Why do I keep coming back to NPF?

I do not know. I mean the original reason I joined was because I liked 8-Bit Theater so much, but that has been over for a long time. Most of the stuff that is talked about is boring, most of the stuff that I like is either dismissed or lampooned by the forum. Maybe it is my hope that someone might agree with what I say from time to time, I do not know. I guess in some ways I can relate with most of the regular members, even if I do not always agree with them. Maybe the rest of you can help, why do we keep coming back to a place that is almost never that satisfying to visit? :raise:

In my own case, its the interesting people & discussion topics. Admittedly, I don't pipe up nearly as much as I used too, or actively take part in many discussions, but I still hang around.

Of course, given how infrequently I post (reinforced by the fact, that I've never been a big poster), I'm sure most think I'm a new user or something. Not a guy who's been around since the near onset of 8-Bit theater.

The site is important to me because of the comics I post, and I hope some day they're as important to the forumites as 8-bit was (though I doubt that'll happen). But it seems as of now people are more interested in discussing the webcomics on other sites, or 8-bit, and aren't as interested in The Dreadful yet (though its threads have been picking up lately, and there are a lot of posts on them, so I'm definitely encouraged!). That makes sense because all that other stuff has years and years of content (and are probably better, though I think what I do is pretty good. I have fun at least.). It looks like I have a lot of work to do!

I also like looking around the forums because I like the discussions here and most of the people are cool. I've made some good friends in the short time I've been around. And I also think if I can know the audience better I can make more enjoyable stuff.

And I won't mention dicks so Snake will be able to keep the topic on its proper course :)

I mean, I've been on the forums for 10 years (EZ boards what!) and I can't really think of any significant amount of time I haven't been with NPF (not counting family vacations sans internets back in the day, or going overseas). EDIT: The really sad thing about rereading that thread is how I went out with Girl B again, failed with her for reasons completely unrelated to those I was freaking about when writing that rant, then went out with over a dozen other girls over the course of three months, failed with all of them for various reasons, became so depressed about dating that I just threw my hands up into the air and gave up, and now am still just as single and lonely, only having lost hours upon hours of my time, caused myself untold amounts of additional stress, and wasted hundreds of dollars of monies.

I'd rather you point-blank insult me for throwing a hissy fit over my failings. Telling me that she's out there and I just haven't found the perfect match is borderline insulting. First of all, relationships just don't work like that, and secondly, more than enough people in this universe are old and lonely have remained single all their lives to destroy any foolish notion that somehow everyone is merited or entitled to find true love someday.

It's particularly insulting from those in relationships, because it's like they're just on some other universe where they just pretend or imagine that just because they eventually lucked into love that everyone else can too, just by sitting on their asses and waiting patiently for the Love Fairy to stop by and visit. Then you have mister 'I have to use every book available' and force you to pause just to look up the rules. Last but not least is the newbie who doesn't know what the hell they're doing because nobody bothered to teach them the rules.

EDIT: The really sad thing about rereading that thread is how I went out with Girl B again, failed with her for reasons completely unrelated to those I was freaking about when writing that rant, then went out with over a dozen other girls over the course of three months, failed with all of them for various reasons, became so depressed about dating that I just threw my hands up into the air and gave up, and now am still just as single and lonely, only having lost hours upon hours of my time, caused myself untold amounts of additional stress, and wasted hundreds of dollars of monies.

I come back here because on the other forum I frequent there's a politics & religion section which is 75% made up of people who seriously argue that homosexuals are "revolting" and "disgusting", brag about how many gays they've beaten up and how many felonies they've committed, how households with lesbian parents abuse their children more than "normal" households and oh one person even said that if they were raised by a lesbian couple they would either run away or hang themselves, how abortion is wrong because there is a shortage of babies*, and a whole bunch of dlskjhfdskjdfhs And this is like normal stuff on this forum that doesn't get moderated very much.

And most of these people aren't actually trolling!

*Note: I realize that many NPF members are against abortion. It's not the stance itself that bothers me (although I disagree with it), it's the fact that someone seriously is arguing against abortion with the most nonsensical argument that I've ever heard.

Sounds like a neat idea. Of course, sprites really work better with advance planning. For a number of reasons...

First, its really good to find an existing game or style that you like the look of. I've seen sprite comics that try to make their own sprites, but they really don't look like any actual period game.

Based on what I've seen of the comic, I think Space Quest 2, King's Quest 1-3, & Leisure Suit Larry 1-2, might be the best fodder for a game format that fits your comic.


It also helps to have generic sprites in advance of the script. While I enjoyed the early comics, sometimes I found them downright painful in seeing what Brian was attempting to do, with what the actual sprites could accomplish.

As some might know, it started with me just making the Final Fantasy 3 (japanese) Magic Knight (which Brian had been using for Garland) look a bit more like the FF1 Garland.

I didn't even do a very good job, and learned several things afterward, but the original stuck.

Next, I think I moved on to making Sara less than a brick. And giving the regular cast a few generic moves. I then got sick of Brian using overland sprites (like King Steve) with the regular cast.

So I created King Steve from the FF3j prince sprite, and just gave him a new head. I also made a sprite for Queen Steve (or whatever her name was), but you only saw her as... Emo Vampire guy's mom.

(And for some reason, I can't rememer his name anymore. Vilbert, maybe?)

Actually, I should look into releasing all my sprites at one point. I mean, I created enough that didn't get used that it might be of some interest. Still, I'd like to find a place to store them all, that everyone can access.

In related news, would anyone have reconditions of where I might host my sprites? I too lazy to research it, and figure if you are really interested, I might get some ideas.

Mediafire is lovely and lets you upload a lot and link it as a folder-type thing with a name made of words all with a free account. It's pretty great. But that's just if you want to post them as downloads; pretty sure you can't hotlink the files and have them show up as blocky pictures on NPF.

If you want to host them and then share them as pictures in this thread, I dunno. Imageshack kinda annoys me sometimes, but it doesn't re-size images, lets you upload a lot, lets you upload more than one thing at once, and only deletes stuff for no reason occasionally.
