The news section of the forum isn't some sharks den where people tear into posts for no reason. If any posts are torn into it isn't because the people on this forum are jerks. The vast vast majority of posts that get torn to shreds in the news section are riddled with factual inconsistencies and logical fallacies this isn't because people are looking for any excuse to tear into or attack others, it's because posts in the news section objectively should be or at least attempt to be truthful and factual if a post states something that isn't true it both needs to and SHOULD be corrected after all the news section is supposed to be informed discussion of current events.

I know I'm going to regret entering this discussion, but hey what the hell let's do this.

I will concede that there are posts that get out of line and they should be called out. I've called one out myself recently. At the same time though, I don't think there's any reason to elevate bad opinions or bad arguments above what they are. If someone equates defending the rape of prisoners with trying to implement policies that would decrease the number of prisoner rapes, that's nothing but a bunch of bothsidez nonsense that should not be dignified with any degree of respect. What's more, to respond to bad behavior with politeness and kindness and such actually creates an incentive to continue that behavior, because you're showing that they can say plainly ignorant, insulting things and you'll still be super polite to them. (There was actually a recent study to this effect.)

Is the discussion sobforum fairly left-wing and hostile to right-wing views? Yes, but that's only an issue were both sides equally valid. Right-wing views are archaic and actively harmful to society on essentially every level. We're also willing to call out Democrats when they do stupid bullshit, too. It just so happens that the Republicans do much more awful bullshit, so the discussions are going to focus on what they do wrong more than what Democrats do wrong. We'd actually be very open to more threads about the faults of the Democratic party taking place, if such threads weren't almost always started with the point of proving, "See! Both sides are bad, so stop picking on Republicans so much!"

That's all that really needs to be said on the matter. The political leanings of the sobforum are what they are for a reason and any threads that try to broaden the discussion almost inescapably start from a false premise. We call out out of line behavior when it happens, but we don't treat harmful, insulting, or ignorant discussion as anything more than it is. The sobforum isn't perfect, but it's not nearly as bad as it's made out to be.

I can see that working for most people, but the name is something that actually has meaning to me. It's a name I use most often around the tubes but it was first a nickname used between me and my friends in real life (They have their odd names as well). Trolling like that is so pointless. Neither side is phased, everyone claims to be "winning" any arguments, and there's nothing to be gained. Furthermore any of you who did try to "troll him mercilessly" would merely be proving that he was worth your time. I say it's better to look back at these events with some amusement, if anything, and let them remain in the past.
