View Full Version : "The Good News Thread" or "This Thread Is All About Good News Stories"
So, in order to kick anxiety's ass, here's a thread all about the good things that are happening everywhere. About the good people who are being good. About good stuff.
Please, feel free to add your own. Let's call it like the other Picture/Interesting threads and keep it to one story (and related media) per post.
I'm going to break that rule in the first post with a few videos - fuck the police down with authority!

Apparently not a huge breakthrough or anything, but it's just one pill as opposed to like twenty, the side effects won't kill you quite as fast as some medicines, and it reduces the amount of virus in your body to untraceable levels in unprecedented amounts of subjects. It's just funny cause the company that invented it is called Gilead. And also we're beating AIDS.

In other news, Occupy Wall Street has broken money itself (http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/nov/13/occupy-wall-st-debt-buying-heart-capitalism).
It turns out you can buy debt for 5% of its value, just like that. Why didn't everyone know that? It's clearly a loophole begging for abuse. If Alice loans Bob a dollar, Charlie can borrow the dollar from Bob to buy Bob's debt from Alice for 5 cents and then write the debt off; then they repeat this manouver 100 times, multiplying their money until Alice, Bob and Charlie each have a credit of $31.60. Or, like the Strike Debt group has done, you can raise 600 000 dollars and cancel debts worth 15 million dollars for 2 693 people.
The cracks are showing. The chains are breaking. We may free ourselves from the slavery of money in our lifetime.

That's not really how it worked.
You're able to buy the debt for that low because it's coming from people who are likely not to be able to pay the debt off. The banks who own it want to make SOMETHING back for the money that they lost by loaning it to the person, so they unload the debt onto some other sucker for 5%, and the other person does what they will with the debt to try to make their money back (Or in the OWS case, forgive the debtors).
If Charlie could buy Bob's debt from Alice for so cheap, it's because the debt wasn't getting paid off, and you can bet that Alice is not going to loan Bob any more money.

Clearly I'm not an economist. But I bet if Alice in this scenario was a bank she could set the terms for selling her loans more at her discretion if you see what I mean. The point is that moneylending is bullshit and when we start seeing through that I'm curious what's going to happen to the economy.
Meanwhile, I'm happy to report it seems my local newspaper has gotten in the spirit of reporting good news, or at least reporting them much more nicely than they could if they wanted to grab reader attention by the tried and true doctrine of negative spin. Today's headline says "386 children saved in child porn bust".

No.
Okay, here's how it works.
You have a good job, and you want a house, so you go to the bank and take out a loan for 100,000 dollars, as you are currently making 5,000 a month, and the payments are ~1000 a month at 2.75% APR. You can totally afford this and will have your house paid off in about 10 yrs.
Awesome for everyone. The bank gets about 30 grand more than they lent you, you get a house, and at 5,000 a month that $1000 isn't a big thing.
However, five years down the road you've still got around 50k to pay off and your company just eliminated your position. You now end up working part time at a fast food place (after a year of unemployment), for a bit over minimum wage raking in about 600 a month. You refinance down to about $200 a month payments, and still miss those.
It's now going to take another 25 years to pay it back WITHOUT interest. With interest. . . well you're probably going to die first. Not only that, but you're missing payments left and right, and you're probably going to have to file for bankruptcy.
Your bank realizes this, notices that you're no longer living in your nice house, have had to sell your nice car, etc. You've got very little of worth.
They'd be lucky to get $2,500 out of you. So their solution is to try to sell your debt for anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000, and make it somebody else's problem. Maybe the people who buy it can get $5,100 out of you, maybe they break even, maybe they come up short. From the bank's perspective, they're probably coming up short (unless they forgive a large portion of your debt so they can refinance it down to an affordable amount and interest rate that ends with them making a profit, and there are companies that do just this).
Now, the reason a bank wouldn't just set the sale price at 5% and lend to another bank and back and forth?
Well, firstly, because that money didn't just appear out of nowhere. Banks can't print money, and the government isn't going to give them a bunch.
Here's what would ACTUALLY happen if they did that:
Bob is broke.
Alice has a dollar.
Charlie is broke.
Bob borrows a dollar from Alice. Charlie borrows a dollar from Bob, and buys Bob's debt from Alice for 5 cents.
Alice now has 5 cents, Charlie has 95 cents, Bob has nothing.
Alice then buys Charlie's debt for 5 cents.
Alice now has 0 cents, Charlie has 95 cents, and Bob has 5 cents.
Notice how no wealth was actually created?
Let's say Bob and Charlie are broke but Alice has $10.
Bob borrows a dollar from Alice, Charlie borrows a dollar from Bob and buys Bob's debt from Alice for 5 cents.
Charlie has 95 cents.
Bob is Broke.
Alice has $9.95.
Alice buy's charlie's debt and. . .
Charlie has 95 cents.
Bob has 5 cents.
Alice has $9.90
So they repeat the above, Alice -> Bob -> Charlie buys debt, and then Alice buys debt.
Charlie now has $1.90
Bob has 10 cents.
Alice has $8.00
Etc. etc. on into infinity.
Second, notice what is happening to Alice's money? It's disappearing.
A bank attempting to run with this would just result in the bank who had the most money losing money/profits. It'd be terrible business for them.
Thirdly, forgiving debt never, ever, creates a money surplus. You can't get a credit of 30 dollars, because you can only be forgiven for what you borrowed from someone else. The most you can get from forgiving a debt is breaking even.
Bob borrows a dollar from Alice, Charlie borrows the dollar from Bob, buys the debt and forgives it. . . That doesn't mean that Bob made a dollar. It just means that Bob no longer owes Alice (or Charlie) money.

No shit you can't create money out of nothing but moving money around. The idea is to create the illusion of money, credibility, with which you can buy stuff that you can't actually afford. Which doesn't actually work in the long term. Which shows capitalism for the shortsighted fantasy it is. I know I'm not explaining myself very well but it's like we're speaking different languages here. How about we talk about what the Strike Debt group is doing that is news instead of the thing I made up.

Money isn't an illusion, its a standardized unit of measurement for a bartering system.

While I do like to call money an illusion, comparable for instance to meters, another unit of measurement that only works as long as we agree that it exists, this isn't a question of semantics. An illusion of money is an illusion of money. Pretending to be rich in order to scam people is a thing that happens.

If a man trades 100grams of silver for 10grams of silver that has been worked into jewelry he has not been scammed. He has compensated the other person for the time and skill he applied to the material which has increased its value.
Banks work by trading currency for risk. Interest is determined by a very complex mathematical calculation that determines the percentage chance the lendee will fail to repay the debt. Compounded by the time the bank will be short that money
A simple example. If I loan you 100 dollars and there is a 90% chance you will pay me back than a repayment 110 is fair.

Not sure about this but in similar news out in Seattle the residents of the Seatac area who all work at the airport there are voting to raise the minimum wage of their area to 15 dollars so the airport would be forced to pay them all 15 dollars an hour to operate their various businesses (McDonald's, etc.)
THAT is a good idea that seems like it could work in a lot of areas. In many places businesses can move if they feel they are "losing money" by having to pay a higher minimum wage, but McDonald's or whoever isn't going to shut down an airport restaurant in a huge airport like that. And the airport certainly isn't going to move, so hopefully this means more money for baggage handlers and such as well.
http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/SeaTac-minimum-wage-measure-up-by-46-votes-4988258.php
SEATAC, Wash. (AP) — An initiative that seeks to establish a $15 minimum wage for many workers in SeaTac is leading by 46 votes.
After Saturday's ballot drop, the measure was passing with 2,936 "yes" votes compared to 2,890 "no" votes.
On election night, the initiative was leading by a 261-vote margin — a decent gap in a race that's likely to draw maybe 6,000 total votes.
Washington has the nation's highest state minimum wage at $9.19 an hour; the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.

So there was this guy named Fred Stobaugh entered a song contest with a song he wrote to his wife, who had passed away. It's a pretty great song, and if you buy it on iTunes, you can help to support Fred. His first new purchase with the proceeds? He says he's going to buy new hearing aids.
Anyway, it reminded me of an interview with Joy Williams of The Civil Wars on CBC, and she drew attention to a letter written by Richard Feynman - a famous scientist - that he had written to his wife:
(Source: Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman; Image: Richard Feynman, via.)
October 17, 1946
D’Arline,
I adore you, sweetheart.
I know how much you like to hear that — but I don't only write it because you like it — I write it because it makes me warm all over inside to write it to you.
It is such a terribly long time since I last wrote to you — almost two years but I know you'll excuse me because you understand how I am, stubborn and realistic; and I thought there was no sense to writing.
But now I know my darling wife that it is right to do what I have delayed in doing, and that I have done so much in the past. I want to tell you I love you. I want to love you. I always will love you.
I find it hard to understand in my mind what it means to love you after you are dead — but I still want to comfort and take care of you — and I want you to love me and care for me. I want to have problems to discuss with you — I want to do little projects with you. I never thought until just now that we can do that. What should we do. We started to learn to make clothes together — or learn Chinese — or getting a movie projector. Can't I do something now? No. I am alone without you and you were the "idea-woman" and general instigator of all our wild adventures.
When you were sick you worried because you could not give me something that you wanted to and thought I needed. You needn’t have worried. Just as I told you then there was no real need because I loved you in so many ways so much. And now it is clearly even more true — you can give me nothing now yet I love you so that you stand in my way of loving anyone else — but I want you to stand there. You, dead, are so much better than anyone else alive.
I know you will assure me that I am foolish and that you want me to have full happiness and don't want to be in my way. I'll bet you are surprised that I don't even have a girlfriend (except you, sweetheart) after two years. But you can't help it, darling, nor can I — I don't understand it, for I have met many girls and very nice ones and I don't want to remain alone — but in two or three meetings they all seem ashes. You only are left to me. You are real.
My darling wife, I do adore you.
I love my wife. My wife is dead.
Rich.

Sure compared to other popes or most other public figures in general this pope is clearly an improvement. Liberation theology, which seems to have influenced him some, is mostly neat stuff, certainly as far as more radical interpretations of christianity go. But I can't really bring myself to get too fond of a dude who's the patriarch of an overall oppressive global institution. Especially since despite all the talk about more equal distribution of wealth, the Vatican is sitting on massive amounts of wealth itself.

Its not radical, its accurate. The religion was not about rejecting certain groups or aggressive conversion campaigns or accumulating wealth. Much of that was adopted during the middle ages thanks to a string of corrupt members of the church which itself was caused by said feudal system turning the church into a political entity.
The actual doctrine is about acceptance and pacifism. This is what happens when someone actually reads the freakin book instead of pandering to hate groups

Radical in my vocabulary is a good thing. I refuse to use it in the sense as it is often used in the mainstream, basically as a synonym for "extremist". In case you thought I was criticizing liberation theology for being too radical.
But yeah, I'm sure there's a ton to back up the claim that liberation theology is actually closer to the real essence if christianity. Personally, I don't really care wether it's a radical interpretation or "the correct one". It's a better and more humane interpretation, and that's enough for me.

hey
hey seil
here is a good news thing which I just read (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22751415), about the Finnish state-provided baby starter kit:
For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.
It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life.
The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.
It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress.
With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby's first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box's four cardboard walls.
Mothers have a choice between taking the box, or a cash grant, currently set at 140 euros, but 95% opt for the box as it's worth much more.
The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949.
"Not only was it offered to all mothers-to-be but new legislation meant in order to get the grant, or maternity box, they had to visit a doctor or municipal pre-natal clinic before their fourth month of pregnancy," says Heidi Liesivesi, who works at Kela - the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.
So the box provided mothers with what they needed to look after their baby, but it also helped steer pregnant women into the arms of the doctors and nurses of Finland's nascent welfare state.
In the 1930s Finland was a poor country and infant mortality was high - 65 out of 1,000 babies died. But the figures improved rapidly in the decades that followed.
Mika Gissler, a professor at the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki, gives several reasons for this - the maternity box and pre-natal care for all women in the 1940s, followed in the 60s by a national health insurance system and the central hospital network.
At 75 years old, the box is now an established part of the Finnish rite of passage towards motherhood, uniting generations of women.
Reija Klemetti, a 49-year-old from Helsinki, remembers going to the post office to collect a box for one of her six children.
"It was lovely and exciting to get it and somehow the first promise to the baby," she says. "My mum, friends and relatives were all eager to see what kind of things were inside and what colours they'd chosen for that year."
Her mother-in-law, aged 78, relied heavily on the box when she had the first of her four children in the 60s. At that point she had little idea what she would need, but it was all provided.
More recently, Klemetti's daughter Solja, aged 23, shared the sense of excitement that her mother had once experienced, when she took possession of the "first substantial thing" prior to the baby itself. She now has two young children.
"It's easy to know what year babies were born in, because the clothing in the box changes a little every year. It's nice to compare and think, 'Ah that kid was born in the same year as mine'," says Titta Vayrynen, a 35-year-old mother with two young boys.
For some families, the contents of the box would be unaffordable if they were not free of charge, though for Vayrynen, it was more a question of saving time than money.
She was working long hours when pregnant with her first child, and was glad to be spared the effort of comparing prices and going out shopping.
"There was a recent report saying that Finnish mums are the happiest in the world, and the box was one thing that came to my mind. We are very well taken care of, even now when some public services have been cut down a little," she says.
When she had her second boy, Ilmari, Vayrynen opted for the cash grant instead of the box and just re-used the clothes worn by her first, Aarni.
A boy can pass on clothes to a girl too, and vice versa, because the colours are deliberately gender-neutral.
The contents of the box have changed a good deal over the years, reflecting changing times.
During the 30s and 40s, it contained fabric because mothers were accustomed to making the baby's clothes.
But during World War II, flannel and plain-weave cotton were needed by the Defence Ministry, so some of the material was replaced by paper bed sheets and swaddling cloth.
The 50s saw an increase in the number of ready-made clothes, and in the 60s and 70s these began to be made from new stretchy fabrics.
In 1968 a sleeping bag appeared, and the following year disposable nappies featured for the first time.
Not for long. At the turn of the century, the cloth nappies were back in and the disposable variety were out, having fallen out of favour on environmental grounds.
Encouraging good parenting has been part of the maternity box policy all along.
"Babies used to sleep in the same bed as their parents and it was recommended that they stop," says Panu Pulma, professor in Finnish and Nordic History at the University of Helsinki. "Including the box as a bed meant people started to let their babies sleep separately from them."
At a certain point, baby bottles and dummies were removed to promote breastfeeding.
"One of the main goals of the whole system was to get women to breastfeed more," Pulma says. And, he adds, "It's happened."
He also thinks including a picture book has had a positive effect, encouraging children to handle books, and, one day, to read.
And in addition to all this, Pulma says, the box is a symbol. A symbol of the idea of equality, and of the importance of children.

Target employee in NC teaches teen how to tie a tie before an interview. (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/02/06/north-carolina-target-tie-worker/22971617/)
The boy, there ahead of a job interview, stopped by to pick up a clip-on tie. What could have been a hiccup in his day turned into a warm moment now seen by thousands of people.
The store only sells regular ties, so the employee stopped what he was doing and gave him a quick lesson. Audrey then saw them practice handshakes and interview questions before the teen went on his way. Some might call it Southern manners. Others would say it's just plain humanity.
"As the kid exited the store, a bunch of supportive Target team members cheered him on!" she wrote on the Facebook page.
The photo, as of this writing, has more than 40,000 likes and almost 3,000 shares.
"I was in Target while the employees were helping this young man," another shopper, Burnita Matthews, commented on the photo. "This picture cannot convey the warmth and kindness in their voices as they worked with him."
