View Full Version : Your New Year Resolution

Well 2012 is drawing to a close. The folks that spent millions on bomb shelters down in the southern/western part of the US are shitting bricks from the whole end of the world thing being another bad joke at best.

...true story I am not kidding.

And as 2013 is only less then a week away. It's time to think about our New Year's resolution. You know that thing people claim they'll do that only a small percent will actually follow through with.

Personally my New Year's resolution is to try and attempt texturing again. And to stop pretending to be any smarter then your average Sonic Fanfic writer (no offense intended).

What's your New Year's Resolution? What do you have planned. Also I posted this a few days early because most of us will likely be with family around that time anyway. And seeing as this is NPF, this can end up being a fun discussion. (honestly I miss some of the crazy fun/strange shit that use to go on here in the general forum)

This one's new year's resolution: stop making resolutions and just get shit done.

Also, learn Python.

This one's new year's resolution: stop making resolutions and just get shit done.

Also, learn Python.

How many object oriented languages do you know already? Because really after the first learning a new one is mostly about syntax with maybe a few small tweaks which should take like a couple of days to a week of really concerted effort. If you're coming mainly from procedural programming it might be slightly harder as you have to learn object oriented programing concepts.

Personally, I need to save enough money to move out of where I'm at and closer to my work/school. Although commuting as a graduate student isn't so terrible. I also need to finish up C++, pick up a Python book myself, learn Php, learn MySql, update myself to html 5, learn the Windows API, and finally start work on doing some of my own computational science. I suppose I should also improve my understanding of fortran, actually practice a bit more of java than I currently have, and get a better handle on the numerical methods for solving the generalized eigenvalue problem as well as finishing up working through that textbook on matrix quantum mechanics.

Man I've got a lot more I need to do than I thought and I even forgot about the like 3 papers my advisor wants me to write so I can get more publications.

I'm not aiming to go gung-ho learn the ins and outs of it, really. Mostly for scripting purposes for day to day activities and homebrew tools. I've graduated this last quarter and a lot of the IT positions I'm seeing are asking for languages like pearl, which I'm passably familiar with, or python and the like.

Plus I picked up a book that focuses on using Python for forensics analysis, penetrations testing, and other network security type stuff which I've taken quite the shining to.

Seems like you could probably get as familiar as you need to be with python over a long week. It took me like three days to become familiar enough with fortran to write rudimentary code and to translate some code I was given into a more modern language.

You reminded me that I wanted to learn perl, I assume you meant perl since pearl is an entirely different language and I don't think quite as useful for IT work, at some point as well. I really also need a better understanding of shell scripting as well.

Man for some reason I just really like collecting programing languages. I have a book that goes through building a mordern computer from basic logic gates to building a high level language and the associated compiler that I should totally make time for so that I can learn to program in assembly.

I resolve to not work on my novel for even a single day. Because I'm a masochist.

More money, more schooling. Or more specifically, remain employed in some capacity to the end of the year without flunking any classes between now and then.

Also, take more time to practice artwork.

Find something I have a passion for.

I feel the need to have something that keep me going. Something that will bring me joy. I have tried thousands of things and have introduced some people to things that have become their passions... However I have none of my own. These failed passions have become silly side hobbies and distractions...andThis "hobby collection" of mine is down right depressing.

Get a new job.

Move out/ be more independent.

Figure out what I am supposed to do with my life. Holy shit you guys there are job openings in an animation studio and a game development studio that I might actually qualify for holy shit you guys holy shit.

I don't REALLY meet all of the qualifications the animation studio is asking for, whereas I have a better chance of getting in with the video game dev, but the game place is down in California and I don't know if I want to move that far away. It's located in a super-high-rent area and I doubt the entry level pay for the job would actually let me LIVE there. (I'm also in the market for a new car so I'll have car payments to make in addition to rent/utilities/food/prescriptions/etc).

Still, the job sounds pretty damn magical. If I can work up the courage, I might apply for both. I've actually been feeling really down lately about my career future (and career PRESENT, holy shit I'm really hating this job right now; you have no idea) so this is actually quite uplifting news for me, downsides and improbability of me getting hired notwithstanding.
