You got some links for this awesome RTS?

McTahr 04-25-2008 09:32 AM

Surprised I haven't seen this one yet.

Ancient Domains of Mystery

Extensive Rogue-like. Think Nethack on steroids. Has Mac betas, Linux, Windows, and DOS versions available.

Mr.Bookworm 04-25-2008 09:43 AM

Is mudah still around?

He hasn't updated the list in a loooooooooong time.

Cid Highwind 07-05-2008 11:03 PM

One of my favorite "old" PC games Star Control 2 went open source and is now being made into a superior version. Dont be afraid of the Beta tag, its a soldi release with very few bugs. They just never got around to adding in the extras they wanted to. They still managed to merge the voice and animation from the 3DO version, however.

I suggest trying it, its quite fun.

mudah.swf 07-07-2008 07:24 AM

Oh shit, people are actually still posting in this? I had only noticed the new posts today, believe it or not. Sorry guys, I'll get updating. If I've missed your game along the line yell at me over PMs or something and I'll add it in.

e: List finally updated.

Rokrin 07-10-2008 11:59 PM

Combat Arms

Saw this one on the back of PC Gamer and decided to check it out. It's actually a really good FPS, the graphics are great for a free game, and the community isn't all 10 year olds.

ironymaster 09-21-2008 12:58 PM

Samurai of Legend

Found this one as a banner ad. It's a decent game and similar in the way that Kingdom of Loathing plays. It allows you to get married, get a job, buy a house, adventure, kill things. I find it fun. Anyway here is the link!

Samurai of Legend

As you can tell it takes place in the days of samurai, it's very fun!

Savage Thinking 09-21-2008 01:33 PM

Gang Garrison 2

It's basically a 2D version of Team Fortress 2. It's a really fun online game and I'm really blown away at how things are implemented for just a 2D online shooter. I'd personally recommend downloading the latest version as (despite what it says) I have the least amount of server issues and you can do a whole lot more.

It's still under development though (Engineers are unable to make Sentry guns right now if I remember correctly), but loads of fun.

Orion Pulse 10-18-2008 10:58 PM

Are there any freeware Flight Sims that don't blow ass out there? I've been googlin' my eyes out for weeks, thought maybe you people Up Nort' might know of anything. Not looking for ZOMGMSFSX or anything, just somethin' I can bum around on while my PS2 is on the fritz.

Also, yes, combat related. Not terribly interested in puttering around in a Cessna for hours.

TheSparrow 01-21-2009 05:23 PM

Infocom has the three Original Zork text adventure games for download for free.

Also while I've seen ADOM and Nethack mentioned I have yet to see anyone mention:
Moria (warning: this game is no longer maintained) or
Angband or any of its Variants
These games are available for windows(except for moria), Linux or Mac.

P.S. Diablo was based of the Rogue/Moria/Angband tree, not the Hack/Nethack tree :P

Daimo Mac, The Blue Light of Hope 02-22-2009 03:28 PM

Shopping Cart Hero.

A fun little flash game.

mudah.swf 02-22-2009 05:27 PM

Huh, the topic title doesn't get highlighted when people post in this thread anymore, so as a result I don't notice any new games being posted. Odd.

WillyFourEyes 03-21-2009 09:38 AM

Speaking of free music games like Stepmania and Frets on Fire, how about some love for osu!? Made specifically for the Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents fan in you, and it comes with a custom "step editor" that allows you to draw your own patterns. I really should get back to work on my beatmap for the long version of Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat"...

Whomper 03-21-2009 10:05 AM

CardMaster Conflict - http://www.cardmasterconflict.com/

It's a free and fun CCG, with creations from the mind of Mark Shallow (creator of ADVENTURERS!, Antihero for Hire and more), featuring cameos of various other webcomic artists and in-depth player involvement. I've played over six thousand matches, personally, so I thought I'd give it a proper shout-out here.

Eldezar 04-21-2009 10:00 PM

Magic Duel

This game promotes a non-spoiler attitude. Meaning, no player is allowed to tell you how to solve a quest, defeat an NPC, what this monster's stats are, etc... You develop your own strategy and find things out for yourself. It also greatly promotes role-play. Hints are ok in some cases. SOME.

Players actually CREATE some of the quests and can GIVE A REWARD. If you have been part of the game for some time, you begin to have a say in how it expands. There is one player that is about to have his home/smithy actually integrated into the game. The house is already there, just needs an interior coded and drawn.

There are some premium features available, but like most games they are not necessary. The plus side to the premium features is that EVERYTHING is only 1 dollar, regardless of it's power. The downside is that you have to have had so many active days (days that you actually logged on) or stats in order to be able to purchase about 60-80% of the premium items. I think this is mainly to prevent rich noobs from getting some powered up weapons and annihilate everything.

It's a browser game, where every npc, monster and 'room' of the map is hand drawn. Creates a pretty nifty atmosphere. Also, if you are a good artist, they will pay you for your work. So you can become an even bigger part of the game. More details inside.

That's all the cool stuff I can think of at the moment without spoiling anything. This is all stuff you can find out right away, and isn't related to story or quests or nuthin.

Remember, if you join, try to think quick about your background and your role in the game. In some cases, how well your name fits with your role helps too.

Summary: Medieval fantasy, heavy roleplay, spoiler-free, and the players can create quests and new aspects of the game and decide how it expands.

Bestheda has released The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall for free download!

Rokrin 07-19-2009 12:46 AM

http://www.battlefieldheroes.com

A fun little TF2-esque third person shooter. You get experience and level up and earn money you can use to buy new weapons, and you level up abilities as you gain experience as well. Two factions (Allies and Nazis, although they don't go so far as to SAY that), and you can either be a spy-like thing, a heavy weapons guy, or a standard infantrymen. Has vehicles.

BattyAsHell 11-08-2009 10:20 AM

I can spend all day in this thread just posting stuff. :D

Ok, these may have already been posted and I missed them, so bear with me:

Mabinogi.

IMO, this is one of the only free MMO's to really compete with the commercial games. There's free games with better graphics, but this by far has the most dynamic gameplay. The amount of skills and things you can do are amazing.. You can even compose your own music, sit on a street corner, and get donations for entertaining people.

Atlantica Online

This is the other MMO which I believe can compete with the pay for ones.

This is unique, for being a turn based MMO. Think Final Fantasy Tactics, with a timer. You can eventually accumulate up to 8 mercs, and in PvP you join other groups for big 100 on 100 battles.. It can get a bit nuts. The best thing about this game, is the cash shop is totally optional.. You can experience all the content, without ever spending a dime.

Other games:

Survival Crisis Z

This used to be pay for, but now it's free. You're in a city filled with zombies, there's random safehouses populated by one of three factions, and you can take missions from any single faction. You can also simply take over houses by bombing them terrorist style breaking their resolve, or just beat them down the old fashioned way.

It's a pretty fun game, and if the graphics were better it'd compete with Dead Rising or Resident Evil series as the best zombie themed games out there.

Think GTA with zombies and no cars, and you'll get an idea how what this games about.

BattyAsHell 11-08-2009 11:55 AM

I see Cave Story and Eternal Daughter was already posted. If you haven't already played Cave Story, I highly recommend it. It's too good to be a free game.

A recently released game called Iji is probably only second to Cave Story, IMO. It has a graphical style like Another World, and a pseudo-RPG system similar to the Deus Ex games. The game took four years to develop, and it shows. The game actually modify's the story based on your actions, for example if you try being a pacifist vs being a bloodthirsty killer, you'll get different logs and messages from the enemies.

If you don't try anything else on the lists posted in this thread, I'd at least recommend trying Cave Story and Iji. I think they're the best of the best, and could've easily been an Xbox Live or PSN game, or at least justified being sold as a commercial product.

One more recommendation: Kytt was posted on the first page, and it's a good game. But "Kytt Stories" is the sequel for Kytt and has been around for awhile now, and IMO is the superior game. It's actually a series of games or levels, with the download including one "level pack" consisting of the main game, and than you can download seperate level packs online (Both official and fan made)

For the record, Knytt Stories was ported to the Nintendo DS, unofficially.

..

Just want to post a quick reminder that the second list of free games can be found on Page 7 in case anyone missed it.

Nikose Tyris 11-08-2009 01:23 PM

Could you edit the first post to have a link to the second post?

mudah.swf 11-08-2009 01:35 PM

I'm one step ahead of you there.

Whoops. All the ones I mentioned are there..

Ok than, I have a few good one's that are not on either list:

Quake Live

This is Quake III Arena, loadable in a browser with fullscreen and widescreen support. It features a skill assessment course and matchmaking based on comparable skills, which I can attest works well since I'm almost always scoring at a competitive level...

S4 League

Think Gunz: The Dual, except fun. :p

S4 is a third person shooter with team deathmatch, a "football" type game, and an interesting mode called "Chaser" where one person is chosen randomly to be an overpowered boss type who's supposed to hunt down and kill all the normal players. Very stylish, and very easy to get into.

mudah.swf 11-15-2009 11:55 AM

Any updates to the lists throughout next week are unlikely, because I'm going on holiday. If I can find a wifi spot then maybe I could update, but I'm not guaranteeing one.

Xeleine 12-16-2009 07:14 PM

This thread is really awesome, I was hoping for something like this when I first saw the board. ^^ Thanks to everyone who put this together so we could waste hours upon hours shooting/breaking/slashing stuff!

Seil 12-27-2009 03:45 AM

I killed Satan in a Bejeweled spinoff. Can you?

mudah.swf 12-30-2009 03:35 PM

In hindsight I think saving the second post of this thread for the new list would have been a great idea.

Lost in Time 01-12-2010 11:47 AM

You ever think, "I love Left 4 Dead, but it would be more awesome if it would be ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System!" Well, wonder no more, you can now download an 8-Bit styled Left 4 Dead game now, for free, over at Eric Ruth Games!

*Not Required: NES.

Jagos 02-26-2010 06:17 PM

Sushi cat

I can't stop playing...

mudah.swf 03-18-2010 04:44 PM

Desktop Dungeons, a bite-size roguelike that gradually eases the player into it. Most likely much easier than your standard roguelikes, but I find I'm quite liking it, being My First Roguelike. Managed to beat the standard dungeon with a Dwarf Fighter so far. Supports online scoreboards.

bluestarultor 06-02-2010 06:43 PM

For those who didn't know, The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall has been released as freeware.

Aldurin 12-20-2010 03:41 PM

I don't know if you can have a dead sticky thread, but I'll take the risk.

Dink Smallwood is an old style RPG over a decade old but still pretty fun. It's compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac.

It's high points are its "bizarre" humor, classic feel and utter shitload of player-made add-ons (or D-mods) for you to try.

Just be careful about dealing with those guys on the forum, it's a dying community that pushes out the occasional mediocre D-mod and barely keeps up with compatibility. The site admins and driving force have been long gone and most of them are stuck in the past. I went ahead and left them after seeing that they weren't gonna make progress (no active site admin is a huge wtf).

So yeah add it to the list.

mudah.swf 12-21-2010 11:41 AM

Never fear, I'm still updating this thing. The new list is on Page 7 btw, I ran out of space on the first page. Should have taken that second post :(

Loyal 12-21-2010 01:26 PM

I forgot this thread existed.

Spelunky. An addictive platformer game where you, the Indiana Jones expy, explore a cave for fun and profit while trying to avoid the many, many things that can (and will) kill you. Along the way you'll pilfer valuable golden idols, rescue damsels for a hero's reward, and barter with trigger-happy shopkeepers for items that will make your quest easier more survivable. Part of what makes the game so addicting is that the cave is algorithmically generated each time you go through. Also, despite its punishing difficulty it very rarely proves frustrating. You'll get killed in situations like thesehttp://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2995/spelunkypz5.gif and all you can do in response is laugh and give it another shot.

There's a Youtube LP to be found here, but much of the fun in the game is in the exploration, so these videos may spoil the surprises.

Specterbane 03-22-2011 04:24 AM

Hey, the guys who did Wesnoth are doing a side-scrolling platformer now. It's called Frogatto and it's really a lot of fun so far. The gameplay feel solid and it's got a pretty relaxed difficulty level. Here's a review.

Aldurin 03-22-2011 06:43 AM

That's a pretty cool game actually.

Aldurin 04-10-2011 04:32 PM

I recently discovered Exit Fate, a very nice free rpg with some strategy gameplay and plenty of party options as you go along. Also the formation and magic systems are nice.

Kim 10-13-2012 01:36 AM

Middens

Free RPG with amazing visual style.

Quote:

I believe we are witnessing a two-fold process that consists, on one hand, in the separation of civilians and soldiers from the reality and the consequences of the war through technology and secrecy such as the myriad of undercover drone operations around the world. And, on the other hand, in the pervasion of stylized, sanitized or redacted depictions of war in news and entertainment. I’m sure older gamers are aware that the real war doesn’t look like Modern Warfare, but I fear that the proliferation of these cool, sexy representations has a overall soothing effect. This reinforces the doctrine of the endless global war, it turns what is supposed to be an exception, the last resort in conflict resolution, into something normal, a little thought in the back of our minds, a low intensity buzz that accompanies our everyday life.

McTahr 03-22-2013 03:11 AM

I recently came across this.

Quite the resource for the bored of the board.
