View Full Version : I'd Call This An "FML" Thread, But I'm Not That Emo

Seriously, 'm not. I can do a "bleh" thread. Yeah, let's go with "bleh."

So I'm working at the convenience store in town. It's neat - there's not a lot of grunt work to do, you just have to be friendly - and the bosses are nice. It's a family run business, and they understand if you want time off, need a pay cheque advance, or something like that. It affords me lots of nice reading time when there's not a lot to do.

The thing is, since it's a family business, you run into some troubles - like today, I opened the store for 8AM, and after a little deliberation with his wife, my boss asked me to work 'till 7PM. Since he's usually nice and courteous, I felt inclined to return the favor, and I'm stuck working my eleven hour shift on one of the first genuinely warm, sunny days of the month.

Blleeeeeeeehh.

Dude, this is so far from FML you can't even see FML with the hubble telescope and I have no idea what value bleh has in Goddamn units.
Sure it's inconvenient, but basically your problem is you have a nice job and have to work pretty long for one day.
If you get paid monies for every hour you work at the store that's even less of a problem.

If not, well. Okay. Bleh.

Man, someone really needs to get on a First World Problems thread tag or something.

Even if they are First World Problems that people are bitching about, they're still going to bitch about them no matter what is said about it.

In any case, look on the bright side Seil, at least you'll get a nice big pay cheque from it.

That would've been a better joke if it had made sense.

Even if they are First World Problems that people are bitching about, they're still going to bitch about them no matter what is said about it.

Yes, and then they would be able to appropriately tag their threads about doing so.

The joke is it doesn't make sense, much like the Seil tag. Gee, no one shares or at least understands my exquisite sense of humor. I am alone in this world.

FML.

Just because other people have it worse or that there's a bright side doesn't mean he's not completely justified in complaining about it. Maybe to him, being outside in the nice weather is worth more than a large paycheck?

Seriously, way to jump down the guy's throat for complaining about a long work day? As if you or I have never done the same.

rpgdemon
04-02-2011, 05:55 PM
Yeah, I always saw the whole, "Oh, well, other people have it worse!" thing as a way of being a jerk. Whether it's meant to be sympathetic or not, it just is saying, "You ought to feel bad for feeling bad!"

The Kneumatic Pnight
04-02-2011, 07:26 PM
It's likely that the only reason anyone commented about it was the phrasing in the respect of FML, but not really FML, friendly boss et cetera, et cetera thing. If he had phrased it slightly differently it could well have instantly become a thread about how awesome it is to be outside on nice days or a thread about things you want to do outside now that it's getting nice out.

I just feel that it or similar things would be better served by taking place in threads with tags that depict a man being crushed under a pile of money or something.

That having been said, as an eyeless cave-fish I don't typically place that much value on nice days, but recently I've been finding myself taking long walks in the nice weather so that's something I guess.

Well, 'FML' is a term that's recently joined the common vernacular, everyone knows what it means...

Another 'White Man's Burden thread, courtesy of Seil.

Guess I shoulda hit 'inconvenient' instead.

"White Man's Burden" is an entirely different concept.

Guess I shoulda hit 'inconvenient' instead.
"Unfortunate". "Dispiriting" if you want to class it up a bit.

Not that you're at fault or anything so much as you pointed out a disparity that people then proceeded to seize on.

That said "FML" is a term that seems to be used almost exclusively in the mildest situations. It sounds very, uh, adolescent...

Although I sympathize with displeasure caused by annoying mundane life stuff I don't necessarily think its wrong to encourage "optimism" or whatever you wanna call it. Seriously life is too short to go through without appreciating your blessings. Especially if you've gone through serious hardships. (Not referring to the OP here, just speaking in general...) Anyways isn't this what the Hate thread is for?

This would fall under the Strawman category but is specifically
1: Strawman
2: Reasoned Response to Strawman
3: Strawman's Stubborn Refusal of Response
4: Violence.

Is this thread actually happening?

Who cares if people around the world are starving, this poor bro has to work extra hours on a nice day!

Seriously what's next? If somebody posts an accomplishment in the Announcement thread, should we inform them of the 32934 people that did someone quite objectively better than them, faster, and possibly stronger?

Hell yeah we can! And we might!

...wait, you're saying this isn't good enough for a fml statement? Have you guys been to fmylife.com lately? Looking at it now, here's the top one:

"Today, I went with my beautiful fiancée to tell her Grandmother, who's a bit senile, that we were engaged. Her response: "I know he's very nice, but think about the chubby little ugly children he'll give you". This was followed by a recollection of her ex-boyfriends who would've fathered attractive kids. FML"

So beautiful people have to listen to their grandparents <_<. At least Seil was forced by social protocol to work unsociable hours that he, in fact, didn't actually want to work. That is, at least, an adequate fml statement, even if poor children are starving and miserable in some other part of the world.

It is Mother's Day in the foreign shores of overseas though. So it's more like a white dude shouting fire and the black guys getting scared but they are ok because it's like a racially discriminating fire.

I hope my mom won't mind celebrating that a bit early or late as around mothers day I have finals...also I really want to quit my job right now. The bullshit I put up with there is starting to work at my nerves. I went to work at open which is about 8:00 am. And worked hard through out the day. And when it came to the time to drop the 8 o clocks I learn that they already droped everyone but me and puts me in the job that would both put me out of site of the managers put me to work in a room I cant leave without clearing off all the tickets there and keeps me there till late at night. Later when I finish the god damn job (about 7:50 pm) I finally ask if I can leave and the stupid fucker says that he didnt realize I have been here all day ( and now night) when on the bored with all our times mine is in bright red and is right next to the fucking job he wrote down for me.

I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cock my eyebrow at that.
I'll just do both, but seriously. What the fuck?

EDIT: Incidentally, you guys complaining about your job?
I make barely €200 per month for a job twice a week.
It is the only job available for me right now, because I simply don't qualify for other stuff. I am not shitting you.
Either I don't have the necessary diplomas or I don't have a driver's license.

Oh, that reminds me:

I was approached by a company last Friday which was desperately looking for employees. So desperately, that they were offering a premium wage (in as far as €1800 a month is a premium wage, I don't know for sure) to random passers-by.
The only requirement was a driver's license, because you'd be delivering... something, I don't remember what, by car to customers.
I don't have a license. They wouldn't help me get one, because they need employees now.

FML.

But more confusion when you call up your mom to say Happy Mother's Day, every day.
