I got a good guess why they tell her that they don't want her. It's probably due to the sexual assault she had to endure. Poor girl's gonna need to have a strong head on her shoulders or she's gonna be damaged goods right out of the gate. Man, some people just don't have a fucking chance.

I despise overbearing parents so incredibly much. Have you ever tried coaching lacrosse with overbearing parents? Impossible, I tell you. They got mad at me for organizing my lines and changing how much time each kid saw, and then got madder when I stopped doing that and the team started losing. What was even better were the parents that didn't like me telling their kids "You never back down," or telling them "If you lose a fight, go and hit someone first thing on your next shift." It's a violent, physical sport. To me, there's nothing wrong with wanting my team to excel in that aspect. I understand that you don't want your kids getting bruised and banged up, but putting them in lacrosse was a poor way to go after that objective.


I despise philosophy. See, I'm an economics major. Economics makes sense. You move from the quantity equation model to the Mundell-Fleming model, it makes sense. P becomes variable. Consumption is E=Y. It makes sense. Philosophy? It's an interesting cascade of greys. I can either remember big concepts, differences, or names. Not all 3 at once, because then everything gets all loopy and I find myself ranting about Hardin's troubling triad and then realizing that the name's wrong. Human thought should be more compartmentalized.


People with blue tooth headsets. It's okay to hang up on your damn call, they can call you back, I don't care that it's more convenient. It's 8am, I have class in half an hour, and I need my venti peppermint mocha.


Starbucks. Why did you open a franchise in the library!? You know I go there every day, and you know I'm often sleepy!


Sleep. Most annoying biological process of all time. You have to limit your productivity to do nothing! Why couldn't this be a more passive process, like dolphins?

I'll admit that I haven't taken much Philosophy and that I failed Ethical Principles once (I passed it the second time), but it seems to me that any philosophy class boils down to the professor spending the semester "disproving" every philosophy but the one they subscribe to, then conveniently running out of time before the class can discuss what they do subscribe to, while peppering the whole semester with "But [my philosophy] doesn't have this problem."

I mean, my Philosophy professors, beyond their classes, seemed like alright people, but the classes are just a waste of time. Hence why PHIL classes fall under "irrelevant and uninteresting" courses when I try to sign up. Which is a shame, given the contraction.

Nope. They're actually atheists and, supposedly, ridiculously liberal. This boggles my mind even MORE than if they were religious, in all honesty.
She actually didn't tell them about it, probably because she was afraid of just that.

I hate people who assume that it's okay to stare and make comments about the way I look. And no, I'm not referring to "wow, I love your outfit" or whatnot. I'm talking about random people who walk up to me or my sister and say, out of the blue, "You're so skinny! Don't you ever eat?"

Really? I'm skinny??? Oh good lord, I had never noticed this before! Thank you for pointing this out, and thank you for suggesting I'm anorexic in front of sixty other people!

Okay, let me provide some info here before people start to question my sanity. I have a milder case of the Marfan syndrome, or at least "a related disorder" that they've yet to name. Basically this means that I was born with a crazy genetic defect that makes me tall and unusually thin. It's almost impossible to gain or lose a significant amount of weight.

It causes a lot of other more serious problems, like retina detachment and spontaneous collapsing and shredding of the lungs and heart tissues, but height, weight and nearsightedness are some of the only outwardly visible problems.

Anyway. Yeah, I know you're gonna say that I shouldn't complain about being skinny. And I'm NOT-- I don't mind it at all; it means I can eat whatever the hell I want. That's pretty badass.

The problem is that people stare because they think A) I'm a freak or B) I'm anorexic. I've had people I've never met come up and lecture me about how I'm setting a bad example for young girls. I've had social workers ask if my parents needed help buying food. I've had people staring at me when they think I'm not looking, and point and whisper amongst themselves. I've had an ER nurse, of all people, ask me if I'd like to talk with an eating disorder counselor. I'M NOT THAT SKINNY, PEOPLE. And dealing with that for 23 years gets really old really fast. So I get kinda oversensitive when people make even little comments, like "Wow, you're skinny! I wish I was skinny as you!" But I'm usually too uncomfortable and/or polite to say anything. But it really bugs me that people automatically assume I'm anorexic. It's not that I dislike how I look. I'm fine with it. I just don't like being stared at.



Oh, and I hate when game store employees act shocked that I want to buy games like the original Half Life. Yes, I'm a girl. Yes, I'm buying the game for myself. Yes, I'm aware it involves shooting zombie aliens and has nothing to do with princesses, cooking, or raising puppies. Yes, I know it's old. Gimmie the damn game.

I was the same way (minus the actual health problems) from like, 4th grade through 10th grade, Mauve. Then I bulked out a little.

I got the same bullshit from people. Not sure if it was worse because I was a guy and guys are supposed to be huge and buff, or not as bad because I'm a guy and 'guys don't get anorexic'.

But I totally feel for you, and have a soft spot in my cold black little heart for naturally thin folks regardless of the cause.

But I'm a total asshole and things I might do shouldn't be done by anyone else ever. Edit: I shouldn't do them either, for that matter.

The ones I had were great, though I didn't major in it and can't speak to the department at my undergrad -- I took a more broad overview of philosophy one summer at another university and a "Philosophy of Science" course here as a graduate student. Both were amazing and taught/discussion-led by really on-the-ball professors who engaged the class.



My only real gripe about people recently, aside from the ignorance I saw and felt at the National Constitution Center, has been from students whining over every little thing to get points back on homework.
