...I show up but this time not with any of my usual antics. I am putting out a request for help.

What am I asking? Well if you have not been paying attention to the TV on Discovery Channel or the Internet this past week...just Google "Megalodon Shark Week" to get filled in on what is going on.

I haven't watched much of the program but what I did see bothered me greatly to see this on Discovery. What I want to know with help and to show my mother (who I think might be buying some of the program) is the seperation of what is Fact and what is Fiction.

Here is what I need to get sorted out.

1. Is there any sightings of Giant Sharks?

2. Are any of these sightings more prevalent during Right Whale Migrations?

3. Are any of these obvious mis-identifications of Cow Sharks, Basking Sharks, really large Great Whites, or other large sharks? I doubt a Whale Shark would be that hard to identify but people are idiots...

4. Who is truly an expert in the fields needed and who is an actor on the program?

5. Was what they tagged CGI or real?

NPF do not fail me!

EDIT: I did not put this in Media because I didn't think it was Media-worthy to discuss what is probably a fake Documentary.

EDIT2: Question #6. Is it at all likely that Megalodon has survived to the Modern age or at least some related species that is nearly as large?

EDIT3: Watching the program now. So far, I come up empty for searches on Collin Drake and the Charter Boat sinking they are referencing at the start. However, Brian McFarlane exists as do legends of a Great White so large his nickname is "The Submarine".

It's all bunk we're in bigfoot territory.

As a tip Robin anything like this if it's real, people will be losing their everloving shit over it in science magazines and journals and their corresponding websites and for something as big as Megalodon being found it would make a fair chunk of major new sites. So a quick google search will tell you, if a bunch* of reputable news sites and major journals are talking bout it, then good, if it's just entertainment documentary stuff then well yeah.

* You'll want multiple lone journalists fucking up ain't uncommon.

Oh I know this. I just want help seperating the bunk from the not bunk.

To be fair, we haven't really settled the UFO question.

It's true, there are some objects in the air that we don't identify, sometimes. The obvious implication of UFO = ET spacecraft seems pretty bunk at this point.

No Azi they just teched up their cloaking fields LOL.

Not so much when you consider that it is proven one could build a Warp Drive given enough of a technology base to make a power source to generate Vacuum Energy.

No, Robin. The UFO thing isn't "Can anyone ever reach us here?" It's "Have we been consistently visited by beings from another planet and have they been flying over us in spacecraft" and the answer is no. They have not.

Everything in the Megalodon show that was about what they used to be like was correct. Usually using the liberal numbers for size estimates I imagine, but correct.
Anything that implied they are still alive was bunk. There was a pretty harsh outcry by fans of Discovery for going the way of Ancient Aliens on that sort of malarky. Shark week had jumped the shark, they said.

The fact that you had to create a thread in order to "get the facts straight" or whatever about ancient sharks and whether or not they exist today suggests that your mother wasn't the [only] one that didn't get it.

Don't be silly. UFOs are really space ghosts, and ghosts don't show up on camera.

Except when they do, of course. Either way, their existence is proven.

Oh I got the program was a pile of bullshit and my mother revealed to me she had a similar opinion too but the idea is worth considering or maybe the idea that there is an unknown species of Giant shark in the oceans. I also wanted to maybe explain the myths and legends from different cultures of such beasts.

Why would aliens want to come to this backwater shit hole of a planet anyway? That's like me driving 10 miles down the road to go and visit an ant hill.

Pyros loved that book about the giant fish that once ate ancient fish dinosaurs that came from the deep to vaguely menace people and then ate that one guy who survived inside it enough to dig his way out after he made it explode or something. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meg:_A_Novel_of_Deep_Terror)

Now get me a story about a giant Thundurducken bird that lowers out of the high and used to eat ancient bird dinosaurs and conveniently is exploded into a rain of delicious KFC styled drumsticks and kieve filled chicken breasts, and you can has PYras's money.

I think I will elaborate. When I had originally posted this thread, I had not watched the program yet. I wanted help going in to separate the bullshit from the facts and explore the idea a little more. Yes, it could be possible I think (not likely but I never will say something is impossible) that we could have a relative of Megalodon that lives in the very deep sea or another previously unknown large Shark living down there. I also think it could be just as likely if not more so we are looking at misidentification of known large Sharks.

Now that I've watched the program...I have to say that Discovery REALLY f-ed up. While the idea is rather interesting to think about...they probably did more harm then good. >_<
