Zhang Liao is the shizzle. One of the best officers in the Three Kingdoms Period, and Wei's top tier (though Zhang He was also really freakin' good).

You can tell who the simple DW fans are because they'd mention Xiahou Dun. BUT THEY DONT KNOW SHIT.

Nothing is bad about liking Xiahou Dun but he didn't really do all that much relative to his Dynasty Warriors hype.

He's kind of a relatively unknown figure though, so I think the reason he's popular in the context of DW is because people can project onto him. He's sorta like Zhao Yun in that regard.

Zhang Liao's stand at the battle of Xiaoyao Ford is like... legendary. (they call it "He Fei" in the games).

Like, I'm pretty sure Wei could've been okay without Xiahou Dun, but not without Zhang Liao, Cao Ren, Zhang He, Yue Jin, etc.

I'm trying to think of an instance where Xiahou Dun did anything particularly major but the only two things I can think of is a duel with Guan Yu and the time he lead his troops into an ambush by Liu Bei (Zhuge Liang in the novel) at the Battle of Bowang.

He was very close with Cao Cao though. If Cao Cao saw something amazing in him he probably was amazing.

Cao Cao is god-tier when it comes to figures in the RTK period.

Cao Cao > everyone else. The End.

I don't have anything against him he's just celebrated more in DW than he deserves, and as a result better people get less attention.

He's very similar to what the novel did with Zhuge Liang and Lu Bu...though the latter was actually a problem for Cao Cao, but fun fact: IT WASN'T LU BU'S ARMY AND IT NEVER WAS (it was Zhang Miao's army).

A reverse of this would be Cao Zhen. Due to the novel's emphasis on the Shu vs Wei story, they made it seem Shu was more of a threat than it was. They put Sima Yi to face Zhuge Liang, and fabricated their rivalry. As a result, Cao Zhen, who was really really good IRL, got "stupid" in the novel so Sima Yi could replace him as head of that front.


Pretty sure that eyeball thing was a fabrication too.


I don't have a problem with that either, after all, look at Guan Yu. But the historical For Real Zhang Liao is STILL like 10x more amazing and people ought to notice that.

It'd be like if everyone said Tebow was a better QB than Brady because he sold more jerseys for a couple of years.

I missed a prime opportunity to get in here and rave about Dynasty Warriors characters. One of my favourite things will always be Mash's description of Lu Bu (from a thread in the mod section wherein Mash, Kurosen, and I geeked out about DW):
Lu Bu in general is pretty terrific and I have no idea why Koei suddenly decided to make Zhao Yun their poster boy when really, their version of Lu Bu is the perfect litmus test for determining whether these games are For You or not. Are you down with a 9'x4' dude who looks like he's wearing the Gates of Mordor and runs around wielding the world's deadliest lug nut wrench? Congratulations, you're ready to be a true warrior of the Three Kingdoms.


Also Speroni DW4 Sun Shang Xiang is totally my Waifu and not yours bro, you'll have to find another gorgeous spunky short-haired fighter from the series who's half as great as her, WAIT A MINUTE NO SUCH CHARACTER EXISTS

Lu Bu's daughter is actually better than him in the most recent game and SSX had the most broken weapon in the history of weapons in DW6 due to the way the game calculates its damage.

Zhao Yun is the poster boy because he's super boring like Ryu from SF and so people can project onto him better. He also is with Shu. And Shu are the "good guys". He also lives into his 70s, so he can be around for a lot of stages.

(Not that timeline really matters in DW. Sun Quan would've only been 11 when his dad died but DW8 has him appear as a playable character on the stage where that event happens).

Zhao Yun's Samurai Warriors counterpart is Yukimura Sanada. Basically identical character wise, but a samurai.

Speaking of Yukimura...as big of a fan as I have been of RTK (for 20 years -- all the way back to RTK3 for SNES), Capcom's "Sengoku Basara" is a much better game than any of the Dynasty Warriors.


EDIT: Brian and I slipped a few RTK references in HIKYM. There's probably some in The Dreadful too, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

7 was freakin' garbage. I hated it soooo much. DW7XL helped though...a little.

8 is so much better. There's actually a Free Mode again.

You are restricted to who you can play in Story Mode, which is bullshit, but unlike 7 you have options. You can pick from 1-4 people usually. And at least there's a Free Mode...

So my advice is to stop playing 7 and go buy 8 and 8XL! :D

Yeah, man. 7 basically presents you with a movie that lets you play battles in between and doesn't tell the whole story/all the character's stories, really. I haven't been that happy with it, but I got it as a gift.

DW7XL adds a bunch of new stages/weapons/features AND allows you to play as whomever you want in DW7's Story Mode.

So that helps. It also adds three new Wei characters (Guo Jia, Pang De, and Wang Yi)

I think you ought to be able to find DW7XL cheap now, so it might help the experience for you if you picked it up.

SSX had the most broken weapon in the history of weapons in DW6 due to the way the game calculates its damage.

To elaborate:

She had a bow and it could potentially shoot 5 or 6 arrows at once. Koei decided that each arrow did max damage, rather than split the damage out per arrow. Each arrow also had individual elemental/skill properties.

For example: There was a skill that gave you approx 20% chance to instantly kill any enemy, or do tremendous amounts of damage to Officers. Since EACH arrow had 20% and you shot six of them at once... VERY good odds.

So you could just get up in an enemy's face on any difficulty and shotgun them with arrows and they'd go down pretty much instantly.

The only character that has ever been that broken in a DW game is Xing Cai in DW7XL. Once she's unlocked all her perks she's pretty much invincible. She restores HP on attack (you can get a full health restore by attacking once if the mob is big enough), and she auto-blocks while attacking.
