View Full Version : How about you stop doing this thing

I would appreciate it if you folks would stop telling me what my opinion is. There are a few reasons this would make me happy.

1. It's rude. Presuming to know what a person's opinion is or their reasoning for doing something is flat-out insulting.

2. You are always wrong. Not one of you has ever been correct when you have done this, and it contributes to #1 in making this event all the ruder.

3. Because every time it happens, I get frustrated. #1 and #2 show that I have pretty good reason to be frustrated. Yet, when I get frustrated and tired of dealing with it, because it's not nearly as rare an occurrence as it should be, the people who do this act like they have the moral high ground. This stacks on #1 as well and makes this unbelievably rude and aggravating.

I should not have to deal with this. I should not have to handle this "politely". That people believe I am obligated to both tolerate this and express my frustration in a manner that is ultimately far more polite than their behavior in this instance is laughable and stupid.

Stop doing it. Please. I am asking nicely that you stop doing something that you should not be doing. I am asking nicely that you folks stop making me deal with something I should not have to deal with. So, please, knock it off for both our sakes.

Lastly, if you somehow cannot manage to avoid doing this, though telling someone what their opinion or reasoning is shouldn't be that hard to avoid, please stop timing it on days during which I have not taken my anxiety medication. The last thing I need on top of having not taken my anxiety medication is people pulling some rude, insulting shit on top of that.

EDIT: And yes, telling someone, "Well, I don't think the thing you're saying is your opinion is because ______" would fit under this.

This thread brings me so many memories of That Generic Note that gets left by management at your retail job with dozens of employees. I would see such notes and be like, "hmm, does this apply to me? Who is this actually referring to?" And most folks at the job would know whom it refers to, but the management decided to make That Generic Note instead of just drilling those few employees, publicly or privately.

I've had a lot of managers like that. Do they teach this tactic in business school?

I'm just gonna jump in and note that this is a thing that we probably should stop doing to everybody in general, as it is pretty much a thing that all of us do to everybody a lot of the time.

And it's shitty. So yeah. Let's try to quit doing this, or if we have an impression of the point someone's trying to make and they disagree that it's an accurate assessment of their point, it might be a good idea to give them the benefit of the doubt there.

Here is a pro-tip people can use to avoid doing this if they don't think my stated opinion matches up with what they think it is: They can ask!

Asking is much less presumptive and makes a dialogue much easier to maintain.

"Hey, this doesn't really match up with this. Why?" is much less rude than "Nuh-uh, you don't think that because of this!"

Do you see how the former is much less frustrating than the latter? See! Take this easy step and we can avoid frustrating arguments in the future.

And you know what?

I'll even jump in and add real quick that I know I overreact to this! I handle it really badly! I should handle it better!

Kim

Basically what I'm saying is that I handle something I should never, ever have to deal with and you should never, ever make me have to deal with really poorly.

What we need to take away from this is that there are a lot of things we handle badly and should improve upon.

I would also like to say let's not ignore people just because they say something stupid. We are all guilty of this to either greater or lesser extents. I know I do it on a regular basis and sometimes I do it just to annoy or try to make people laugh (and fail more often than not).

Let's also stop trying to push people's buttons just to get a reaction as well too while we are at it.

Purely speculation. Where's your evidence? This'll never hold up in a court of lawl.

I have performed extensive psychoanalysis of Liz's posts and have arrived at said conclusion using my years of experience and relevant degrees.

You don't have degrees relevant to psychoanalysis.

Let's stop doing this thing where people randomly post terrifying .gifs that create new phobias I never even had. Thanks for the Owl Fear, NPF.

Incidentally, I think that one in the back might be eating the Insane Owl Possum.

I am now fully expecting one of us to make a new thread titled 'Why don't you stop doing that thing' with the owl gif in the first post.

'Why don't you all stop posting these creepy or just plain wrong gifs' will probably be the gist of the first post.

I've got this forum's number.

Dunno about that first bit. After a certain amount of fucktardery, I'd feel pretty justified in not paying attention to anything the offender says for a while.

Man if we stopped pushing each others buttons there would be like 3 posts on the forum as a whole- one going "Help me fix MY COMPUTATOR because I went to this totally legitimate site and now it covered in virus" one being Robin's MLPXPower Rangers slashfic and one being somebody asking when 8bit will update.
