NPF: The Webcomic

Here's the plan. First, everyone who wants in on this writes a character sheet containing as much information about themselves as humanly possible. Be honest, or at least try to write your character as someone who could coexist with the other characters in some capacity. Character design would also be appreciated.

Then I'll write one or more stories involving those characters. I don't know what direction we might go. You should specify who if anyone your character might sleep with. I need boundaries. You'd be welcome to write if you want of course, I'm just saying I'll do it and get the ball rolling.

And when I can I'll post a script or three for peer review. If everyone's happy, then begins the tricky part of drawing the comic. Everyone's welcome to try. I'm going to be able to do it, it's not a question of it happening at all, just how many artists we can get and whose styles we might enjoy.

There's no part of this project that we can't handle. I'll do it myself if it comes to that. I just need characters to work with cause I don't know you guys as well as I'd like.

I should have mentioned, for anyone not versed in the subtetlies of the community-comics business, you can drop out at any time if you don't like what we do with your character. Depending on the circumstances, at worst it'll make you uncool like a diva with unchecked ego. You're not giving up any likeness rights or anything, as technically everything that involves your character in a comic is going to need your explicit permission to happen.

I have done a webcomic previously based on an ensemble of RL friends. I was portrayed as basically a computer dunce but socially well adjusted. I'm fine with being a character in this but I'm not certain how you'd distinguish between me and, like, snake, minus his comically tragic attempts at dating.

Abilities Description

Firebreath: Expels gout of flame from jaws. Flames are produced by an incendiary liquid secreted by a specialized organ within the body; this substance can stick to solid objects, causing them to burn continuously.

Fireball: Like Firebreath, but expelled material takes the form of a large mortar-like lump. Smaller effective range than Firebreath, but fire mortars do greater concentrated damage.

Dragon Shout: Despair - Induces fear in lesser creatures; more intelligent or willful beings are not as susceptible, effect falls off over distance (nearby beings are more heavily affected than ones further away). Subjects must be able to hear Shout. Fear effect is boosted when used in Dragon form.

Dragon Shout: Command Reptiles - Dominates the mind of non sapient reptiles and reptilian creatures in a nearby radius and forces them to behave according to Shyria's command. Intelligent reptilian beings are not affected, effect falls off over distance (assuming two identical reptiles, the reptile closest to Shyria is more heavily dominated than the one at the periphery). Effectiveness depends on abundance and type of reptiles in area in question.

Ladon's Vigilance: Passive ability, always active unless deliberately suppressed. Increases Shyria's maximum sight range and focus in well-lit areas (does not affect night vision).

Burning Blood: In sufficiently desperate situations, Shyria can command her recently spilt blood to ignite and damage anything in contact with it. Blood must be in close range and sufficiently fresh to be affected; old, dried or coagulated blood is not affected. Ability can only be used in dragon form.

Physical Weaknesses: Night vision is considerably weaker than daylight vision. Psychological aversion to closed spaces and water bordering on phobia. Keen hearing and smell can be easily overloaded. Massively weak against specialized dragon slaying weapons and certain natural substances, most prominently dragonsbane and the sap/plant oils of the peridexion tree.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it as a personal dig, but a statement about NPF as a whole.

Here's what tends to happen when anyone on NPF organizes group stuff(although I can't account for RPs, I don't pay attention to those much):


Some people get Genuinely Interested
People show up, Do Stuff, all is well
After a few Days/Weeks, people stop showing up with no explanation or prior notice whatsoever
Those organizing call it quits, the Group Thing dies before it really becomes A Thing/moves off NPF


I think Fifthcraft, Steam Nights, and Animoo Chat Party Whatever-We-Call-It(Mostly just Liz and me, sometimes maybe Bit or Grim) are all that's left, although both of NPF's RO shenanigans lasted quite awhile. Everything else we try and organize to do together tends to fall apart.

If I'm wrong in any way or something, feel free to correct me(although possibly in a new thread?).

That said, I do wish you the best of luck. Hopefully things take off for this project, and people don't drop out without saying anything. :(

Combat abilities: Retains his primary equipment from the Xenocidal War. His main weapon is an exotic katana with bizarre circuit designs embedded in, allowing it to generate orange plasma to either accelerate the sword for increased damage or to fling it for damaging ranged targets. Can use his nano-regeneration unit to manifest other weapons within a few minutes (notably a forearm-mounted magnetic pulse launcher, sending any projectile at close to the speed of light for near infinite range). Specialized combat software makes him unmatched against anything that isn't an android of his era.
Defensive moves: Can regenerate anything in seconds using a nano-regeneration system, even altering appearance at will. Can create a dense skin structure to resist heavy blows, but prefers standard appearance and density for maneuverability. Achieves impossible dodging ability by combining microthrusters with combat software, capable of of insane acceleration (roughly 0 to 300 mph in 50 nanoseconds, but can only sustain 120 mph land speed) in any direction for impossibly reflexive bursts of movement. Microthrusters allow for superior maneuverability when in space.

Yeah, this is from a story I already have written in my mind but haven't actually expressed it properly yet.

Meanwhile here's what I've got so far. One page of dick jokes, starring the two characters I know best, with some attempts at mood and a hook to get a future reader to eagerly turn the page. Plus an opening page I'll try drawing once I have installed photoshop. (I sure picked the right week to get a new computer.)

Okay, so we don't know what this thing is yet. I barely know who these characters I'm supposed to write are. So I'm going to be making up a lot of things as I go along. Especially character designs, because next to a couple of huge dragons and things a bunch of regular people are going to look pretty much the same. Your input is important here, not only if you think your character's design, dialogue and/or actions could be improved, but also if you think your character is getting too much or too little screen time. That's a tricky thing to balance as a writer, and you should know if I'm not including your character it doesn't mean I don't like it, but that I don't know what to do with it as well as I know someone else's. You can help with that by describing what your character would do in a given scene; in other words write yourself.

You didn't think you could just fill out the the character form, sit back and become a star, I hope.

So anyway. The plan for now is to put something funny in at least every other panel. I have not decided if "Nuklear Powered Comics" or "Nuklear Forums Comic" would make a funnier abbreviation, but one of those should work as a title.

And this is how I write a script: Page 1:

We open on a full page shot of a beach house from the sea, at night. Raging seas in the foreground, lightning in the background and a single light burns in one window of the house, a small candle against the destructive forces of nature.

Dialogue:
Caption: The Nuklear Power Beach House
Caption: Whose inside, outside and surrounding changes depending on what's convenient for the writers and artists.
Caption: A house of peace, of harmony, of learning.
Caption: A beacon of life and meaning and sanity shining in the dull, tumultous darkness.
Word balloon with unidentified owner, coming from inside the house: Screw you guys, I'm going home!

Page 2:

Panel 1: A page wide panel, way too big for just the two people in it. We see the interior of the beach house, and it's full of wide open spaces. There's a wall in the background, and it's a boring-ass wall even with two windows showing the storm outside, plus a door that may or may not be rattling visibly from having been just slammed shut. There's also a floor with nothing on it except a small table with two chairs and our aforementioned people. These gentlepersons are Amake and Ballsweat "Dongs" Thrustington III, aka Crabsy Trickledick Spotsworth, aka Iggy. Amake is a spindly tall guy wearing jeans and a t-shirt with his name on it and no shoes with a ball-shaped head half covered in round, blank glasses. Iggy is a blank humanoid-shaped space – a pure human being. They're playing a game with cards with swear words written on them.

Dialogue:
Sound effect from the door: Doorslam
Amake: It's going to be weird without those guys here.
Iggy: At least we'll always have dicks.

Panel 2: Same as panel 1, except Shyria, the brown-eyed 21-meter-wingspan dragon walks by and thus covers at least a third of the right side of the panel with her head and part of her neck.

Dialogue:
Shyria: Hey, Trickledick, you actually have a penis? I thought that was just your name.
Iggy: I meant dicks as a conversational topic. That's what we do around here, talk about dicks, you know?

(Author's note: I'm apparently taking cues from the chat rather than the forum. But in my opinion the forum needs more dick talk anyway.)

Panel 3: Same again, except we now see Shyria's tailtip covering the left third of the panel. Also floating in from the right is akaSM, the mutable hallucination. For this panel, I'm thinking he's a foot-tall chubby purple winged fairy, glowing with magical light. With a sarcastic look on his face.

Dialogue:
akaSM: I heard you guys are worried about the place GETTING weird.

Panel 4: We crop out the vast background to break up what would otherwise be a monotonous page and to squeeze in three regular square-ish panels at the bottom. So we get in nice and tight on the game table and the now three players. akaSM is now a dog, in reference to the picture of dogs playing poker. It occurs to me he should stay primarily purple and glowing to identify him.

Dialogue:
Amake: I'm mostly worried it'll be a boring sort of weird.
Iggy: How are you holding the cards?

Panel 5: The game comes to an end as Iggy throws his cards down on the table and akaSM is a tiny octopus with a pink bow on its head.

Dialogue:
Iggy: Yahtzee!

Panel 6: We cut away to a dark basement where Doc ock rokc stands laughing with his head thrown back like a mad scientist. He is in fact wearing a lab coat and has six metallic Doctor Octopus arms instead of human arms. He has glasses that give him googly eyes (like an octopus), headphones and a nametag which is probably illegible at this distance. He stands in the background, partially obscured by a shadowy shape that is probably some kind of monster lying on an operating table. (I don't know any more than you do!)

Dialogue:
Doc ock: It's alive!
Caption: Meanwhile, only eight feet down. . .

Photoshop is frustrating me, if anyone's wondering what's going on. It's almost like they want you to pay for the thing or something.

Though that's not as frustrating or as damaging to the project as the puzzle I'm trying to assemble in my mind to make our characters fit together. There's just not enough to go by on most people and too many people for my comfort zone. It's probably going to take a lot of time and effort to get anything resembling a cohesive world built. If you like, you might help by telling a story involving your character and preferably as many of the others as you dare. Some of you probably understand each other not to mention the basic dynamics of social interaction better than I do, and I want to eat your brains and gain your knowledge.
