I don't really understand it either. I've never seen the show, but is it completely just a little kids show that people idolize for some reason, or do they sneak in subtle and funny adult overtones that the little fellas won't notice?

The episode I watched was 100% just a simple plot with a simple moral and no adult overtones that I could see. But the characters are likeable and well defined through dialogue and behavior, it doesn't talk down to its audience, it's very well animated, and the voice acting's good.

Why is it okay for fans to gush all over the place about Homestuck, make Homestuck avatars, openly recoil against any Homestuck criticism, etc., and yet the minute someone wants to do for that for My Little Pony: FIM it's suddenly some catastrophic problem? I highly doubt any of you would give a damn if I was running around hyping Minecraft or Left 4 Dead.

...This isn't you making a principled stand, it's you saying fangasming over some things is appropriate but fangasming over a girl's show makes you feel uncomfortable.

EDIT: It's not the masturbation reference in and of itself that insults me, it's the fact that many critics of MLP fans attack the fans by making overt sexual references to their love for their show, thus trying to demean them by comparing them to furries or suggesting they're finding some deranged sexual pleasure in drawings of little horses.

Then this show comes along, and the characters exhibit emotions besides glee and joy on a frequent basis, and the world takes on ever-so-slightly dark and edgy undertones. For any other franchise universe, this alone wouldn't be enough to draw attention, but we're talking My Little Pony here. Suddenly, the universe is infinitely more fleshed out than it was previously, and this contrast between then and now creates an illusion in people's minds that this show is somehow a Sugar Apocalypse of epic proportions.

At least, since I've taken the time to analyze all this, I can skip watching the actual show for myself. I'm sure I saved myself many soul pains.

Okay there's one episode that is pure Star Trek reference (Tribbles what are those no these are called Parasprites they're totally different), as well as subtle little jokes like the fact that during a race, the character who is the voice of reason wears the number 42, and when one character is randomly shrunken down they call her "Appleteeni." The little details, y'know?

I can't blame anyone for not liking the show, anyway. It's fine to not like something. I just recommend that people give it a shot before going "ewwww nooooo."

Okay did I typo or did anyone actually read what I said? My reference was only even to the sudden popularity of the show, not the show itself. My stance on the show isn't even hate, isn't even dislike! I like it. It's cute. It's decent. It's more than I can say for other drivel out there. It's not the BEST show on television but it's probably the cutest.

I didn't even complain in such a way that I think MLP captioned images should stop. They're usually hilarious. This is yet another case of reality not meeting expectation, and I think we can all agree expectation bars get pretty high here when NPF drums up a topic.
