EDIT: Like I know Riku locked himself in the darky door of darkness or w/ev at the end of 1. but like he wasn't even THAT broke up about it in that game but then in II it's like the hugest deal.

EDIT: There's a 50% chance I'm spelling Riku like the character from Final Fantasy X and a 100% chance that one of you nerdwads will make a huge point of pointing it out if I am.

KH1: "My friends are gone. Oh hey, Riku's evil! At least I know he's still alive, we can have a chat later and he'll be good."

KH2: Kairi's safe in an island that has "nothing ever happens around here" as a plot point. She's safe. Sora has no idea where Riku is or if he's even alive.

Riku was being a wangsty twirp, so he tried to lose himself in the darkness so he'd never be found again. Sora, being the inconvenient young man that he is, found him anyway and said LOL DUDE WE'RE HOMIES, WHY YOU THINK I CARE YOU TRIED TO KILL ME AND TAKE KAIRI AWAY A YEAR AGO?

The "trying to kill him" thing was definitely out of line, but as for Kairi, wasn't he basically searching for a cure for her coma?

Yeah, that's about right. If you don't have a name, you don't have plot armor. The people in Traverse Town have a small army of FF characters protecting them, and that's only in one area of town.

It looks like at one time there had been plans in development for more NPC's up in the world, and even elements of Final Fantasy towns, one per world with shops and whatnot, but the loose and not entirely linear progression as well as the difficulty of having both monsters and NPC's out in the open for shopping and the like made them have the ghost towns we see in KH 1&2. Traverse Town is notably a fully realized town, and Hollow Bastion and Twilight Town in 2 have nameless NPC's walking around at a few points before the Heartless attack.

It's weird, yeah, but there's that, the fact that Sora and Kairi aren't actually dating and that FRIENDSHIP is crazy important on the Disney side... Also, Sora seems to be oblivious to any feelings Kairi could have for him, to the point of not even considering it possible - paopu fruit thing early on the first game.
