So I am leaving my home state Georgia this Saturday and moving to North Carolina. Got a better job, have a place to stay and all of that jazz, but I got to admit its an intimidating experience moving this far, as I've grown up in Georgia all my life.

Was curious if you guys had stories about moving quite a distance away, or any advice you guys care to share.

Get out of Georgia as fast as possible

edit: Also, North Carolina likes to pretend it isn't as horribly racist as South Carolina, and SC likes to pretend NC is high and mighty but they're both just as shit as each other. Not really advice, more FYI.

The most important question is: Where at in NC? If you're in the Asheville, Charlotte, or Chapel Hill areas, you're probably going to be okay. Maybe Greensboro, too, I dunno. The rest is pretty much just as much of a backward southern stereotype as anywhere else south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Does it have to be good advice?

I never moved permanently, but I did study abroad and that was a big deal. First thing I did was map out my immediate area, public transit, roads, ect. That way I could easily find my way back. Now you are probably thinking "that seems reasonable".

Well after that I just wandered around aimlessly for hours at a time, in a country where I dont speak the language, have no contacts, no cellphone and completely on foot. Without telling anyone where I was going. Probably not the safest thing. I did however find lots of places to eat, entertainment venues, and interesting locations

Raleigh, though I'll be living at Chapel Hill for the moment (about a 40 minute commute to work at first, but hey, free rent). Luckily, I already have someone I know living in Chapel Hill so I won't be a complete stranger to everyone, but I know two people, which is a little less than I am used to in knowing people in the town that I live in.

Advice: find places to eat, and places to hang out. Basically, just know what resources and services are at your disposal ASAP.

I've got it cocked and loaded for when it's a real one, don't you worry.

WELCOME IC. WELCOME TO THE HOMELAND. YOU WON'T NEED EYES WHERE YOU'RE GOING.

....You will however, need to go here:Jazmins (http://www.jasminbistro.com). Do it for me, who isn't in Raleigh no more, but instead now in the Charlotte/G-Town place where there isn't a Pesto Chicken pannini awaiting me every evening. And when you eat, I will be there in spirit, eating your fries with Tzatziki sauce. Spiritually.

There's also a newly opened branch in Chapel Hill, apparently too.

PYROS thinks NC is an okay place but I will probably ditch this backwater hicksville within six months of getting a decent, non min wage job in vidjamagames maybes. And then I will be in your shoes my friend, so take many notes because everything you do now will be all for the science.

If you ever are in the Charlotte Region, and need a lift, moral support, and must scratch that urge to spend money on a not totally complete stranger, I am in the Charlotte region, and I enjoy sandwiches.

As for things you'll totally need for NC.

Really good tires. All the money that could have gone into better roads for most places instead went towards a NASCAR hall of fame that labors hard to justify its existence. On the upside, we drive much saner than our southern/western neighbors.

Shorts and Parkas: We get COLD, and we get HOT. We also go crazy when a single snowflake falls as well. Makes it very hard to acclimate.

This is where Sun Drop comes from, though any Sun Drop that's not bottled fresh in Gastonia tends to lack the "magic" of proper Sun Drop.

Oh man I can't quit Sun Drop it is clearly manna from heaven, or since manna is I think bread in many cultures it's some form of ambrosia anyway it's so good.
