I wouldn't be surprised if our government did try to use it. They've done worse with the conspiracy charges.

Yes it is their right for them to think/say what they want. And we dont mind that. Because we have the right to argue with them. But this is just retarded in any logical sense. While i do see the reasoning behind this bill it still stomps all over the rights of people.

"American" is the perceived positive ideals of the populace, i.e. "Free Speech, Acceptance of all, Right to defend and protect yourself, and Support for those in need."
UnAmerican is anything that openly violates those ideals people perceive to be American.
How accurate those ideals are, how inspired or ignored they may be, are how I perceive Americanism. It's an entirely different discussion, to see if America was ever American.

Does the Smith Bill actually say in effect 'anyone who discusses/ plans/ or advises'? Becuase if so that is nuts. But I don't see something that gives carte blanche like that getting through.

It doesn't really strike me as an issue of freedom of speech so much as an issue of jesus christ who the fuck would look at the results of our drug policy and think "hey I know this is awesome and all, but don't you think the rest of the world is really missing out?"

Right when I had typed that I realized how terribly inept I am at forcing myself into the perspective of the people who make these sorts of decisions. On-topically yeah IDK that this is exactly a free-speech issue so much as just the general reason-free insanity of the war on (some groups of people who use particular kinds of) drugs. In a way it's kind of worse than a free-speech issue since, as one guy in the OP's article points out, it's more just destructive to like, any sane notion of what law is and how it should work.

Basically attempting to enforce American laws on foreign soil is impossible. And why just in regard to American citizens? Why not start arresting Bhutanese for having more than one wife or arresting Dutch people for smoking pot and having sex with prostitutes?
Then again, arresting the Koch brothers for "legally" selling equipment to the Iranians through foreign holdings...it is sort of appealing. But since it mainly seems aimed at like arresting dudes for smoking pot in Amsterdam I think we can all safely say it's dead on arrival, both constitutionally, ethically, freaking reasonably, in that I can't even think of a good reason where it would ever actually be applied.

Like I can see how this is a source of concern but I thought we had an international police organization to deal with international crime...I believe it's called something like INTERPOL. Like you know just pass the evidence onto INTERPOL and extradite the fellows to your nearest INTERPOL location and let them prosecute the dudes? Seems pretty simple, I'm sure something could be worked out.
And yeah, Doublethink seems to be responsible for most of our current political atmosphere. Like your average citizen is normally all like "MAN I'M JEALOUS OF RICH PEOPLE, WHY ARE THEY BETTER THAN ME? I SHOULD BE GETTING ALL THESE TAX CREDITS AND WHAT NOT!" but then somebody is like "Give more money to rich people and you will get some more money too somehow" and suddenly they're all like 'MAN GIVE THOSE RICH PEOPLE SOME MORE MONEY INSTEAD OF JUST GIVING IT STRAIGHT TO ME, THAT MAKES WAY MORE SENSE. It's more a reaction caused by how the last few members we got uh didn't seem to do the first part of what you said. The last guy had a meltdown and called us all LIEberals. Before him was Aldurin who has turned out well but some of his early posts were kinda aneurysm inducing.
That and we tend to run things into the ground here sometimes. We're a very bandwagony group.
