and cook with a lot of the spices and things common in food from that part of the world. I have never liked that smell (though some of the food is quite amazing).
I used to have neighbors on the other side of the building but same level as me that must have either had a lot of rowdy sex in their living room or been playing DDR a lot. The floorboards in my apartment seem to move when someone over there walks around [and vice versa I bet]. There were nights I'd be laying on my couch, watching television, when I'd be vibrating. Hmm. I did knock on the walls or try to make a similar racket on my side a couple times.
And yet I, overall, have enjoyed both of my apartments.

I have a bad feeling that my roommate and I are the rowdy neighbors. We (mostly I) are up and about--and occasionally run the laundry or dishwasher--at all crazy hours of the night, we have a 7.1 surround sound system that can get pretty loud if we forget to lower it when we play video games, we have people over quite a lot, and we don't really moderate our volume of speech, or take care to tread softly (we're on the top floor).
Thing is, we've never heard any sound from any of our neighbors, so it may be that the walls and floor are just nice and thick. And no one has ever come to complain / filed a noise complaint against us. Heck we've never even seen our downstairs neighbors in the six months we've lived here. But still, I can't help but wonder if the people downstairs don't just absolutely hate us.

I'd really love to, but I'm on the island and "Midterms week" means I need to study for last week, this week, and next week. Not much of a singular week, is it? I'll watch the video... And the news. Just to be safe.

NEW! Head-On Hammer! For all your insomnia problems! Head-On! Apply directly to the forehead!
Since it's insomnia, I assume it applies to my head? I think a better idea is to give it to my housemates and say it's a new form of sexy-toy, and that it works via swift applications to the forehead.
All of what Synk said.
I don't have it that bad in regards to equipment failures, but I'm kinda up there, considering I've only been renting this house with my friends for less than a year. The main concern is the landlady. The hot water tank broke (which was right beside my room, so I had to move into the living room for about a month) and it took a long time to get a fix organized. In the same amount of time, our washer and dryer went. It took a week EACH to fix the part. She even knew what was wrong with the dryer, and it took her a week or two to fix it. Oh, and our garage door has never actually worked right. She's known since day two, when we told her.
And yes, I enjoy -- overall -- living here. Housemates could be a bit quieter and cleaner, though.
Rick bein' noisy.
Yeah, I think we're the noisy neighbours, too. Well, to be specific, my housemates are. One of them sits a good... 2 meters away from his 50" TV and plays Call of Duty for hours, yelling whenever he gets killed, etc. Our sliding glass door is usually open (not so much anymore, but it was during the warmer months) and you can hear his yelling a good block away. He uses a lot of racial slurs. A LOT.

The magic of the product is that it can be applied to the forehead of whatever is the cause of your insomnia woes! It works on:
- Yourself!
- Roommates!
- Televisions!
- Radios!
- Alarm clocks!
- And more!
Head-On! Apply directly to the forehead! ;)

Do they use condoms? Find them. Spiking them with novocaine, icy-hot, or the juice of habanero peppers works well.

I would have guessed laxative but that might just multiply the problem. Or you could rub poison ivy on the their bedsheets, making sure that you get excellent sleep after the first night.

Excellent suggestions that I may consider if I get the desire to. One thing, though... Don't condoms tend to, y'know, come in wrappers? The needle would counter-act that, though, but they've already had one pregnancy scare...

Central Vancouver, right in the middle of the action, same street as a skytrain station, major bus terminal from north, west, east and south and single bus transfers from both horseshoe bay and tswassen.
Performance area is 25min bus or 15min skytrain fom my street +10 min walk (aprox)

North side of the lake here on Sundays at dusk (7:30pm-later), Vancouver Burns facebook group for more info.
Still, it would be an hour bus, half hour wait, 1.5 hour ferry and an hour bus both ways so it's not like you won't have time to study, heh.
I'd suggest coming over if you got pals or family here, you could pull off a day trip but you'd be getting back pretty late.

Very thin needles make very tiny holes in the wrappers if you're not terribly skilled... all you need to do is get through the wrapper and inject. I'd use insulin needles... if I ever did that sort of thing. >.>
But if they get the foil-wrapped kind, even better! Those can actually be injected from the seals on the side. Besides, when using the novocaine, I doubt very seriously that pregnancy could happen... kinda hard to maintain arousal when everything goes numb.

Our apartment walls are pretty thick towards the outside. My sister and I live on the "1st" (really 2nd) floor and have a terrace which faces the train. Do we ever hear the train? Not really, in fact I only noticed it once a friend of mine mentioned it to me.
I do however, dislike our neighbors. We have an older couple living directly next door who are very nice, but despite the "no pets other than fishes and indoor cats" policy, have a yappy dog that barks a lot. Also, there is one lady who hogs the laundry room. I have to lug all my laundry to the ground floor and across the building to the one laundry room only to find her using almost all of the machines to wash not that much clothing. She separates them into colors, like all whites in one machine and blue in the other, green in another. When I finally manage to get two machines (I do my and my sisters' laundry) she like to stick her head in my machine to see what I'm washing. I finally asked her what was so interesting about my laundry.
Lady: "Well you have a lot of male like clothes..."
Me: "I'm a paramedic, the pants are unisex. Would you like to see the blood stains from my last trauma?"
Lady: "..."**
Last but not least there is a family of I think Indian or Pakistani people who live a few doors down. Clearly they have a huge amount of dysfunction since they are ALWAYS yelling at each other. I go to throw my garbage out at 10pm, they're yelling. I come back from work at 6am, they're yelling. It permeates through the whole floor.
**True story. She still likes to be nosy and look at my clothes but I just give her a dirty look and be sure to put the underwear crotch side up for her.
