So I coming to the end of my contract here and looking for new jobs and have a few options. But instead of deciding for myself, I'm going to let NPF decide my future.
I would put in a totally binding poll but I don't know how.
Option A: Alternative energy in Saudi Arabia.
Pro:
Topic is really interesting
I get to work with my old supervisor who is ace and will look after me.
They'll give me living expenses while I@m finishing off some writing for my contract
Con:
It's fucking saudi arabia.

Option B: MAGMA at UCL
Pro:
UCL is badass
London is full of crazy fucks
Con:
I'll have mega visa issues becuase europeans are racist whereas saudis love everyone
Don't get paid much and London is expensive.

Option C: Find a real job you lazy fuck
Pro:
Lots of money
Con:
Selling out my class

Option D:
Become a drifter.
Pro:
Drifters are like the fairy godmothers of the street.
Con:
Drifters are like the fairy godmothers of the street.

A is clearly the most responsible choice; As this is a "REAL LIFE" thread I literally cannot recommend anything but A.

A sounds useful and the most clearly superior choice unless you have some rage-boner for London that you absolutely must indulge for some reason.

Well, I'm pretty sure you don't speak Arabic and you're used to britain's cool, temperate climate. Your general disdain of religion could probably get you in a lot of trouble, given that Sharia law seems to be the basis of their legal system, and I'm not sure how they look upon alcohol consumption there. You'd spend your days doing good work in an alien and constrictive environment. Plus, you'd be living in a monarchy, and the regional instability would probably add an element of political uncertainty to your life there.

So what I'm saying is you should definitely take the job in Saudi Arabia.

Work two/three jobs, by doing A by day in Saudi Arabia and then combining B with a prostitution gig (whether you're the pimp or the whore is your choice) in London.

I've been considering Saudi Arabia myself, would probably be there already if not for the fact that I'm married now. They sure do hate them some womens there, they surely dos.

I vote you get a real fucking job and a haircut. Also buy a bmw.

Follow the cash. Follow the sweet sweet rivers of cash, coursing forth from Saudi Arabia. Emerge from your journey through the desert of academia and discover the oasis of money that awaits.

Then take their money and move to London later. Brilliant brilliant BRILLIANT.

A. Goes without saying. Better money, more contact opportunities(and contract opportunities) annnd you pretty much have a direct in with your supervisor.

Don't be a non-smarty mcpoopypants.

The correct answer is D.

In no way, shape or form am I prepared to continue existing in a world in which Smarty of all people is gainfully employed in a foreign country while I'm still searching for future employment while suffering in law school.

It goes against every assumption I've made of both Smarty's character and my own in ways that are very unsettling

Man you dudes actually giving some sensible advice. Only Gem lived up to my expectations of this forum.
I'm trying to arrange going to Saudi for a month currentely to out the facilities and what living in Saudi will be like. This could be pretty madass.
Also you can't buy booze there. It'll be like the mega detox.

As for real advice, have you looked around to see if there are any other options? The options presented, seem to be all or nothing. Let's say you go to SA, and the job doesn't pan out.

Then you're stuck there, and have to figure something out. Not that this isn't true of any job, but my preference would be on a job that's a tad closer to home.

Professor Smarmiarty
02-06-2012, 09:52 AM
I live as mathmatically far away from home as possible.
Any job I take that is not here actually brings me closer to home.
This is why where I can get a visa is a reasonable issue, my UK visa runs out in a few months.

Sky Warrior Bob
02-06-2012, 01:40 PM
Where you go to school & where you set up roots, are two different things. I don't really know the exact terms of any of your potential opportunities, but they sound tenuous, in the way you describe them.

I guess you need to look at your options & determine which feels the most comfortable. If the answer is D, none of the above. Maybe you might want to reexamine your options, that's all I'm saying.

You probably mean farthest away in terms of distance, but wouldn't being on the ISS or something be farther away in the difficulty of getting from one to the other?

Also you can't buy booze there.

I will give you the advice that I gave a friend who joined the military and went to a dry country.

Learn how to brew, get someone to send you yeast. Free beer/wine forever.

(I taught the person in question how to brew, since he asked. :I)

Go do A; become feminist/pro-democracy agitator; throw molotov cocktails with headscarves for fuses; found new Middle Eastern Feminist Booze-topia. Not "a secular country that allows booze and is cool with women's rights", I mean fucking run by booze. And feminism. Both of those things.

It would probably implode spectacularly, but what a fascinating failure it would be.

Update- I can't really "stay where my roots are", I don't really have any. I moved away from home when I was like 18, been travelling the world since. Staying in one place is for hobos.

that said I've applied for some jobs in Australia and New Zealand because those are the only countries where te weather isn't stupid like all of Europe/America.
But the saudis want me to come visit for a bit while I finish off my contract here so I;'m going to go over there for a month or so and they put me up in a sweet hotel apparentely.
Like a sweet sitcom I'm playing both sides and still keepin gthe UCL open (that one not start till April) so they just chasing down my references and checking out whether I will get a new visa before they make an offer.
Mostly I just want to live in a hotel.
