View Full Version : [Shameless Ripoff] The Cool, Awesome and Otherwise Interesting Picture Thread

There are some things money can't buy. For all those generally impressive-yet-not-necessarily-funny images you find floating around on the Internet, there's this thread.
Ground rules are more or less same as the Funny Images thread:
- No blatantly NSFW images and no gratuitously weird or gross stuff. Use your common sense about what would be suitable to share and keep the forum's rules in mind.
-Keep images to no more than 1-2 per post and of a reasonable size. Hide larger images with either the SWAP tags or a direct link to a separate page. This system should also be used to share images that might skirt the first two rules without completely breaking them. Once again, use your common sense about what to share and what to keep mum about.
-NO HOTLINKING. I'll just straight up quote Fenris on this.
Don't hotlink images, rehost them. For example on:
www.imgur.com
www.photobucket.com
www.tinypic.com
www.dropbox.com
or any other dedicated image hoster you know.
Clarification on "do not hotlink": if you're directly using the address of a picture you found on a site, and that site hasn't provided you the address or forum code ready to post, you're hotlinking.
With that in mind, let's kick things off.

An abandoned city. I have no idea where it is (Thailand, I think, but don't hold me to that), but it looks totally awesome.

Wow, I've never understood the attraction of James Dean until I saw that picture. Is it really him? Is it from a movie? Can I have a sex change and a time machine?
Also, huh @ smexy winged-liontaur sphinx.
Rethread edit: "Abandoned Russian particle accelerator" may be most curious four words ever put together.

Wow, I've never seen a Sphinx that had a mane with a torso coming out of it like that. Thanks for showing that Dracnoir.

Now the odd medallion I've got here has a much odder story behind it: It was dug up in 1929 in Michigan's Isle Royal. At first some people thought it was Masonic, but in 1989, some Tibetian Monks took a gander at it and said it was from Borobudur, Java. Side one depicted a temple that was there, and side two has the heart and wishbone showing devotion to the Java royal family whose symbol was the lion.
This leaves a great big mystery as to how it ever wound up in Michigan.

Oh, and take a gander at England's mos absurdly complicated Coat of Arms:

Its owned by the dukes of Buckingham and Chandos.
