Let's Play: Earthbound

I started playing Earthbound.
Suddenly I got the idea to document my playthrough. So here it is. Let me know what you think. This is the first time i'm doing anything like this.
So If you think it sucks, just tell me, I'll stop bothering you and just enjoy the game.
Even though I do enjoy making this. So maybe I'll continue it and just don't publish it until you piss me off.

I decided to do it in good old fashioned image + text form and to host it on my abandoned Wordpress account, mostly because it makes things look organized. At leat more organized than just posting it in a Forum.

Chapter 0 - Pre-Prologue
Namin' shit.
You can skip that if you don't want to see me naming some characters and other things.

Chapter 1 - Prologue
I am the rad kid that flaps the night.

Is Chapter 1 too long? Is it about right? Too many pictures? Does the writing suffer too much from me not being a native English speaker? Whatever?
Tell me please.

EDIT: Please don't spoil the game for me, this is my first time playing it. Thanks.

Chapter 2 - Have You Passed Through This Night?
This is where the game starts for really real and I can walk around in town. And do y'know, the RPG kind of things.

Chapter 3 - Somebody Stole My Guitar
I pretty much just talk with some people to find out where the a girl named Pyle is. I beat one guy up.

Chapter 4 - Sky Painted On Car
I go to Happy Happy Village and smash some crazy cult of blue-worshipers.

Chapter 5 - The Longest Time
I do what I believe to be two sidequests completely unrelated to the main storyline and advance in the main storyline

Chapter 6 - Who Wants To Live Forever?
I am finally in Threed and ready to stop the zombie plague.

Chapter 7 - The Land Of Ice And Snow
Joker is finally on his way to Threed to stop the zombie plague.

Chapter 8 - Dead Bury Their Dead
Finally united, on our way out to stop the zombie plague.

Chapter 9 - Heroes Of The Lost Valley
The zombie plague is stopped. What now?

Chapter 10 - Beneath Eternal Oceans Of Sand
Okay, I go through a desert to reach a town to go back to that desert to go back to that town.

Chapter 11 - When The Lights Are Down
After coming back to town, which, despite the description, did not happen in the previous chapter, I do some thing with the Runaway Five and then another thing with the Department Store.

Chapter 12 - Fly Me To The Moon
Rad killing unicorns.

Chapter 13 - Snake vs. Monkey
Massive fetch-questing for a bunch of monkeys in the first half and a few too many Metal Gear references in the second.

Chapter 14 - Wherever I May Roam
Wandering around, basically. I travel from Fourside to Threed and from Threed to Winters and from Winters to Summers and well...

Chapter 15 - My Last Sunrise
I dive into nothingness.

Chapter 16 - Puff, the Magic Dragon
Off to Scaraba! Wait, let's check out that completely unrelated thing first.

Chapter 17 - Third Eye Surfer
Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right A B

Chapter 18 - Paint It Black
I'm really sorry for making a Rolling Stones reference which doesn't fit at all here, since I actually remove blackness, but it's not like there's any song called Yellow Submarine by maybe.. dunno... The Beatles? That would've just been the perfect mandatory music reference for this one.

Chapter 19 - Forever Of The Stars
Visiting a secret underground alien robot base to get owned.

Chapter 20 - Coming Home
We help the Tenda to become less shy and see dinosaurs a while later.

Chapter 21 - My Dream's But a Drop of Fuel for a Nightmare
Viqer's crazy dream world.

Chapter 22 - Child in Time
Nothing much happens, except our heroes are on their way to confront Giygas.

Final Chapter - A Giant Alien Force More Violent and Sick Than Anything You Can Imagine
The most evil final boss ever makes me PRAY!

Yeah, I've never played it either. It looks like you're doing fine so far, I'd ask that you continue. :)

EVILNess 12-19-2009 12:33 AM

Just make sure you talk to everyone, knock on every door, and inspect every interesting looking object. All the NPCs have something interesting to say, even if it's not plot-interesting.

Also, you should keep a running total of the Beatles references you find.

Yeah, I noticed that. It's one of the first things I noticed. The NPCs of Earthbound are probably my favorite NPCs ever.

I used up my remaining Pictures to make a new Episode.
It should have been two but I lost some pictures because zsnes can only save up to 999 Images, everything that's exceeding that number will be saved over the original 999. I really should've deleted my old pictures before that. Or used some screen capping tool that supports gamepads. (In case anyone knows some tool that allows me to map one button of my gamepad to make snapshots)

Oh well, I made it one longer chapter now. I'd like to be able to break up one post over several pages, but that doesn't seem to be possible.

Chapter 2 - Have You Passed Through This Night?

A Zarkin' Frood 12-21-2009 04:33 PM

Chapter 3 - Somebody Stole My Guitar is up.
It's shorter compared to the previous episode,
I already have the pictures for the next one, I only have to assemble it.

Sir Pinkleton 12-21-2009 06:56 PM

And still interesting.

How did you get a mushroom on your head?

Jagos 12-21-2009 08:17 PM

It's one of the attacks of the mushrooms in the area. It messes up your controls. Good thing is you can sell them for a decent profit.

Also Bad news and good news:

Good news - Slingshot is more powerful than what you have now

Bad news - The Slingshots never get SMAAAAASH attacks. Just a heads up in the future.

A Zarkin' Frood 12-22-2009 11:35 AM

I'm glad some people like it.
Here's
Chapter 4 - Sky Painted On Car

Is there anything I should do before going to Threed?

I did get another bat in the meantime, but that's definitely good to know. I was wondering why I didn't do any SMAAAAASH!!! attacks anymore.
Thanks for the info.

Sir Pinkleton 12-22-2009 12:00 PM

Anti-blue place sounds interesting. I think you should check that out before going to Threed.

CelesJessa 12-22-2009 03:35 PM

I vote the anti-blue place too!

Also this is pretty good so far! I just caught up on all of the chapters. Makes me want to play Earthbound again.

krogothwolf 12-22-2009 03:38 PM

Anti-Blue place vote as well!

Looks pretty good so far Insane!

Unless I'm mistaken slingshots have crummy accuracy too compared to all other weapons, with the exception of the Casey bat. Jeff's also superaccurate with his guns.

I don't think it was the accuracy. The Slingshots and Yo-Yos just don't have the attack power of the regular weapons of the heroes. They can be used by everyone, however (besides our martial arts master). Then again, I may be wrong, since I haven't played in a while...

I'll be back...

EVILNess 12-22-2009 09:16 PM

Slingshots and Yo-yos in fact do have a higher chance to miss than the bats, pans, and guns. Poo can indeed equip them although it lowers his attack power. The miss rate for Ness' bats is 1/16 while the slingshots and yoyos are 3/16, and they can't do SMAAAAASSSHHH!!!! Attacks.

A Zarkin' Frood 12-24-2009 08:31 AM

I went to the anti-blue place in Chapter 5 - The Longest Time.
I expected something less relevant to the plot.

A Zarkin' Frood 12-27-2009 08:44 AM

Chapter 6 - Who Wants To Live Forever?
I get captured by zombies during a cutscene...

Sir Pinkleton 12-27-2009 08:04 PM

Neat! I wonder what will happen next.

Also, I of course demand to know what's up with that teddy bear. :p

Jagos 12-27-2009 10:34 PM

Teddy Bears will save your life. Well, as long as you keep them in your hearts.

Teddy bears soak up damage, the regular bears about 100 the DX about 500, for those who are holding them. The devs were kinda enough to give you one for Paula cause she starts at level one. Incidentally, she also levels the slowest of all the characters.

My AVG also went nuts on that link and blocked the whole site, I wouldn't click on it.

A Zarkin' Frood 12-28-2009 12:47 PM

I had some time during the holidays when there wasn't much to do.
This is the rest of my long session of 26th December.

What now?

In case I forgot anything in Threed, just tell me. I'll just walk back, I guess.

As long as you are talking to everyone you see then you are doing fine. There is some random stuff in the desert that is easily missed though...
None of it is important, but man it's funny and weird.

Also, BOING! ZOOOM!

EDIT: Damnit its not the same, I formally request a Mr. Saturn font.

A Zarkin' Frood 12-29-2009 06:21 PM

Chapter 10 - Beneath Eternal Oceans Of Sand
The trip through the desert was uneventful but interesting.

Wandering around, basically. I travel from Fourside to Threed and from Threed to Winters and from Winters to Summers and well...

EVILNess 01-02-2010 10:42 AM

So how freaked out were you when the game called you for your name? I know I didn't pay it much thought at the time...

A Zarkin' Frood 01-02-2010 12:02 PM

I wasn't freaked out about the fact that the game wanted to know my name. But I don't know what to make of the time it chose to do that.
Maybe I'm reading too much into that.

Chapter 15 - My Last Sunrise
I dive into nothingness.

A Zarkin' Frood 01-04-2010 10:19 AM

Chapter 16 - Puff, the Magic Dragon
Off to Scaraba! Wait, let's check out that completely unrelated thing first.

Meister 01-04-2010 11:51 AM

How you didn't go straight for a One joke here is beyond me.

Really enjoying this by the way - I can't seem to find the time to replay Earthbound so this comes in very handy. Keep it up!

EVILNess 01-04-2010 03:44 PM

Don't forget to use the carrot key from the chest after T.P.R.o.D.

It's a very important item. If you can't figure out where it goes remember back to where you have been before and try to connect the carrot to something you've seen before.

Many first time players run around missing this place wondering where it is.

EDIT: Also, the bosses are gonna yoyo in difficulty from now on. I saw you had a bit of trouble with the Kraken, the next Sanc boss has twice his HP, but if you bring the Franklin Badge it makes him easier.

Also, have you been having Jeff make his utility Items? The Broken Trumpet makes the Defense Shower, the Broken Bazooka nakes the Heavy Bazooka (VERY useful!!), the Broken Iron makes the Slime Generator, and the Broken Pipe makes the Shield Killer to name a few of his most useful. Not to mention his most powerful guns are made from inn stays.

A Zarkin' Frood 01-04-2010 04:22 PM

Don't worry. I believe I even mentioned picking up the key.
And yeah, I have Jeff/Joker make the items, though he seems to be a bit lazy as of late, despite carrying a lot of broken stuff. Like the bazooka I'm so curious about now.

Chapter 17 - Third Eye Surfer
In this chapter I use the carrot key... and more.

I originally planned on making this the title of that chapter.
But then I realized two chapter titles referencing Metallica in a row would be a bit too much.
That said, there may be some One somewhere... like, if you transcend into nothingness. Maybe with your mouse.

If that's what you meant by a One joke, that is.

EVILNess 01-04-2010 04:43 PM

(I realize you got the game covered, but I like what your doing and am trying to help without spoilers via generic tips. I've played this game a lot and have gone out of my way to see everything.)

Did you get the Bracer of Kings from Pink Cloud? I don't know if you are using any kind of guide other than the hint-man and it's gonna be really rough on Poo (Lol) in the last few areas if you don't gather his armor.

Also, the psychedelic cake lady sells Magic Tarts which restore 20 PP. These are useful for a while, but there is a temporary shop that sells Magic Pudding. These restore 40 pp, but you have to stock up on the before you leave that area. You can also get a piggy nose and dig for Magic Truffles which restore 80 pp. All these items are damn useful to have a few of at the end of the game.

You can get Poo's only weapon from a super rare drop from a specific type of Starman enemy, you'll know him when you see him because he is Gold. Be careful, he disappears when you finish the area and you can never fight him again.

Said drop is really, really, really not worth it unless you're lucky.

I think I already got all the stuff you mentioned... at least the stuff I can get up to now.
But hints on things I shouldn't miss under any circumstances ever are always much appreciated. So thanks for that.

I don't use any guides by the way, but I do try to play the game as thoroughly as possible, because I'm really enjoying it.

Yeah, you the Sword of Kings isn't really required. It does make his Bash attack more powerful, but Poo uses mainly PSi anyway. I do try to get it every game though.

If you go for it, limit the time you look for it because you can easily spend 5 or more hours trying to get it drop.

Chapter 20 - Coming Home

Chapter 21 - My Dream's But a Drop of Fuel for a Nightmare
Viqer's crazy dream world.

A Zarkin' Frood 01-11-2010 03:08 PM

I finished the game last Saturday.
This, however is not the final chapter. I wanted to make the final boss fight detailed enough, because it's awesome. I will likely never do it justice.

Script is already written, but I'm too tired to get all the pictures in one folder to batch rename and convert them right now.

So here's the penultimate lame chapter.

Chapter 22 - Child in Time
Nothing much happens, except our heroes are on their way to confront Giygas.

PCD 01-11-2010 10:59 PM

Hahaha. Porky. What a silly thing to call him.

I've been told a lot about the ending of this game, and how totally epic it is, but I've never gotten to actually see the buildup to it and whatnot. I'm looking forward to seein' whatcha got!

CelesJessa 01-11-2010 11:05 PM

I can't believe you got to the end already! It seems like you just started!

The ending is indeed awesome.

I've enjoyed this LP. Good work!
