The NPF Legal Free Games Masterlist.
Ok, so the point of this thread is to compose a masterlist of legal free games. Post a link to a free game and a brief description and I'll add it to the list, so if any bored NPF users are browsing at work or something and want some free time wasters to play they can just look here. I'll start!
(No trials at all please, no matter how cool). One more thing, if you post a game, please specify if it will work with Macs, if possible. It'll be really helpful. Gotta think of those on Macs. Thanks. SECOND LIST ON PAGE 7 Action/Adventure. ABA Games. Collection of freeware shmups. Some are quite gimmicky but everyone needs to play Torus Trooper. Every Extend. Recently remade for the PSP, this is the original. Still fun with pumping trance music and addictive gameplay. Cave Story. Side-scrolling shooter/exploration game with RPG elements, purty old-school sprites, and a right decent story. It's pretty long for a free game as well. I recommend using a gamepad. Submitted by Phil_ MAC COMPATIBLE. Sonic Robo Blast 2 Made using the Doom Legacy engine as a base and then ripping out all its innards and making it more platformer friendly plus adding a nice sense of speed to it all makes this sadly better then any of the offical 3D Sonic games made.. Not to mention you can play online in Co-Op, Race, CTF, Deathmatch, and Tag. Submitted by Kroze Gamegod. Warning Forever - Addictive little twitch shm'up, just an endless series of bosses, who evolve depending upon how you attack the previous one. Great fun. Very addictive. Submitted by Bravefencer Shinryu. Eternal Daughter - (Scroll to the bottom) Another entry into the Metroid-type gameplay genre, this game is excellent. Beware, though, it is very hard, but not in the mean and cruel way, in the punish you for your mistakes way. Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 are now freeware, downloadable from the Rockstar site (you have to give details but they don't spam you) here: http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ Submitted by Babybahamut. Knytt. Monkey/cat thing gets abducted by an alien whose UFO proceeds to crash. It's your job to find the pieces of the UFO so you can go home. Won't take anyone long to beat but it's got a great atmosphere, minimal but good graphics and fun for anyone into Metroid-lite games. Marathon. A trio of FPSes from Bungie, the makers of Halo. Full of kick-ass action, with intricate puzzles as well as plot so rich in detail that it spawned a cult following. Everything you need can be found here. Download a scenario ("Marathon" is the first), then download the appropriate version of Aleph One (a more recent version than on this page can be found here). That's all you need. Install as shown and you're good to go. HighRes texture packs found there are optional but definitely make the game look much better than without. Go for it. Submitted by Iymerion Electric Bird. Odd shooter which sees you play as an electric bird, shooting blocks and weird shape things. Nice presentation and smooth framerate. Open source too. I think. Also the F.E.A.R. Multiplayer is a completly free Download. You can get it here. Submitted by EVILness. http://www.acid-play.com/download/soldat/ My god, its an addicting 2d shooter. You have to pay for the original mode, but if you download this mod http://browse.files.filefront.com/So...owsefiles.html you can play single player for free. Submitted by CluelessDictator. Liero Xtreme. Liero Xtreme is sort of like Worms, except completely different because it is not turn-based and it is definitely not a strategy game, and you use one character (not a team). So basically it is a third person fragfest with wacky weapons, for example, there is a weapon in the game called "Foot of Gork". You customize the weapon drop rate and health, there are many stages and weapon sets (from Star Trek stuff to food), and there is a bunch of DLC to keep the game fresh. Also there is LAN and online play (though I have never tried the online multiplayer. Submitted by Bananarama. Tyrian 2000, one of the best PC Schm'ups ever made, released as freeware a couple of years back. At the bottom of the article there are links to a couple of download sites. Submitted by Bravefencer Shinryu. http://www.americasarmy.com/ a free complete multiplayer fps developed and updated by the US army. Submitted by vgplayer101 Gunroar- Schmup with impressive graphics, that deals with boats. Many ways to play, and a real good time. Submitted by Donomni. Diabolika II, a fun little puzzle game. Easy to learn, hard to master. Submitted by Bravefencer Shinryu. N. Awesome ninja jump n' run game. Submitted by Mr. Bookworm. http://www.agdinteractive.com The remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 can be downloaded here, along with a special parody game. These are Adventure or Puzzle games similar to Monkey Island or Deja Vu or various other titles. These remakes have a point and click interface and enhanced graphics like the later games in the series. Submitted by Magus. Meritous. It's an odd combination of Zelda style dungeon crawler and bullet hell shmup. You attack with a circular wave which not only hurts enemies but nullifies bullets too, which is essential since enemies from the beginning shoot tons of bullets at you. The wave is chargeable, but the longer you charge it for the longer you're without it. Your character can be upgraded to have a shield, stronger wave and shorter charging/cooldown time. It's a challenging game. Within A Deep Forest (WADF) WADF is a 2-D side scrolling platform/puzzle/adventure game created using Multimedia Fusion. Where you take control of a scientfic experiment (which coincidently happens to be a bouncing ball) that has the task of defusing a bomb that threatens the earth. Key strengths of this game include refreshing puzzles, atmospheric gameplay, and a healthy length of playing. If you have played the game 'Knytt', you will probably also enjoy this game. Submitted by Coral. Typhoon 2001, a clone inspired by Tempest and Tempest 2000. Addictive to the highest degree. Submitted by Bravefencer Shinryu. Blue Wish Resurrection. It's an awesome, completely free Bullet Hell SHUMP. Difficult, but in an awesome way. Good soundtrack, and some unlockables, including a true final boss that I'm willing to bet noone here will be able to even get to legitimately, as you need to beat the rest of the game on hell mode (the hardest difficulty) without using a continue. It even has decent sprite-based graphics, but you'll be so busy dodging bullets you won't really notice :p Submitted by Magish. Strategy Wesnoth. A fun turn based strategy game with a little RPG mixed in. When your units level up, theres a VERY noticable difference in them. Submitted by B_real_shadows. Dofus Arena. You could say this is an online Final Fantasy Tactics. Gimme a fight! *Free for now, although as soon as it's not free it'll be removed from this list.rl=http://www.gamershell.com/download_11942.shtml]SWINE.[/url] A quirky little RTS where you choose one of two factions, Pigs or Rabbits. Actually used to be a retail game, but the company went under so they made it free. Submitted by EVILness. War Rock - Think a free Battlefield 2. I've seen it played, not the most cutting graphics, but it could kill an afternoon online. They offer a one time fee to upgrade your account to a premium, but from what I see almost everything works without the premium. Submitted by EVILness. Savage: The Battle for Newerth - A FPS with RTS elements. Its very hard to explain... If you are the commander you play a RTS, if you are a soldier you play a FPS. Just play it and go see for yourself. Submitted by EVILness. Stargate Online. Woah there fanboys, it's a browser based strategy game, at its young days. Submitted by Marn. http://www.freeallegiance.org MMO Squad based space combat sim (not to heavy on the sim) with elements of RTS. Although that hardly does it justice. Vantage Master Online A downloaded, fun strategy game where you, a Master, summon Natials to fight against the opposing Master and his Natials. Has a single player mode with killer difficulty, and online play for going head to head with other guys. Submitted by loyal2nes. T R E M U L O U S is the only game that I really waste my time with these days. It's a standalone FPS+RTS combination (think Savage, but without the "commander" aspect) based on a modified Q3 engine. It's a very standard aliens vs. human marines setting, but both teams are radically different, and having a good builder can make or break your team. The learning curve can be steep, but it's worth checking out if your the type that enjoys a well-thought out FPS. Also, it's only officially supported for Linux and Windows, though an unnofficial Mac version can be found, provided you're diligent enough to get to it. Submitted by Seffy. Spacewarz. Submitted by Hawk. Utopia and Earth: 2025. Two of the oldest and best free online games ever made by good ol' Mehul Patel. Submitted by PraetorZorak. MMO Shot-Online - A free online golf MMO. I shall now show you all the wonder that is a GOOD Sonic game in 3D!
Impossible you ask? Well, just take a look at this baby: Sonic Robo Blast 2 Made using the Doom Legacy engine as a base and then ripping out all its innards and making it more platformer friendly plus adding a nice sense of speed to it all makes this sadly better then any of the offical 3D Sonic games made.. Not to mention you can play online in Co-Op, Race, CTF, Deathmatch, and Tag. Also, even though the main thing right now only has 3 Zones in it, people in the community have made some damn good level packs like Mystic Realm which is a full add on with over 7 Zones and tons of secrets and two smaller level packs Acid Missile and Chaos Zone each with three Zones in them make this game amazing. Best part? Its ALL FREE!! Now if only Sega would make their new Sonic games this good they might not be in the slump they are currently in. |
Warning Forever - Addictive little twitch shm'up, just an endless series of bosses, who evolve depending upon how you attack the previous one. Great fun. Very addictive.
Eternal Daughter - (Scroll to the bottom) Another entry into the Metroid-type gameplay genre, this game is excellent. Beware, though, it is very hard, but not in the mean and cruel way, in the punish you for your mistakes way. Check out the other games there too, I recommend Diabolika II, a fun little puzzle game. Easy to learn, hard to master. StepMania - THE Freeware DDR-esque game. Tons of plug-ins and fucktons of songs/stepfiles, this game will give you a lot to do, even if you only play with your keyboard. Shot-Online - A free online golf MMO. Don't look at me that way. Golf games are a lot more fun to play than watching it. Trust me. Albatross 18: Realms of PangYa - Another free online golf MMO, this one takes a more whimsical approach to the sport. |
Thanks for contributing people. Everything's been updated now. Later on I'll make the list a bit more organised.
|
Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 are now freeware, downloadable from the Rockstar site (you have to give details but they don't spam you) here: http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/

Ok, everything's been updated. Check the newly organised list too. Hopefully this will take off.

The Marathon Trilogy.
Go for it. Also, if you scroll down, you'll see that there are six fan made scenarios available for download (despite what is implied, note that all scenarios linked are in fact cross-platform, except for Morgana's Revenge. There is a cross-platform beta version of this in the works which can be found here). Other links that may be of interest: Marathon Trilogy Release Page Marathon Open Source Page Fileball, a depository for tons of maps and additions. marathon.bungie.org, an all encompassing fansite for everything Marathon. Ok, so that wasn't a brief description, but I wanted to be thorough. |
Before I forget, I now have somewhere around 170+ songs for Frets on Fire. That's including all the songs from Guitar Hero I & II. So if anybody wants to take the bait then shoot some PM missiles... or maybe I'll just put up a link. Though if I recall correctly that's against the rules... (b'o')b
|
Is it a Torrent file? Because Frets On Fire isn't illegal in and of itself...
Better just PM Shiney. EDIT: And while you're at it, let me know what you do have for FoF. |
If you've got steam, then
http://gmod.garry.tv/download.php is an incredible HL 2 mod. I'm surprised no one has put this, but I can't get a link. My I.E. is too new. go to Mapleglobal.com ( must have Internet explorer) MAPLESTORY!! <(^.^)> (it is a cutesy Korean game, but those Koreans did it right!) |
They're 3 rar/zip files which I uploaded on Megaupload.
I was gonna type out the list for you... but then I decided to be a fucking genius and take this screenshot: linked for being pretty damn big And I don't post the files because the song files are being distributed by consent. Playing GH songs for free probably wouldn't be considered legal (barring owning a copy I suppose). EDIT: ha, just realized i'm missing one GH2 song, Arterial Black by Drist, (bonus) |
www.runescape.com
Adventure game with thousands of people all over the globe, with monsters to kill and money to earn. Two pyramid scheme empire MMORPG mostly text strategy web browser games.
http://darkthrone.com/ http://www.kingsofchaos.com/ Similarly (forget if it's pyramidscheme), but with a single character. http://carnageblender.com/ Similarly (not pyramidscheme), renowned for humor value. http://kingdomofloathing.com Classic FF (I-VI) Webbrowser MMORPG-ized. The administrator type guy stopped paying for the server a while ago, so its on-off-ness fluctuates based on season. Not very full most of the time. http://astralle.phpwebhosting.com/hte2/ Another empire webbrowser MMORPG type game. Not pyramidscheme. http://medievalbattles.com/ Something like Runescape's nemesis. FF-style TBS RPG in Flash, no real MMO part of it that I know of. http://www.battleon.com Some more primitive short-term game sites. If FFT/7/12/10/Disgaea/2/DQ8 were cakes/pies/pastries, this would be candy. http://freearcade.com/ http://mofunzone.com/ http://sess.net/ http://www.shockwave.com/home.jsp http://www.realarcade.com/ http://www.games.com/ http://www.funflashgames.com/ http://ezone.com/ http://www.ugoplayer.com/ http://freeaddictinggames.com/ http://xgenstudios.com/ http://www.popcap.com/ http://freeonlinegames.com/ Some contain more sophisticated candy bars than others. Find out for yourself which ones! Extending the metaphor, this candy contains crack cocaine. http://www.newgrounds.com/ And now, we come to the disgusting low fat, low sodium, no sugar "healthy snacks" part of the metaphor that no one likes. http://pbskids.org/zoom/games/index.html http://disney.go.com/games/today/index.html http://www.nick.com/games/index.jhtml |

Here is some Free games you can add...
War Rock - Think a free Battlefield 2. I've seen it played, not the most cutting graphics, but it could kill an afternoon online. They offer a one time fee to upgrade your account to a premium, but from what I see almost everything works without the premium. S.W.I.N.E. - A quirky little RTS where you choose one of two factions, Pigs or Rabbits. Actually used to be a retail game, but the company went under so they made it free. Savage: The Battle for Newerth - A FPS with RTS elements. Its very hard to explain... If you are the commander you play a RTS, if you are a soldier you play a FPS. Just play it and go see for yourself. Also the F.E.A.R. Multiplayer is a completly free Download. You can get it here. And if your including HL Mods, the well, I must reccomend Natural Selection and Zombie Panic. |
http://www.acid-play.com/download/soldat/
My god, its an addicting 2d shooter. You have to pay for the original mode, but if you download this mod http://browse.files.filefront.com/So...owsefiles.html you can play single player for free. (hint-spoiler-) first-how do you put spoiler tags? Hint will come when I know. |

Hey, are any of these for Macs? I tried checking out a bunch of some good sounding ones, but no luck with finding ones that werent windows. If there are any it might be helpful to label them as such.
|
Tyrian 2000, one of the best PC Schm'ups ever made, released as freeware a couple of years back. At the bottom of the article there are links to a couple of download sites.

Everything's been updated guys. Sorry for the lateness of it, haven't been on the Net for a while. Maybe I'll look through these games and label those that work on Mac but it would be helpful if anyone submitmitting a game says if it works with Macs in the description. Thanks.

a free complete multiplayer fps developed and updated by the US army http://www.elderscrolls.com/download...oads_games.htm TES arena, the original elder scrolls game, now free to download edit= AA is for PC and you need to dl a DOS emulator to run Arena |
I hate to have to repeat this, but it would be really, really nice if people could start specifying whether something is for macs or just for pc's. It's really annoying to have to try and download something, only to find out after a while that it's only for pc's. Please, no one has done that while posting new games yet, its only a little bit of typing, and it isn't hard to do.
|
I think I'll put that in the OP, actually.
|
1up.com just posted a bunch of free games.
There are a few dud links in the article, and because the original guys who did this were Games for Windows, I wouldn't expect Mac support, although if anyone can try any on a Mac and see, go ahead. If you find any worthwhile, just post the link to it here, I 'spose. Gunroar- Schmup with impressive graphics, that deals with boats. Many ways to play, and a real good time. Also, may a discussion thread for said free games be made? |
I personally don't mind if you make a discussion thread for this. Go ahead if you want. If you do link to the list in the OP though.
|
Done and done.

Vantage Master Online
A downloaded, fun strategy game where you, a Master, summon Natials to fight against the opposing Master and his Natials. Has a single player mode with killer difficulty, and online play for going head to head with other guys. Thanks to FencerShinryuu for reminding me of the name and providing a link so I didn't have to Google it. |
Update to Cave Story: the Gameflaws site has moved to http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/
New game for the list: Nethack. A bastardly hard turn-based randomly generated dungeon crawler; the inspiration for Diablo, and the successor to Hack (which itself follows from the big daddy of them all, Rogue). Twenty years old and still undergoing active development. http://www.nethack.org/ -- the main site. I know it's not any single game, but a good go-to site for legal abandonware is www.abandonia.com. It's a good site to find most anything worth playing (and some that sadly isn't), with the added bonus of not distributing ESA-listed games they have listed and directing you to the parent companies of games you can still buy. They also point you toward several programs that you can use to run non-XP compatible DOS games.

http://www.agdinteractive.com The remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 can be downloaded here, along with a special parody game. These are Adventure or Puzzle games similar to Monkey Island or Deja Vu or various other titles. These remakes have a point and click interface and enhanced graphics like the later games in the series.

I'm going to throw in a suggestion of my own here. It's a challenging game.

zylom These two good sites (that I don't believe have been listed yet) have a ton of games on them. Oh, and did anyone say armorgames? |
If garry's mod is still free like it says so in the list where can I download it?
|
I checked and I don't think it's free anymore =/
Removing from list. |
Well, it's been in my sig for ages but I might as well put it up on here too: Spacewarz.
We're currently having a massive 80 day round in an attempt to get a load of new players, so if anyone signs up, send me a PM and I can get you into my empire, Fury. Even if you don't want to continue playing, do me a favour and log in ten times anyway (that link above is my personal refferal code so anyone who clicks it is registered on my friends list and if they log in ten times I get a nice bonus of a very rare and valuable commodity.) So feel free to help me out and I'll take you in and teach you to play. |
I do not believe this game has been mentioned on the master list yet.
How on earth this thread got this far without metioning Utopia and Earth: 2025 is beyond me. Two of the oldest and best free online games ever made by good ol' Mehul Patel.

MMO game, sci-fi, build up your own little ship and be a trader, pirate or something else. Browser Based. |
Holy merciful God. I've started to forget about this place, I thankfully remember it.
Anyways, the reason was because of this game I found once on my random strolls on the other forum where I like to go. The game is called Cave Story, and all I have to say about is that is one hell of a game. I highly recommend it. Here is the link: http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/ Basically, this game will remind you of the sweet golden age of the NES because of its graphics, which are nicely done even though they are simple, but simplicity beats complexity in my own view. Anyways, the game has multiple, and I mean multiple endings that I am not going to tell to you guys because I recently got into it. As for the gameplay, let's just say that is a good mix of Metroid, Castlevania and other 2-D games of that time, which you will love, veteran in gaming or not. Play it, and remember to download the English version in case you don't know any Japanese. It is a bit troublesome because of the camera, but then you get used to it. Yes, Mudah may have already posted it, but hey, I bringed it back for the people who have not seen it yet, along with giving it more explanation and details than he did. Although it might be about 95% impossible that people have not seen this game. Blech. With this game, I might as well start getting into Indy gaming, thanks to a friend of mine who is a Firefox and Indy game addict. If you come and read this, you will know who am I saying. Also, check out Fraxy, a game that people in my school play most of the time. I have yet to play it, but judging by the comments the people there had and how it looks like, I can bet it is a great game. |
Typhoon 2001, a clone inspired by Tempest and Tempest 2000. Addictive to the highest degree.
|
I used to play a text-based mmorpg called on sindome.org, called Sindome, go figure. The people there are hard-core roleplayers, it's only problem is that there were never enough people online. A basic example everyone may relate with is Judge Dredd. So if you are into that, check it out.
|
First off sorry for the kind of late update, my internet's been out of commission for the past 7 or so days and it's only just come back today. Also I added a new game called DJ Max Online. It's just an online Beatmania clone where you can play on your own or with up to 4 others. For more info check the OP.

Does anyone know where I can download a free and safe (malicious script/programming-wise) copy of Might and Magic VII: for Blood and Honor? I would take back my request if it would be illegal to download it, but seeing as it was a Windows 98/ME game whose last version was pulled from sale over six years ago, I was hoping it would be fine.

Blue Wish Resurrection (click the left button [you'll see] to download)
Company's site - beware, japanese It's an awesome, completely free Bullet Hell SHUMP. Difficult, but in an awesome way. Good soundtrack, and some unlockables, including a true final boss that I'm willing to bet noone here will be able to even get to legitimately, as you need to beat the rest of the game on hell mode (the hardest difficulty) without using a continue. It even has decent sprite-based graphics, but you'll be so busy dodging bullets you won't really notice :p |
Beyond Evolution www.beyondevo.com its yet another one of many non-round browser based games. Its very new and they are still working on it & I've only recently started playing it so to be honest I don't know how good it will be but the reason I'm posting it is its been fairly fun so far and its claim is that you are a time-traveling caveman...and well that's just friggin cool.

Well, since the original post has finally reached the character limit, it's time to start a new list.
Beyond Evolution. its yet another one of many non-round browser based games. Its very new and they are still working on it & I've only recently started playing it so to be honest I don't know how good it will be but the reason I'm posting it is its been fairly fun so far and its claim is that you are a time-traveling caveman...and well that's just friggin cool. Submitted by lekapitan. Wurm. Not quite sure where you'd put it, I guess MMO. It's Java based, I believe, and in many ways similar to but superior to Runescape. One noteworthy thing is that it's fairly realistic, trees and minerals and such don't just magically respawn. Also, not all items/raw materials are created equal in this thing. Pretty much all items have a quality stat. Submitted by catlover20410 Grid Wars 2, by Mark Incitti. You click on "Grid Wars 2" to download And who could forget Lode Runner Online: Mad Monks' Revenge? In today's money, that game cost $70.27. Submitted by wasoe. Minions Of Mirth. It is an MMO for Mac and Windows there is a premium version for $30 but there is also a free version of it. Submitted by Vault Of Thrones. Urban Dead. It's a really fun MMO where you play as a zombie/survivor in a big old town. It's text based. Submitted by Mr Bookworm. Bunny Must Die. This game is a lot like a Metroid or a Castlevanina game. It is extremely fun, but all of the important text is in Japanese. You need to install the East Asian Language Files in the Control Panel section marked Regional and language options, if you haven't already. Submitted by Roadkill. I Wanna Be The Guy. Do you like 8-bit? Do you like old skoool Nintendo games? Do you like getting your backside handed to you over, and over, and over again? Think the game you're playing is hard? This is the game that kicked your dog and stole your bike in the 4th grade. This game invited you over for dinner, and served up a big ol' helping of your family. This game is Satan-spawned.** And it's also really fun and addicting, too. Submitted by neyo the king. Barkley's Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. If you're not playing Barkley's Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, you're doing yourself a disservice. It's one of the most hilarious games I've ever played. The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041, a day so painful to some that it is referred to only as the "B-Ballnacht". Thousands upon thousands of the world's greatest ballers were massacred in a swath of violence and sports bigotry as the game was outlawed worldwide. The reason: the Chaos Dunk, a jam so powerful its mere existence threatens the balance of chaos and order. Among the few ballers and fans that survived the basketball genocide was Charles Barkley, the man capable of performing the "Verboten Jam"... Flash forward 12 years to the post-cyberpocalyptic ruins of Neo New York, 2053. A Chaos Dunk rocks the island of Manhattan, killing 15 million. When the finger is put on the aging Charles Barkley, he must evade the capture of the B-Ball Removal Department, led by former friend and baller Michael Jordan, and disappear into the dangerous underground of the post-cyberpocalypse to clear his name and find out the mysterious truth behind the Chaos Dunk. Joined by allies along the way, including his son Hoopz, Barkley must face the dangers of a life he thought he gave up a long time ago and discover the secrets behind the terrorist organization B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S. Submitted by Novasol. Bots. Simple MMO. You choose from one of three 'bot' machines to control. Then go through little missions for gigas(form of currency) and xp to level up. One cool thing about it is that being higher level doesn't make you stronger, only allows you to wield stronger parts and gear for you bot. I have beaten others who are 10+ lvls above me in pvp. Drawbacks are the chat system and the special items. The chat in both the lobby and during missions is limited to so many characters. And getting anything past the regular upgrade items costs real money. You can get items with bonuses on them(ranging from +1 to +5) which are gotten after a boss is defeated, but they only drop rarely, and if you are playing in a big group then it's a mad rush for the box. Submitted by Eldazar. http://www.schtserv.com. Free server for PSO, PSO:BB and PSO 3. Yes its legal. Sega gave them permission to do so and they possibly pay sega in order to make it free for us. (and sega can't make money off of it anyways no more they moved on to psu) If you disagree I'll delete link and also form my sig. Submitted by ZurikSimer. (If not legal I'll just take it off of the list. I believe it is though). Dwarf Fortress: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/. Generate a world, make some dwarves, and build your fortress! Also has an Adventure mode, where you can wonder your world, taking quests from the other civilizations. Has a REALLY steep learning curve, so take a look at the wiki (http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page) for tips. Submitted by nubecybot. A Path Beyond. Free, Legal, Stand-Alone mod for Command and Conquer: Renegade by Bluehell Productions. Basically, it's a first person shooter that uses CnC: Red Alert units, vehicles, and buildings. System requirements are low enough that you don't need an awesome computer to play, but it also scales pretty nicely for those of us who do. For those of you who have concerns about the playability of the game, fret not. It's very well made overall. Only major complaint is that server size is limited to 26 players at a time, which can make it a little difficult to get in at certain times of day. (though, perhaps, they might be convinced to expand the size) Screenshots can be found here. Submitted by Loyal2Nes Cortex Command. It's basically Worms in realtime, with resource management and a build screen and base construction and AWESOME. It's also near-infinitely moddable. Only problem: The full version costs 20 bucks Canadian. Demo is free though, and very accessible. Submitted by Kerensky287. Battleships Forever. Submitted by Dauntasa. ADOM. Extensive Rogue-like. Think Nethack on steroids. Has Mac betas, Linux, Windows, and DOS versions available. Submitted by McTahr. Star Control 2. One of my favorite "old" PC games Star Control 2 went open source and is now being made into a superior version. Dont be afraid of the Beta tag, its a soldi release with very few bugs. They just never got around to adding in the extras they wanted to. They still managed to merge the voice and animation from the 3DO version, however. I suggest trying it, its quite fun. Submitted by Cid Highwind. Combat Arms Saw this one on the back of PC Gamer and decided to check it out. It's actually a really good FPS, the graphics are great for a free game, and the community isn't all 10 year olds. Submitted by Rokrin. Samurai of Legend. It's a decent game and similar in the way that Kingdom of Loathing plays. It allows you to get married, get a job, buy a house, adventure, kill things. I find it fun. Submitted by Ironymaster. Gang Garrison. It's basically a 2D version of Team Fortress 2. It's a really fun online game and I'm really blown away at how things are implemented for just a 2D online shooter. I'd personally recommend downloading the latest version as (despite what it says) I have the least amount of server issues and you can do a whole lot more. It's still under development though (Engineers are unable to make Sentry guns right now if I remember correctly), but loads of fun. Submitted by Savage Thinking. Shopping Cart Hero. A fun little flash game. Submitted by Mac. Original Zork Text adventure. Submitted by TheSparrow. Moria (warning: this game is no longer maintained) or Angband or any of its Variants These games are available for windows(except for moria), Linux or Mac. Rougelikes. Submitted by TheSparrow. CardMaster Conflict. It's a free and fun CCG, with creations from the mind of Mark Shallow (creator of ADVENTURERS!, Antihero for Hire and more), featuring cameos of various other webcomic artists and in-depth player involvement. I've played over six thousand matches, personally, so I thought I'd give it a proper shout-out here. Submitted by Whomper. Magic Duel. This game promotes a non-spoiler attitude. Meaning, no player is allowed to tell you how to solve a quest, defeat an NPC, what this monster's stats are, etc... You develop your own strategy and find things out for yourself. It also greatly promotes role-play. Hints are ok in some cases. SOME. Players actually CREATE some of the quests and can GIVE A REWARD. If you have been part of the game for some time, you begin to have a say in how it expands. There is one player that is about to have his home/smithy actually integrated into the game. The house is already there, just needs an interior coded and drawn. Submitted by Eldezar. The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. Free open-world RPG, and the birth of the much love Elder Scrolls series. Submitted by Corel. Battlefield Heroes. A fun little TF2-esque third person shooter. You get experience and level up and earn money you can use to buy new weapons, and you level up abilities as you gain experience as well. Two factions (Allies and Nazis, although they don't go so far as to SAY that), and you can either be a spy-like thing, a heavy weapons guy, or a standard infantrymen. Has vehicles. Submitted by Rokrin. Mabinogi. Free MMO. There's free games with better graphics, but this by far has the most dynamic gameplay. The amount of skills and things you can do are amazing.. You can even compose your own music, sit on a street corner, and get donations for entertaining people. Submitted by BattyAsHell. Atlantica Online. This is unique, for being a turn based MMO. Think Final Fantasy Tactics, with a timer. You can eventually accumulate up to 8 mercs, and in PvP you join other groups for big 100 on 100 battles.. It can get a bit nuts. The best thing about this game, is the cash shop is totally optional.. You can experience all the content, without ever spending a dime. Submitted by BattyAsHell. Survival Crisis Z. Sandbox style isometric survival horror. Submitted by BattyAsHell. Iji. Free platformer with RPG elements, different endings and different playstyles. Submitted by BattyAsHell. Knytt Stories. The sequel to Knytt, with a heavy focus on community-created map packs, as well as official ones. Submitted by Batty As Hell. osu!. Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents clone with step editor for creating your own "levels". Submitted by WillyFourEyes. Quake Live. Quake III Arena in a browser with fullscreen and widescreen support. Submitted by BattyAsHell. S4 League. S4 is a third person shooter with team deathmatch, a "football" type game, and an interesting mode called "Chaser" where one person is chosen randomly to be an overpowered boss type who's supposed to hunt down and kill all the normal players. Very stylish, and very easy to get into. Submitted by BattyAsHell. Knightfal. Seil killed Satan in a Bejeweled spinoff. Can you? Guess who submitted this one! Pixel Force: Left 4 DeadYou ever think, "I love Left 4 Dead, but it would be more awesome if it would be ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System!" Well, wonder no more, you can now download an 8-Bit styled Left 4 Dead game now, for free, over at Eric Ruth Games! Submitted by Lost in Time. Sushi cat Feed that fuckin' cat for points! Submitted by Jagos. Dink Smallwood is an old style RPG over a decade old but still pretty fun. It's compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac. It's high points are its "bizarre" humor, classic feel and utter shitload of player-made add-ons (or D-mods) for you to try. Submitted by Aldurin. Spelunky. An addictive platformer game where you, the Indiana Jones expy, explore a cave for fun and profit while trying to avoid the many, many things that can (and will) kill you. Submitted by Loyal. |

Man, YDKJ kinda sucks now that they changed the voice actors. That was just about the best game ever when it was out way back in... whenever.
EDIT: Does anyone know of a freeware game with gameplay like fire emblem? Cuz that would be kickass |
russian: Try Battle for Wesnoth. It's a hex-based grid, but otherwise is the same type of turn-based strategy RPG. Plus, there's a shitload of campaigns to download (through a handy in-program interface), and new ones being made frequently.
|
Y'know, I don't believe I've officially plugged this yet, so... here goes.
A Path Beyond. Free, Legal, Stand-Alone mod for Command and Conquer: Renegade by Bluehell Productions. Basically, it's a first person shooter that uses CnC: Red Alert units, vehicles, and buildings. Battleships forever. It's a real-time strategy game where you control fleets of big-ass spaceships and blow shit up. It's awesome.
