View Full Version : "I Hate YouTube Comments" or "So That Moon Landing There Is Probably Totes Real"

So I'm on summer break. So I've been staying up later and later as I begin to sleep in more and more. Sue me. (Get Snake on that or something.)

I recently watched a few Mythbusters clips on the YouTubes about the moon landing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMBCfuKs9i8) and hoaxes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5taIxlNA_Lw) and what not (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wym04J_3Ls0), and the videos are inundated with comments from people like "NaziNasa:"

Which keeps with the sterling reputation that most YouTube commentators have, but with about eighty thousand different arguments going on at once, each with their own particular brand of spelling errors, racism, and lewd comments about ones mother, I thought we could talk about it before I start spewing profanity in frustration.

Next people won't believe that the holocaust happened or something.

Don't break the rules Seil... it's for your own good man...

I mean, aside from the maaaaassive stupid bubble that envelops a lot of the kiddies that post these comments and asinine ideas, there are those even sadder ones that do it on purpose... "ironically"... they post fake opinions and fabricated thoughts with the sole purpose of getting attention. THey get absolutely NOTHING out of it aside from some twisted personal satisfaction of arguing a point they don't believe in with a person they never met and most likely never will...

Imagine THAT sad life...

I used to have a friend who believed in the moon landing conspiracy. Even though he couldn't say how many of the moon landings were faked. He also believes the zionist conspiracy faked the Holocaust and control all the world's economy and media, except for the racist party's blog network. I've long wanted to be able to tell him and his allies that every time they open their mouths I can hear the unspoken message of "Please affirm my belief that I'm smarter than most people because I take whatever the sheeple are told and assume the opposite to be true".

I do think that's the problem, even if it's just anecdotal evidence: Deep-seated insecurity and control issues combined with a complete absence of knowledge make people buy into conspiracy theories because it lets them feel they're more clever than you.

And then of course Youtube comments get involved.

Unfortunately for us all that ship has long since sailed, then sunk, then been denied and believed to have been caused by aliens from the bermuda triangle.

I saw one today on a lets play video for a sci-fi puzzle game wherein the commenter in question, completely unprovoked and without reason, started calling the british guy playing the game a fag and proclaiming how great nasa is and why it makes america the greatest country in the world.

I mean, literally no reason for it, he just felt like slandering an entire country and introducing a topic nobody else was talking about and was only vaguely related to the subject matter he was commenting on. The mind boggles.

NaziNasa

I find his lack of creativity in naming more offensive than his Internet-standard fuckwittery. What, was Nazi Aeronautics and Space Administration taken? At least go for the low-hanging fruit.

Ah youtube, one of the worst comment sections I've ever seen so far. An endless sea of misinformation, false claims, conspiracy theories, and trolling that makes me sad that the world didn't end in 2012, every time I stray too far away from the few decent fandoms left on there.

In some ways, the internet really is a hell on earth.

At least with Youtube, when one uploads a video there's the option to disable commenting.

I don't watch any other Youtube video without keeping this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9hNS7JTbMQ) on in the background, in case I scroll down by accident.

Of course if I scroll down on THAT I then have to fire up the Four Kings theme for extra doom, and then after that it gets too meta and I need to lie down.

It's funny how big that difference is. A forum typically has a bunch of discussions sorted by topic, whereas any other given site has a bunch of things sorted by topics that contain their own individual discussions, and that's all it takes for comments to go from interesting to crap. There's probably some community identification stuff to study there.

If you think Youtube comments are bad, look at CNN comments sometime...especially on something involving politics or a foreign country.

When it comes to YouTube, News Sites, Politics and places like Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook, just remember one thing:

I think thats part of it, but I also think they subconsciously take comfort in it. People like to think there is some group of dicks behind all the worlds troubles. That somehow the majority of the world can be completely and perpetually deceived and if some how if the lies were exposed the world would be a wonderful utopia of gumdrops and rainbows.

Because the real truth, the world is a chaotic uncontrollable system of primarily good people suffering from the whims of resource distribution and inherent chaos of the world. That the elite aren't privileged few with access to secrete knowledge and what you think is their masterful strokes of dominance is either ambivalence or their own frantic desperation to try and keep their station because they know their control is an illusion and they cant stop the flow of the world.

You have parents. That are aware of the existence of Youtube. And actually USE it?

Along with being able to use a web browser that's NOT Internet Explorer, combined with addons.

You've got that wrong Magus. My father would say it in a much posher, stuffy British accent, with liberal usage of "bloody". (if you think I'm bad in that regard, you really should meet him)

He really does need my help on a daily basis to do simple things like, say, moving a Word document from one folder to another. I've had to explain to him at least eight times so far that the progress bar on loading an internet page is not really representative of anything, especially when the internet is playing Silly Buggers.
"But it's almost full."
And explaining how to do a backup from his hard drive to a USB stick takes hours, quite literally. And I have to do this every time.

If he ever gets a hold of Windows 8 I will suffer violent convulsions and DIE.

I'll let the daughter part slide, though.

This is such a white middle class privilege post, isn't it? Please kill me now.

Ro, you should show your dad how Left with a box of tablets the children of an illiterate Ethiopian village taught themselves to hack the things in five months (http://www.technologyreview.com/news/506466/given-tablets-but-no-teachers-ethiopian-children-teach-themselves/). You know, to make his head explode and stuff.

It kinda makes my head explode.

I'm quite honestly surprised that no one is supporting the claim that we didn't land on the moon. Not that we wouldn't discuss it and most likely arrive at the point that we did, I'm just wondering why the opposing view isn't given any credence.

If you're impressed by that, you might be amazed by the use of torrents and NoScript as well.

If I get a call about something being wrong with a computer, there's also a good amount of legwork regarding looking into the problem and troubleshooting done already. My family's been willing to learn over the years, and it shows.
