View Full Version : So My Astrological Sign Changed To Ophiuchus - What The Crap Is That?!

So you may have heard that the stars have shifted (http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/100950/20110114/new-zodiac-sign-ophiuchus-may-change-the-future-of-astrologers-too.htm) and there's a new astrological sign in town. What does that mean? Well, if you don't care about your horroscope, not a thing, I think. But to those who opened the paper to, say, Sagitarius every once in a while, you're now going 'What the crap?'

Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18- May 13
Taurus: May 13- June 21
Gemini: June 21- July 20
Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 20

Yeah, so not really the biggest problem in the world right now. They're adapting the system to the format of the current stars and have added something new, which has other people gettin' steamed, the people who liked it just the way it was. I was a Sagittarius (http://www.exploreastrology.co.uk/PersonalityTraitsSagittarius.html), now I'm an Osiuchus. (http://blog.zap2it.com/pop2it/2011/01/new-zodiac-sign-ophiuchus-doesnt-mean-much-for-horoscope-followers-or-astrologers---dont-panic.html) Which is wrong. I'm a sagittarius.

Well, thats how a retcon works. They can't just say its new or it'll destroy continuity. They admit it was there all along, but we never payed attention to it for one reason or another. Kind of like the pope never really mentioned Buddha till now, but he was really there all along, doing his sit-under-a-tree-Nirvana thing that he does.

EDIT: Looking into a bit more, this astrology stuff is complete bullshit. Some website said Im going to do something new and exciting tomorrow. In other news, as most of my family, immediate and extended, has birthdays later in the year, it meant that most of us were Capricorns and Sag's. Something silly we all had in common. Now science has gone and screwed that up.

"Astrology is geocentric. It relates life on Earth to the Earth’s environment, and seasons are the most dramatic effect, which is why we use the tropical zodiac," he said.

Welp, that dude is an idiot. "Astrology, a practice which started as a way to tell fortune by stars and other heavenly bodies interacting, is based on 12 primary constellations, and has the roots for 'constellation/star' and 'study', and comes from the latin word for Astronomy, is COMPLETELY GEOCENTRIC".

Then again, can't expect anything more from a guy who calls himself an astrologer and works for Tarot.Com. Especially considering he's just covering his ass/paycheck.

A few people here actually seem upset about this or some shit, though?

I mean, really?

This just in: Zodiac not real. Doesn't actually affect life, personality, or fortune. Bunch of superstitious nonsense invented by people who didn't know the difference between a burning ball of hydrogen and God. Story at 11.

Edit@Smarty: To be fair, we very briefly covered astrology in my astronomy classes, but only vis a vis the history of it and as a way to make sun charts more interesting/memorable. I remember my astronomy teacher was against mentioning anything about the precession of the Earth throwing off the Sidereal Zodiac because it was a bunch of nonsense and didn't need any publicity.

I think that there's a little bit of science behind the zodiac signs - the day before yesterday, when I was a Sagittarius, it was defined as friendly, optimitic and family oriented. Being born in December, I had Christmas in there as well - my family usually coming for that if not both. And what better to be optimistic about if not presents and family?

Hey, I'm not saying it's good science.

What I don't get is this: We've been going by arbitrary lines to decide who's what, which have no scientific basis at all. They were apparently also set to have twelve signs back a long time ago. How can you say, "Well, scientifically, your arbitrary lines are wrong", when they're arbitrary lines that people like to follow, which actually mean nothing?

I mean, it seems like this scientist dude is just all, "LOOK EVERYONE HOW SMART ME IS AREN'T YOU PROUD AND IMPRESSED HOW SMART I AM RUINING ALL YOUR STUFF?", by pointing out things which have long since been abandoned by the people who care about astrology, and saying that suddenly now they have meaning.

I mean, if the Oepehatigjagariga was dropped way back when, why do we suddenly want to bring it back? If you DO believe in astrology, you'd also believe that the dudes who dropped it did so for a reason.

It's like going, "HEY, SCIENCE DUDE. THE EARTH WAS BELIEVED TO BE THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE A FEW HUNDRED YEARS AGO, SO YOU'RE WRONG ABOUT ALL THAT. AREN'T I CLEVER FOR REALIZING THESE THINGS THAT YOU FORGOT?"

So, what I'm really saying is, screw you, I like being a Leo.

The lines of the star sign are like the lines of the letters of the alphabet, complete abstractions. But of the hundreds of stars in the star signs, and untold numbers of stars and galaxies behind them that are invisible to the eye, all unimaginably hot and massive objects on an astronomic scale, there's probably going to be some kind of forces that can make impressions all the way down on Earth, particularly on the frail and impressionable human psyche. Radio waves or something.

Not to say astrology is a credible science, but dismissing the entire contents of the sky as meaningless would be weird.

Just a counterpoint to this, but the other planets exert at best as much gravitational force on you as a rubber juggling ball, so...

I mean, really, if we wanted to get really technical, the most powerful force in our lives should be the moon, not the stars, planets, or even the sun.

Also, on radio waves, pretty much any effect the stars had on us would have been drowned out by music and TV for years. So really, the world would have been ruled by I Love Lucy and the Spice Girls way more than anything outer space has to offer.

Of course I'm assuming every particle in the universe, including the Spice Girls, is intimately connected to every other particle such as those making up Betelgeuse, in ways we completely lack the science to see, and distance is a minor factor at best.

The Wandering God
01-14-2011, 06:26 PM
I don't think astrology is correct in the idea that distant planets/stars/whatever have an effect on people.

What I do think is that a long time ago, it was noticed by many cultures that people tend to fall into a finite series of archetypes. And rather than think that it was an internal force responsible (like DNA), they attributed the series of different personalities to the stars.

I mean, I don't fully believe this and I'm sure there is scientific data to refute this (nature/nurture), but at the same time people have a tendency to want to categorize others and be sorted themselves. Even if you don't believe in it at all, your subconscious is still being told to act a certain way. Maybe that's why so many people seem (or claim) to fit one sign or another.

Today you're apt to feel especially romantic. Novels, movies, and poetry about love will be appealing. If you're currently romantically involved, consider planning a special evening with your partner. If you aren't involved, you might want to attend a sporting event. Plan an enjoyable evening, Aquarius. Who knows? You could meet someone new and exciting!Capricorn Horoscope:
You might feel overworked today. Your energy could be flagging, and you may even feel feverish. This is probably nothing more than stress, Capricorn. Most likely you should take time out from your busy life and relax. Spend the afternoon at the movies. Treat yourself to dinner out. Buy yourself a present. Tomorrow you should feel better again.
Though neither really applies to me...I don't have any money to treat myself to shit and I can't plan an enjoyable evening because I'm all alone and poor.

Well except that this is because of the precession of the earth which is the kind of thing that happens over hundreds/thousands of years, not over a few decades.

Which is to say that if you go by the guiding stars, and not the seasons version of astrology, these 'new' stars were your guiding stars all along. You were just lieeeeed to.

Lie of omission, due to no one outside of the astrological community* really knowing about the difference between the tropical and sidereal systems, but a lie all the same.
