Of course he was eclipsed by Abe Lincoln so he's probably getting a bad rap (like Herbert Hoover).

Re Magus and the Lincoln comparision:
Let's just say my good points about Buchanan were carefully chosen from a much larger (perhaps infinite) list because of the mirror they provide with a certain other president..

If you're going to call a president a war criminal of the era why not pick on Andrew Jackson, easier target because 1. didn't like Buchanan and made antigay slurs about him and 2. more demonstrably a war criminal (give or take).
