View Full Version : We Should Probably prepare for the Magna Storm that's coming soon

Soon December 21st is around the cornor. And a Magna Storm is coming fast and hard. What are some ways to sheild your SD cards/drives from Magnetic waves?

What do you plan on doing to prep for this?

I might try finding a bunch of network storage spaces for my vital project data.

A quick search for "magnetic storm" brought up a dozen instances this year alone wherein supposedly the strongest magnetic storms on record were hitting the earth. Each one seems to appear to have failed to destroy my hard drive, so...

Yeah it does seem like the storms may not affect our equipment all that much.

Still you can never be too careful.

The only thing that can shield against a magnetic field is a stronger magnetic field. Put your backups in a lead box and attach it to a car-lifting electromagnet found in the nearest junk yard. Alternatively, set off a cascade of nuclear explosions on top of your backups throughout the day of storms. Also alternatively, look into how to build an ion plasma fueled rocket with an electromagnetic container for the plasma. You can even skip the whole engine part and just focus on the container. You may need to hijack a nuclear power plant to power it, but it'd probably work unlike those other things I said.

Look up the Meissner effect or Mu metal or if the field is varying fast enough the faraday cage.

I like how 12/21/12 has been reduced from Knowing-level destruction down to "your hard drive is totally going to get erased, dude. That is going to be extremely inconvenient."

And then immediately afterwards it's going to be reduced again, to Millenium Bug levels of damage.

I never got Y2K. Even at the age of 14 i knew enough about computers to realize that it doesn't really care if its year 00 since to it thats just what comes after 99. Plus what kind of idiotic nation would make it possible for a glitch or virus to launch nukes.

On topic of magnetic storms, the real danger of them is the energy not the magnetic waves themselves. Worst case scenario is our electrical grid is nuked (something we could avoid by just not having them off at the time), then we just replace the transformers and get back to business.

HDD and SSD aren't so fragile or to be more exact if its enough magnetic energy to punch through the magnetosphere, the atmosphere, walls of your house, computer case, and the drives shell and still have enough energy to wipe the data we have MUCH bigger concerns. Heck I think organic life would have trouble surviving something that powerful.

Look, all I know is that if a mega magnetic storm or something transforms our world into a post-apocalyptic dystopia, then I wanna be one of the super badass crimefighting vigilantes that inevitably spring up in such environments, if tv and film are to be believed.

I'll be hiring teammates to join me, so make sure you have your own badass costume and marketable nickname/catchphrase/gimmick ready if you want to do well in the auditions.

Yes! You can call me The Besserwisser. I'll be the scruffy-looking guy wearing nothing but a hardhat and a sign that says I TOLD YOU SO, beating on mutant looters with dictionaries and yardsticks. My catchphrase shall be "Actually. . .", followed by a most likely inaccurate pedantic observation. I'll be the guy using my food rations to buy friends in the group and being really happy that anyone wants to hang out with me. Am I in or am I in?

You can kinda thank Hollywood and maybe AC3 for that.

Magus
11-14-2012, 07:32 PM
Well I admit when the best actor Hollywood could find to get fake-worked-up about it was John Cusack, it was probably time to throw in the towel and look forward to the next pseudo-apocalyptic prediction.

All that porn, gone in an instant. My god, they'd go a insane if that happens.

I don't think the loss of all the porn would be that big of a problem though really. I mean, rules 34 and 35 would still be in effect, so it'll all get recreated pretty quick.

No, the real blow to nerds would be all the game saves/online achievements being erased. All those epic loots, all that time spent grinding, all those perfect KDRs, all gone.

Magus
11-16-2012, 01:15 PM
I used to back up stuff on discs, then I realized that I could just easily download it again if I ever felt like watching it again, or maybe just actually go ahead and buy the DVD set now. I never did either.

RobinStarwing

I could got back to TV easily.

As for why this could be worrisome...the Magnetic Field of the Earth that protects our planet is weakening and possibly even preparing for it's first pole reversal in 800,000+ years. They usually happen every 300,000 years.

Magus

from what I have seen there is absolutely zero evidence this will happen any time soon. Yes there is evidence it happens, but on a geological scale the chances of us seeing anything like that happening in our lifetime is slim

This is why Pyros makes DVD backups of everything, that way the EMP effect of Raiden in a happy mood doesn't erase all my everything.

If Magneto is behind everything, just tell the Red Skull what he's planning, and then tell Mageneto that the Red Skull has plans to make use of Magneto's plans, and this will resolve everything, but will likely result in the death of an X-man. Preferably Cyclops.

Sorry folks, but while the discs would probably survive an emp of sorts, the firmware on the devices that read 'em would get FUBAR'd.

Best enjoy reading them papery reading things.

I don't know why everyone is pinning this on Magneto, or why they're so scared of him all of a sudden. I mean, the guy should have already taken over the earth long, long ago, what with his level of power. The fact that he hasn't means he's probably a pretty incompetent villain.

Personally I'm more concerned about Apocalypse waking up again.

There is evidence of how it happens and scientists are seeing the magnetic field weakening; severely in an area over the south Atlantic as well as the magnetic field poles migrating at a quicker rate. Couple this with the Sun entering one of it's more active times. There is also that it is happen at the same time of an alignment with the Galactic Core and the completion of a Precession.

I don't think anything will happen either but let us all note the currently largest CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) that affected the Earth. The Solar Storm of 1859. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859)

Marelo
11-18-2012, 04:19 PM
Robin, none of those things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon#Galactic_alignment) mean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon#Precession) anything (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon#Geomagnetic_reversal) ominous at all, and some of them don't mean anything sensible, let alone ominous.

I dunno, you usually can't go wrong by assuming Robin isn't funny.

Yes you can. You can also go left, right, up, down, top, bottom, strange, charm, forwards, backwards, sideways, and pivot.

You can also go left foot in, left foot out, left foot in, and shake it all about.

...

Okay, enough silly, back on topic.

As I said, I don't buy something will happen but mainly because the Universe does not want us to see it coming. 2012 has become it's own trope and meme hence won't happen.

However, a Solar Storm similar to the 1859 event can always happen. It's just a matter of when. Even the articles linked mentioned what could happen if it hit today.
