Yellow. Then put Pikachu into a box and never use him again for no reason.

Actually Raticate was one of my favorites when I did an all-mouse playthrough.
@Tev: That is exactly what I want. |
2nd Generation, though containing some weird ones, was far better than the first generation. Pokemon got ridiculous after that.

I voted for Blue version because that was my first pokemon game. Starter of Squirtle, open catching, and I don't care what's in your party as long as it has a haunter in it. (Gengar is preferred, but I don't think you'll put that much effort into it to trade him.)

I prefer Gen 2 with Silver, but Blue's a good choice, I suppose. I always went for the Fire starter, simply because it's a lot easier to find water and grass types throughout the game. Worry about your team when you get there. I, for one, always tried to only catch the earliest incarnation of a pokemon with hopes of having to train it up myself, which could maybe encourage the idea of having a team that isn't the same 6 throughout the entire game.

The older games are also shorter, so i think you should pick any of those. Do open catch, but if i may suggest you should have one Butterfree on your final team.
BUTTERFREE RULES ALL BITCHES! |
Also, if you end up choosing between a second gen game, make it silver, because Lugia beats the living crap out of Ho-Ho, and I've never played Crystal.

I vote Blue for pure nostalgia.
Starter Bulbasaur. |
Blue and everyone voting for Blue is stupid. Red is king.
And start with Charmander. |
