I mean, we've all been there, right?

I picked up a copy of American Serial Killers (http://www.amazon.com/Americas-Serial-Killers-Portraits-Evil/dp/B001LN6NRE), which seems to be well-researched (if mixed with a few poor editing choices) but the first killer they research is Jack The Ripper. They mention the letters (http://www.casebook.org/ripper_letters/), a movies and literature a bit, as well as touching on the victims.

I've been interested in Mr. Ripper since... well, for a while now. I've always been fascinated by the macabre (nuklearforums.com/showthread.php?t=30720). And while I thought that we could have a needlessly in-depth conversation into why, and how, and who all is featured in the above linked movie, I thought we might focus our attention on the most famous one. Where he was never caught.

Yes - never caught. Jack The Ripper could be out there right now! In your neighborhood! On your street! Help stop him now before it's too late!

American serial killers

Jack the Ripper

Does anyone else see a problem here? Or was there a prominent suspect that was specifically discussed who happened to be American?

"American Serial Killers" ... Jack The Ripper. What the fuck? Trying to pawn off your serial killers on The States, UK? We have our own serial killers, tank you very much, don't need the help. They mentioned him specifically because he was the 'first' mass publicized serial killer; sending letters to the press and all that.

I think the thinking is, since all and any leads on who Jack the Ripper was have long since been lost, though he started in England, he could very well have hopped a boat to the States sometime in the past.

That's the scary thing about serial killers. You just NEVER KNOW.

Unless it's me. I seem to be a serial killer of threads on this forum.

Yeah, the three prevailing lines of thought are 1) He died 2) They caught him at some point for something and never found out it was him or 3) He eventually fled the country .

If Liz is Dracula, then I demand to see a moon-laser.

This is the plot of a new movie or a book or a video game or something that is coming out, I believe. Sounds pretty damn familiar...

Anyway, the Zodiac Killer is more interesting than Jack the Ripper, just because of the letters, encrypted codes, the sheer audacity of some of the shootings which took place right out in the open, sending parts of the victims' clothing or their blood to the media and the police to taunt them, etc.

That and he made the term DEAR EDITOR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49HcaDBqTwU) pretty damn chilling in and of itself! People writing songs about him and everything! Also, Zodiac was a pretty great movie, too.

Really? If anyone read me reviews anymore, I'd be tempted to do that. Also, Jack the Ripper was in Hellraiser comics. Was the Zodiac?

...I'm not sure that was a point toward or against either.

Anyway, Albert Fish has come up in the DVD. Albert Fish be whack, yo.

Albert Fish: Originally named Hamilton Fish. So emotionally scarred by being called "Ham & Eggs" as a child he felt compelled to rape and murder 100 children.

Well, the naked beatings in front of other children in the orphanage he was in, which eventually led to a love of sado-masochism, causing erections at the prospect of pain, might have had something to do with it.

But personally I blame the nickname "Ham & Eggs".
