View Full Version : "Coca-Cola Has 'America The Beautiful' Sung In Commercial" or "Racists Flip Out"
Original Link (http://publicshaming.tumblr.com/post/75447787843/speak-english-racist-revolt-as-coca-cola-airs)
So I guess this thread can go hand in hand with my other "Racists are fucking stupid and awful." (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showthread.php?t=43033&highlight=davuluri)
The controversy is that Coca-Cola had an ad that ran during the Super Bowl where "America The Beautiful" was sung in a bunch of different languages.
Apparently that's un-American because the only language that should be spoken in 'Murica is English.
...Is there a parody song out yet called "America The Racist?"

Wow they sure don't know much if anything about our country huh. lol
Wow as a Black man of native american blood, reading those comments actually caused me physical pain for a minute there. Hard to believe that racists still exist sometimes.

If racists had reasonable complaints, they wouldn't be racists in the first place. When you're dealing with people who think that if a tree falls in the forest then the forest itself is dangerous and must be kept apart from people so the trees don't fall on us, it shouldn't be surprising if they reach far and wide to come up with anti-wood arguments.

Actually "racists are gonna shit themselves at this" was one of the first things I thought when I looked at that commercial.

One of my first thought for the commercial, "Hey, that's pretty cool."
My thoughts after the commercial and racism, "Dude, they're singing OUR song in THEIR languages. Think about this for a minute. OURS not THEIRS. Who cares if it's English or not, it's still ours, right? Is that not enough to satisfy you?"

it really is quite nicely done, even the way the song keeps in harmony even when switching languages. That's not necessarily that easy to do... honestly, if something like this was done here i would think it's a pretty nifty homage.
But then again, you have to understand we are looking at a website made entirely out of comments. Comments are the cancer of the internet. Twitter is pretty much a fast delivery service for massive comment droppings... so that, with facebook comments and youtube comments, and what you have is just pure, undistinguished, internet stupidity.
Never read the comments man... never read the comments.

Further, you could point out that it's "our song in our languages". That's pretty much the ideal for the USA.

I know how it was supposed to be cool and beautiful, but this one hideously cynical side of me felt that it was all butt kissy, sell outish, agenda ridden and exploitive.*
Its like gee, why don't they just create a gaming system called the MexBox One to cash in on the "Brown will be the new White by 2030" statistic.
And the whole situation gets compounded all the more when I've listened to the rants of Conservative non-whites complaining of the hypocritical racism of Liberals.
Plus I'm mildly un-P.C. on some stuff, like I don't believe in the "ooh America was always a melting pot" sentiment. Dutch and German speaking colonists are NOT less white than English speaking ones. Well hokay, was just dropping my two cents on it. I'll stop talking if you believe this will cause a shit storm here.
*I felt the same way about the Troops returning home Budwiser ad.

My problem with the commercial was the same sappy fake sincerity that was foisted upon us in the iPad Air and various car commercials. Buy this car and cure cancer! Buy an iPad Air and climb mountains! Drink Coca-Cola and ensure freedom and liberty!
Further, you could point out that it's "our song in our languages". That's pretty much the ideal for the USA.
Actually a very good point. It's not as if it sang the various national anthems of those people's native countries or that of their ancestors. We won! WE WON! ALL THE MINORITES ARE SINGING AMERICA'S NATIONAL ANTHEM! NATIONALISM REIGNS! WHITE MAN'S BURDEN LIFTED! LET'S ALL DRINK SOME COCA COLA!

If this was the impression I gave, I apologize. I meant that speaking more than English doesn't make one un-American, and it seemed like a nice, warm-and-fuzzy sentiment for a nation founded, at least when looking at the positive elements, on open arms to all.

Well, that would have certainly made the racists happy, since it reinforces the idea that Americans who aren't white and speak English as their first language aren't really Americans, rather than the message of inclusion and common ground that the commercial was trying to convey.
And now for Stephen Colbert. (http://www.towleroad.com/2014/02/stephen-colbert-flips-out-over-coca-colas-super-bowl-ad-celebrating-diversity-video.html)

Haha I wasn't saying you were racist synk, I was just being sarcastic myself. That's how racists could look at it and be happy, as POS said.
But racists are never happy. Even when drinking Coca Cola.
That's something that it was written by a lesbian--I assumed they had picked our actual national anthem due to it being more war-oriented, but maybe that was also a reason America the Beautiful was rejected? From what I understand they were both pretty high on the list of songs up for the choice.

I think its pretty funny how many people are claiming they will never drink Coke now probably don't realize that basically 50% of every other soft drink belongs to the same damn company anyways.

Really this backs up the age-old conspiracy theory that Coca Cola and Pepsi are the secret fronts of liberal and conservative power players, respectively, ever at war for our hearts and minds.

This is how it seemed to me. :)
And basically how I took the commercial.

I am pretty sure this is a vocal minority thing. I mean its a coca-cola commercial. The only reason there is so much rage is because of how easy it is to voice rage. If it took any actual effort to pubically express your disapproval this wouldn't even be something most of us would be aware of.
