So with my entire state shaded red under a hurricane warning and the weather channel calling this potentially the worst threat to the northeast in decades, I'm starting to get just a little concerned here. The last hurricane I actually experienced was Floyd in 1999 where we had a foot of water in the basement and power was out for a week. And that was a glancing blow. This could be a category 2 by the time it gets here.
I know there are others here who are more experienced in the natural disaster department than me, so how do you prepare? We have a generator, enough for the refrigerator and sum pump, my police scanner, some batteries and other odds and ends. I just want to know what I should have on hand, because I know I'll forget something.
[Edit] Also, my house is flanked by two small rivers that have a habit of flooding right over my road when it rains heavily for an extended period of time. So there is the potential I'll be stranded at one point.

Tornado warning above me. I'm watching the sky.
It's beautiful. I've been sitting outside watching it. Green clouds against the red sky, blending together in the setting sunlight; rain dancing over us occasionally, winds coming in short, chaotic gusts.
It's like a poem that you can't capture on paper.

Keep lots of fresh water handy, enough to last up to a week if needed.
Canned food. If you don't have to heat it up, the better.
If you can, board up windows with plywood. If you can't, put up tape in an X shape over it.
First aid kit.
Keep a battery-powered radio handy.
Charge up your cellphone if you have one, keep it on you at all times in case of emergancy.
Keep your car fully gassed in case you need to leave, and for the love of the gods... TAKE OUT SOME CASH if you need to pay for something.
Get copies of your important papers, and seal them in a waterproof ziploc bag.
Move anything you don't want ruined and can move up high.
Get something like a little camping stove, in case you do need to heat up something or to boil water.
And finally... if they tell you to evacuate... GET OUT. Take your important papers with you, along with cash.

I'm in Mass as well, but not too concerned about this.
I mean, yes, it's concerning, but in terms of flooding at least, we got hit pretty bad for the past few years to the points where streets were unusable, and I was fine.
Tornadoes/wind are the only things I'm worried about.

I remember Floyd. I was a young lad who didn't understand danger and thought it was really cool all the trees that had been uprooted. I made the bangingest tree fort. Although if it had gone the other way it would really fucked us up and landed on our house. Which would have been really bad considering we were on food stamps at the time.
But I have been through Hugo, Bertha, Klaus, Lili, Bob, Grace, Andrew, Gordon, Allison, Felix, Bertha 2, Fran(Fran might have been the one who made my fort, can't remember), Earl, Floyd, Irene, Isidore, Fabian, Alex, Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne, Noel, Bill, and Earl.
Fran and Floyd were bad, don't get me wrong. But when people think of hurricanes they think of Katrina which was pretty unique.

Am I the only one who thought of this when I saw the title? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXLHUThBib8)
Anyway, you may want to invest in one of those water pumps to pump stuff out of your basement if it happens too often, but since it only happens once a decade, you'll probably have to pay one of those water damage companies out the nose to take care of things for you...

Dear Irene:
I'm sorry. I know you're not going to want to hear this.
You see, I have a date with another woman this Sunday.
Subsequently, I really can't have you be seen anywhere near me.
I know, I know. You find me irresistible. I mean, look at you. I'm practically front and center in your crosshairs for Sunday.
It's just...
Well, you're a bit too moody for me. Too impulsive, too angry. One moment you're crying a torrent of tears, the next you're raging and howling. Sometimes I think you even mean to strike me dead, Irene.
(And you're a bit too large, too. You should really consider losing weight, Irene.)
This other girl I'm seeing, she's far sweeter than you'd ever be.
So, you understand, don't you? Please don't come here on Sunday, Irene. We need to see other people.
...You should consider swerving away from DC and totally visiting New Jersey, though. There's this guy named Rob who lives in Jersey, and I think he's just your type! =)

Hopefully this doesn't fuck with his plans too much, he starts a new job on Monday :ohdear:

I am thinking less and less about moving far away from my natural disaster safezone (at worse we might get some bad lightning and wind, maybe a flood if one of the dams get fucked over). Move to the Pacific Northwest if you don't like shit like Irene stopping by to have a party in your neighborhood.

I'm in that area where earthquakes are a nonexistent problem. If Mt. Saint Helens decides to erupt again I'm far enough away that the ash problem shouldn't be too bad (at worst the local crops will be fertilized more).

^Yup, and we're all pretty screwed if it does blow up. There could be ash suspended in the sky for maybe over a year with that kind of explosion.
Is it weird that I'm semi-excited about having the final winds of the hurricane pass us by in Montreal? I mean, it's already rare enough that any leftover winds from hurricanes actually get to us in time to be somewhat powerful, but this time, 65 mph (I think that's 100 km and hour here) is pretty damn fast for winds around here. What can I expect here for winds of that speed?

Last night all the flights at the Toronto Pearson airport were canceled and we got a whole bunch of rain. Lots of insane lightning too. Yesterday morning a truck carrying gravel got flipped over by the wind on the major highway here and it had to be closed down. Fortunately I'm not in the hurricane zone.
I hope those of you in the area manage okay! :/

Dear Aldurin,
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e0/2037_Apophis_Path_of_Risk.jpg
This is the pathway of probable impact zones of the Apophis Asteroid (almost 900 feet wide), that has a real possibility of hitting earth on 2036. It's impact is estimated at around 500 Megatons of force, an Hydrogen bomb being 50 Megatons.
So, as you can see, not only it may nuke Mexico, but also, if it hits the Water it will sandblast with tsunamis one of the coast of the USA.
Lesson? Move to Canada now, your country is broken.

It's not just St. Helens... There's Mount Hood and Mount Rainer.
And Apophis has a VERY slim chance at hitting... It would have to go down an extremely specific path in order to increase it's risk level when it passes by in 2029.

Murphy's law?
All kidding aside, if you any of you that could get affected by this need to stack on provisions, i would suggest do it slowly and sooner... i wouldn't be surprised if it got that much more complex to get certain supplies if the situation escalates from now on, also wouldn't be surprised if most shops raked up the prices once the realize that a) people will buy a ton of stuff they usually wouldn't b) if they get hit there will be damage and they will need more cash to fix it anyways...
Other than that, stay safe and try to keep some communication going on alright? Always best to know a situation without the "News Media Filter" all over.

I'm charging both our netbooks for the specific purpose of charging our phones. But even then, doubtful we'll have any cell reception. And now they're saying we could be out of power for at least a week. Which makes sense since we always get trees coming down during severe storms.
NYC is evacuating about 300,000 people and expecting most of lower Manhattan to flood. The shore is under mandatory evacuation and the governor is saying this could be a once-every-hundred-years event that we'll be telling our children about. :aaa:
I'm heading out tomorrow to pick up a few more things. Still need D batteries and some food, but drinks we're stocked up on. Except for alcohol.

It's odd. The Carolinas both have people evacuating and stuff, the North East is declaring states of emergency and also evacuating, yet, right here in the middle, Virginia isn't doing squat. I've checked. We have a (unrelated to Irene) thunderstorm watch central, and flashflood watches East, but nothing I can point out to my boss to get out of work.
I don't want to go to work, guys. Seriously, can't the governor or someone say something like, "Don't drive into a hurricane for minimum wage?"

Oh, well, we have our own well which has a pump attached to it, the pump runs off of electricity. I'm not sure how municipal water lines work...
Tap water can get contaminated and undrinkable.
I was probably thinking from the perspective of someone with a gas stove who can still boil the water without electricity, I guess if they're just buying it to drink it makes sense because lots of people have only electric stoves...

I ended up calling out sick today.
Throwing up vs going to work during all this craziness? I think I still prefer the former, so uh, thanks, whatever bug I've come down with!
Anyways, it has rained a bit. That is all.

I'm confused. The TV news is saying this is going to be a bad one, then you have these internet meteorologists saying the strength isn't even that of a tropical storm. I don't care what anyone says, 8-12 inches of rain is a big deal. Even without the wind.
I'm at the radio station and a message just came over the emergency alert system about a flood warning.
Flarecobra

With tropical storms, it's not the winds, but the water you worry about. For example, in some places in the Carolinas, they already have four feet of standing water.

Yeah the rain and coastal surges are going to be far worse than the wind with this hurricane (which is still technically Category One, I believe, and will remain so for another few hours.)
DC is getting absolutely drenched as we speak, but the wind really isn't bad at all. I've experienced conventional storms over the summer with stronger wind gusts.

Same as Snake. It's been pouring for about two hours, but only small gusts of wind.
The ride home sucked.

Yup. Sums up what's going on here.
Edit: Though, not pouring so much as pouring a TON, then going to like no rain, then a TON, then none, then a TON.
Double edit: Noneish right now.

That's how it starts. It tries to lull you into a false sense of security.
I'm unplugging the computer for the night and probably heading to bed. We'll see if the lights are still on in the morning.

We might have rain in a few hours.
Also I was tempted to start a drinking game based on "storm surge" and/or just "surge", but I didn't want to die. Also also make sure you got your water!
A friend was down in DC and overheard a family discussing their need for eggs (????) for during the storm and that, if it got bad enough, they would be fine 'cause they could just go outside and grill when the power was out.

I'mma let you finish, Nikose, but we had the greatest landfall of all time. ;) Stay safe, man. Prepare for a lot of water, even though you're in a highrise.
Also, there will be outrage in New York. It's already obvious that, thankfully, this isn't as horrible as was predicted. On the spot reporters are doing their best to make this a story when it has really become a big rainstorm. People will complain that they stocked up and evacuated for nothing. With these things you're either over or underprepared. I just hope people have more self control than that. The government made an assessment based on the information given to them by specialists in a field where 100% accuracy is impossible, with their safety in mind.
And to top it off, I've already heard speculation that the eeeevil mainstream media overblew this to make it look like Obama was coming to the rescue.
And the cable just went out. :(

I got the hell out of CNU, so I'm not weathering the storm myself. We did get most of our furniture off the floor and sandbagged the door, though. I just hope I don't go back on Monday to find a ruined apartment.

This is my road, or was my road. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/BobtheMercenary/ca55a5f8.mp4). That's about 100 yards from my house. On a normal day that river flows about three feet underneath the small white bridge in the distance. Right now there's only one direction I can go, and we just took a trip to the next town over to refill our gas tanks for the generator.

Eh, it's raining here a bit and some wind, but nothing too big as of now. The wind will probably pick up soon though...
It's more the shitty constructions hours on the many roads at the moment (they're re-building all the sidewalks), added to the storm, that will make traffic worst here. It all depends which highways you're taking.

I spent my entire Friday and Saturday evacuating 2 hospitals. I stocked up on some basic essentials just in case so my sister could survive without me. I spent 72 hours at work, sleeping either in a conference chair or in an ambulance. Yes, there was flooding. Yes, there was wind and trees down. Yes, there was power lost. But a cat 1 hurricane? Fuck no. I was watching the weather channel all night and it looked so ominous until it just...petered out near the end.
For the record, my apartment (Queens, NY) did not lose power once, did not flood, and aside from some small tree branches in the street, did not have any damage at all. Part of me is actually upset that I worked so hard this weekend for practically nothing.

I guess I was too far inland to really get anything, cause it rained a lot, but then it felt great outside.
I usually live on the coast, but I have been visiting old family and friends. Everyone I know on the coast like said there was some light water damage to their place and they lost power for an hour. So NC was alright.

Still out of power, staying at my dad's tonight because his came back on. SO many computers came in with fried power supplies today it was nuts. One guy's desktop was completely submerged, but the hard drive still worked.
Also found out my grandma's house in Bergen County had two feet of water in the basement and the wood paneling needs to be replaced. Part of an interstate collapsed this morning and still lots of roads closed with flooding.

I haven't had power since Saturday and, according to the power company, won't be getting power back until Friday evening. Really, the only major impact not having power has had is changing my drinks from cold beer to warm rum. And I guess all my food is melted.
