If you are getting angry over something, step the hell back and come back to the argument when you cool down. Or don't come back at all. You don't have to "win" (the purpose of debates, by the way, is not to win) every argument on the Internet.

If someone is being an asshole, that is absolutely not an excuse to be an asshole right back. You are not eight years old and you can be the better person.

If you see something you don't like and your immediate response is to post something snarky or condescending, consider what purpose being a dick will serve.

If you are being a dick, own up to the fact. Do not try to hide behind justifications or the like. Apologize for it, move on, and try to be better in the future. That is part of being an adult.

If you see someone being a dick, reference three paragraphs back. Do not be a dick back to them. That leads absolutely nowhere and we should all fucking know that by now.

And so forth and so on.

I like most of the people on these forums. I suspect most of you do too! This forum has held together for years after it stopped serving any sort of real official purpose. I don't particularly want to see it turn to shit and die because we can't stop being assholes towards each other.

Relax, this post isn't one of the stupid ones. It's just I made that banner during the big dick joke inflation as a form of protest. It didn't work. I'm very sad now. The worth of my dicks can almost be described as negative.

Also, there's something weird about that banner, it kind of looks really shitty. I'm not gonna fix that, though.

Actually, in fairness to Sif that post was vague enough that I can see where he'd be able to read it that way (even if it's not what I meant).

Basically, what I'm saying is that it takes (at least) two to tango. If someone comes here being a gigantic asshole, it's not going to be a DRAMABOMB unless someone else decides to asshole it up too. Going off of what Gregness said (although I'm not sure if he would agree with what I'm about to say) but I just think a lot of it ends being needless drama because people are sometimes taking offense by misconstruing other people's words.

There were better examples in the past, but one that I can think of recently is the whole bukakke thing that I think Pip said. I agree that is bad word choice for the point he's trying to make that people keep piling on him, but to go so far as to say he's misogynistic because of it? Or the incident where another person said that peaceful argument was favorable over yelling at each other, one example is Martin Luther King. And then it seemed like that got misconstrued to "I can't believe that you would compare the Black Rights Movement to an internet argument!!" Or the instance where Liz got really offended where Azisien was being snide with her and said "Same to you babe". I mean I thought it was pretty clear that Azisien was just being snide, basically saying "Same to you buddy" but in a different way and to find misogyny in that is being overly sensitive in my opinion.

Like I get these people have used some bad word choices, but I think that these past few weeks have got everyone so wound up and sensitive that we haven't been able just let these small instances go in favor of focusing on the main issues of actual bigotry.

That's why I get the feeling that some people on this forum are afraid to post their thoughts on an issue. If their argument gets ripped to shreds, then so be it, it's a debate. But when their words get misconstrued and bigotry is seen where it pretty clearly wasn't mean to be read that way is frustrating as hell. I dunno, I guess it's just these past few weeks that have got us all wound up over these sensitive issues.

"Actual bigotry" is made up of small acts of bigotry. It's a cultural thing, not a villain we can just depose and be done with.

Like, ignoring the small things is how the big things keep happening. The small things keep the big things alive.

And, like, I don't know how else to put this but it doesn't really matter what you mean. What you actually say is what's important because that's all the people you're talking to get to see. What "pretty clearly wasn't meant to be read that way" may not be as clear as you think it is. Speaking carefully is not too much of a thing to ask.
