I love doing this, actually, even though I hate just about every imaginable iteration of prior-Solid-Snake. It's fun! It's nostalgic! It's a perfect complement to my eagerness to continue to experience incredible amounts of self-loathing!!!

There was a lot to enjoy in FFVIII, Snake. There was also a lot of stuff that sucked, but it doesn't make the good ideas not good.

For example, while I think the soundtrack overall was better in VI (I have it in my iTunes rotation, in fact), the whole assault on Dollet sequence is just masterfully scored, crazy exciting, and the way the music and the cutscenes all come together as a package deal make it better than any single sequence in VI.

And the sad thing is that the whole game is filled with stuff that could very well have been that good. The ideas are there, but the execution was flubbed so badly that the game as a whole dropped to meme status.
