If you've bought MMO gold from farming sites, you may have supported North Korea's nuclear program. (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/08/06/report-north-korea-39-s-kim-jong-il-is-running-mmo-gold-farming-racket.aspx)
The full New York Times article. (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/05/world/asia/05korea.html?_r=3)
In one of the week's oddest stories, the New York Times reports that North Korea, led by notorious despot Kim Jong-il, is using a team of hackers to infiltrate popular South Korean MMORPGs and farm in-game points.
Western sources believe the money generated through these activities is used to help fund North Korea's nuclear program and Kim Jong-il's lavish lifestyle.
I may or may not have contributed a few bucks to that. Oh well. I wasn't sure where to put this because it's a little newsy, a little video game-ish, and a tad ridiculous.
Well, Bob, if you weren't contributing to North Korea's nukes, you were probably contributing to the torture of China's political prisoners.

Don't nuclear programs cost hundreds of millions or even billions? And they've made, what, 6 million? That's not even pocket change

At least I know my money was being used for something legitimate and not things like wealth redistribution and social justice! :argh:

That's South Korea.
North Koreans are generally pretty poor and downtrodden folks. Of course the upper class, military families, Kim Jong Il and his family... they all live pretty well off.

It's just that lots of people don't know the acronyms.
For the uniformed: DPRK = Democratic People's Republic of Korea = North Korea.
ROK = Republic of Korea = South Korea.

reminds me of this quote
Sir Humphrey: East Yemen, isn't that a democracy?
Foreign Office Official: Its full name is the Peoples' Democratic Republic of East Yemen.
Sir Humphrey: Ah I see, so it's a communist dictatorship

...What?
To be fair, I can totally picture North Korea's entire nuclear weapons program as some guy going "PSST! You got nukes for sale?"

I reckon lots of their nukes turn out to be repainted grain silos with some fireworks strapped to the bottom.

So... Korean MMO Games like Mabinogi are secretly being used to fond NK's Nukes program?
Wow what a great time for me to pick Cosmic Break to waste money on over that and other MMOs instead.
