View Full Version : Your name is a color!

akaSM

Did you know that pretty much any word can be a color? Well, kinda. You know, when changing the font's color something like this appears:

[ COLOR="your color"]your text[/COLOR]

So, what's this thread about? Post something here using your username as a color ^_^

I found this after being silly and using "awesome" as my signature's color :P. How does it work? I have no idea, but maybe one of you do.

You are aware of the fact that you post in white?

EDIT: Well, shit. Seems Firefox doesn't support these colors for some reason, while Chrome does.

akaSM
01-29-2011, 02:36 PM
Hmm, I tested it with Chrome, Opera mini and mobile, and my phone's browser, I haven't used Firefox in a while, sorry. Also, at least my sig's color changes between some purplish color and a green-yellow color depending on the browser ^_^.

I'll need to open this in IE to see it. Firefox is actually CSS-compliant.

EDIT: Ironic. It's dark red in IE. Also, this only works because NPF is still using the deprecated <font> tags. From my doing stuff on FFWiki, the same stuff doesn't happen using <span>.

Howabout that.

How does it determine color, anyway?

Normally, the HTML font tag passes the hexadecimal value for colors or known color names. The browser then reads this information and uses it to generate the text in the appropriate color on your screen.

It seems that Firefox is coded to ignore values that are not valid, being a pretty hardcore standards-compliant program, but Opera, Chrome, IE, etc. are taking these strings of characters and trying to match them to color values. Without seeing the source code of these browsers, I assume there's just some kind of comparison/match being made based on the letters entered. Using deprecated tags can lead to fun, I guess! This is certainly evidence to support not using deprecated tags in actual development, though. ;)

Have any of you discovered if there is a maximum length you can use to get the same color? In other words, could, say, "POS Industries" be shortened to something like "POS Indu" and still have the same color for all values between, inclusive?

Yes, I am running Firefox, so there's no real point in me testing this.

Interesting, Bookworm (now that I loaded it in another browser to see it). I assumed that the browsers were taking the character values and doing some sort of calculation, and this certainly indicates length of the string as well as which characters are used has an effect.

Hmm. I suppose the browsers are just mapping the strings to RGB, and removing letters will reduce the amount of color (or, probably more correctly, darken the hue on the way toward black).
