But really, beauty contestantpageants say stupid things. Not exactly the most surprising of relevations.

You keep the perspective of "stupid people like this live in other countries, too" to feel better about living in the states.
I keep the perspective of "America is worse than the civilized world as a whole" to feel better about living in the first place.

How is this an inditement on anything? It's a very small sample of ncredibly not representative people, who are actively campaigning in an environment where the wrong answer will cost you the chance of winning.

I can't listen to the video to see whether I'm right, but I'd at least suggest the possibility that at least some of the candidates' answers have less to do with intelligence and more to do with their own prejudices and/or the need to pander to the uninformed prejudices of others.
The pro-ignorance faction of our society is quite a large one and it also disproportionately tends to make up the audience for this sort of pageant.
It's not as if anti-evolution views are limited to unintelligent and uneducated people, there are plenty of people who are otherwise quite knowledgable and informed, particularly in their own specializations, who reject this particular bit of knowledge, along with various others, because it doesn't conform to what they want to believe.
Again, I can't actually watch the video until I get home from work so I mean maybe they all do just come across as super dumb.

Eh. So some people are a little ignorant or value their faith more than science. Not all of these women gave bullshit answers. Sure, they were fairly diplomatic and sometimes silly, but some of them seem to have put a bit of thought into it.

They all do come off as pretty stupid, but it also drives me up the wall because their stupid answers are due, at least in part, due to pandering to groups who make up a large part of our country's population.

Yeah, it's basically this. Beauty pageants are basically political competitions between pretty women in swimsuits and evening gowns, garnering the support of the sort of people who actually care about beauty pageants, which is mostly an even distribution of perverts and the mothers of women who take part in beauty pageants.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that the IQ points involved don't really go up to any significant degree when you move up to the Miss World and Miss Universe tiers, to be perfectly honest.

its all from going in with the wrong mindset. These questions aren't about personal opinion or intelligence to a degree not even politics. Its merely a way to make sure the winner is someone that will draw good press and handle herself in the way you want for the 8 weeks they are relevant to the media.
Also America is far from the worst. There are nations that have spartan beauty bootcamps where they are groomed from early childhood to be pagent winning machines.

I had a friend in a pageant in another country. Her response to "what is beauty" (which I saw live) was so haughty and arrogant (similar to her personality) that she was blacklisted from other events for a time.

I lived in Colorado Springs (you might know us for Ted Haggard and Focus on the Family) and never had a class like that in any of the public schools I attended. You'd have to go to a parochial school to see those, and even then I've heard most of the liberal ones make concessions for people not of the faith (a non-Catholic going to a Catholic school might have a free study period instead of attending a mass, and a lot [but not all] have policy enforced to prevent proselytizing).
And yes, the Catholic schools cover evolution in their science curriculum. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_and_evolution#Catholic_schools_and _evolution)

I don't understand how assuming the country you live in is worse than the rest of the world helps you live. If that were true, wouldn't you move somewhere else where it was better so you'd be healthier?
Anyway, for a real post.
I'm only four minutes in and already I can tell several of these young women are answering while very conscious of the various folks who will probably see their response. And several have promoted evolution just as much as creationism or its ilk. If this trend continues for the rest of the video, I would posit that perhaps you're focusing too much on the responses from girls like the one from Alabama. I mean come on, we all know no one from Alabama is intelligent.

Yes, what sense is there in yearning for truth?
Close your eyes. Lie to yourself. Put on make-up and a pretty dress. Spout out a bunch of shallow, pandering answers to hard questions. Live in blissful ignorance.
